One of my friends was recently at Columbia (I got rejected w/o interview) for interview - the Director of the program told all interviewees that they accept about half of the ~90-100 applicants they interview. Seeing that the class size is about 12-15, the yield rate seems to be 25%-35%. Does this make sense?

Well if they accept around 50% and their yield rate is 25%, then (0.5)(100)(0.25) = 13.5 matriculants so that makes sense. However some schools have an easier time attracting accepted applicants to their schools. UW, for instance, has a 60% yield rate; last year they only accepted 17 people, of whom 10 matriculated.
