NCPA Student Chapters Making a Difference:

Members of the NCPA student chapter at the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy have been searching for the niche. The school has a large number of student organizations, many of which are already successfully providing screening and wellness services to the public. Due to this, we changed out chapter’s focus and goals to educating the public about proper medication disposal, a topic that had not been addressed in our area.

To educate the public, under the leadership of Julie Hull, President of the Chapter, and Leesa Shine and Jeremy Prunty, officers, we planned two events at Waterfront Family Pharmacy, a local independent pharmacy. For the events, we created a display board illustrating the disposal of medications and presented a display of a “properly disposed of” medication. Our chapter worked with our School’s Academy of Student Pharmacists chapter, who provided pamphlets and displays about the proper use and disposal of sharps. Each patient was provided with a “drug disposal packet” which consisted of a Ziploc bag of kitty litter with directions on how to discard their medication safety tips. Our first event was publicized with a brief article in the city’s newspaper and on a statewide PBS TV show entitled “Doctors on Call” by our chapter advisor, Dr. Art Jacknowitz.

We had an excellent response from the public at our first two events. Not a single patient or heath professional that we counseled knew how to properly discard their unwanted medications. Many patients asked for additional packets to give to family members or take to their workplaces or doctor’s offices. To date, we have distributed about 120 drug disposal packets at our NCPA events and health fairs. We also plan to target health care practitioners and students with a knowledge and attitude-based survey. Our chapter feels that by initiating our drug disposal program, we are keeping our patients safer, protecting the environment, and demonstrating that pharmacists are true medication experts.
