Hello,
I am active duty Army and I was wondering if anybody here applied for this year's EMDP2 ( Enlisted to Medical Degree Preparatory Program) matriculating class? And if yes, do you have any idea of when the results will come out? I've been checking USU's website and their FB page and still nothing. Good luck to everybody that applied, and I appreciate your responses!

Check out the military medicine forum. There is a running thread for EMDP2.

I'm active duty Air Force and applied to EMDP2 - Cohort 8. I haven't heard anything yet, but I figured that is because I'm waiting to find out if my medical waiver will be approved or not. The Commissioning Coordinator said that the process can take 4-6 weeks. Needless to say the anticipation is killing me. Best of luck to you!

Thank you for your reply. I've been checking the Army's Milper message every day for the board results and no updates yet. I hope that you make it and I hope that the results come out soon. Best of luck to you as well!!!

Hello Elietero,

Thank you for replying to this thread. Which branch are you, and how has this experience been for you so far? Do you have any idea when the results will be out for this year's class? My anxiety is on 1000 right now. I have sooo many questions!!!

1- Do you know how they select candidates for each branch? It seems like some branches have more seats than others. I've noticed a pattern of Air Force having more candidates accepted compared to the other branches.

2- Was it hard to find appartments in a reasonable price close to George Mason and did you report early so you could establish yourself in the area?

3- Did you get selected on your first application? If not, did you re-apply with the same packet and only improved what you needed to, or you had to request new letters of recommendation, and approval?

4- With covid- 19 are all classes still traditional or did they move to online?

5- Do they provide books and other studying materials or do you have to buy them? I actually wanted to start studying now (if I know the books name) so I can get used to science courses again.

I am hoping that the milper message will be out by the begining of April because I got PCS orders to move to a new duty station with a report date of 10 May 21. I'll have to start clearing my current base in April, but if I get selected it'll cancel those orders. I need these results to be out because I don't have enough time!!!! I'm trying to prevent PCsing in May because if I move before the results come out and I end up getting selected, that will be a total waste of time and money. I'm hopeful that the results will be out soon. The best of luck to all who applied this year!

Hi, its my pleasure to help. I am AF and the experience has been amazing. It is one of the toughest things I have ever done, but it has been very rewarding and also showed me what I am capable of. This year has been like no other, so it is not surprising they are taking their time releasing the results. Also, i believe that they are accepting candidates differently than other years. I think they made you go through DODMERBS right? We didn't have to do that until we applied to med school.

1- As far as I know, each branch has their own processes to selecting candidates, and then they release the applicant pool to USU for confirmation. The trend certainly is more AF than other branches, but hopefully the program keeps growing and it becomes more equitable.

2- there are a bunch of nice places around campus, so it all depends on where you want to live. Classes are in the Manassas campus (Science and Technology) of GMU. If you want to be close to campus, something around Manassas would be your best bet. If cost is an issue, the farther away West you go from D.C, the cheaper it is (haymarket, Bristow, Gainesville) but it would make a longer commute to USU (you don't have to go too often, but still you will go there sometimes). Also traffic is terrible in the DMV (Washington DC metro area). I chose to live somehwere closer to DC but not too far away to campus, so I live in Centreville. For BAH you will get 2544 a month (for E5) so you could budget around that price. I recommend using zillow to search and filter through some places and then get a realtor to work with you. I have the info of one so if you would like let me know and will send you his info.

3- I was lucky enough to get accepted first time. However, I thought about joining the program 2 years before, but I didn't because of my GPA and I got a masters to improve my chances. So basically, I got a masters to increase my overall GPA and to show them (and med schools) that i am for real about being a physician.

4- Covid sucks and it has made classes extremely hard to focus on. Cohort 7 did face-to-face labs (chem, physics, bio) and online lectures while Cohort 6 did straight online for everything. I know that GMU and USU are trying to bring people back for the summer and fall, so you will probably (hopefully) will get face-to-face classes. Online classes are convenient schedule wise, but they are a drag to sit through and look at a screen for hours (at least for me)

5- They do provide all books, even for the MCAT. There are some sites that you can download the textbooks from. I can get you some of the titles and you cans earch for them if you like. However, if you really wanted to get ahead of the curve, I would suggest start studying for the MCAT, especifically for the Psych/soc area. All classes in the program are geared towards the sciences (chem, physics, bio) but none for psych/soc. So if you want to buy psych/soc study books and read ahead you could. We used Kaplan (I don't know if you will too). Theres also a ton on resources online. but I can shows you in the right direction.

6- I had the same problem as you. I was supposed to PCS in February, but i extended until April. I lost that assignment, and they gave me a new one. So it was a lot of unknowns. I would try to extend at your current base if possible just so you could have some time to do all the admin stuff.

Let me know if you have more questions, or pm me so we could talk more about the textbooks and any other info you would like. Good luck

Elietero,

Thank you sooooo much for answering all of my questions into detail. I submitted a request to extend for 90 days. Hopefully it gets approved. And yes, I did my physical through DODMERB. It seems like this year they did a total change on the application style. Even though it was a long process, I thankful because it'll be like that for med school. I wish I did the same thing about my degree 2 years ago to raose my GPA, but my plans went completely south. Thank you for the advice on the MCAT. I definitely want to start studying ahead to make things easier. I am not a online class person at allll.
I will PM you so we can talk more about this. I am soooo excited you replied!!!! Again, thank you for your reaponse!!

You're welcome 🙂 I just wanted to let you know that I heard back from the EMDP2 staff. Unfortunately I was not selected, but hopefully I can reply for the next cohort. Best of luck to you & I hope you receive better news than me.

Hello @tapars3513,
Thank you for coming in here to update the thread. I also came to update it. I'm sorry you weren't selected this time. Don't be discouraged. Re-apply for next cohort and I'm sure that you'll get selected next time because you know exactly how the process goes. I am happy to say that I was selected! I'll make sure that this thread stays alive so people can communicate about the program. Feel free to contact me for whatever you may need.

Do you have any advice for those of us who are re-applicants? I don't know if I will get another chance because I had to apply for a TIS waiver. Hopefully EMDP2 will accept TIS waivers this next cycle as well. Is there anything I can do in the meantime to better my chances of acceptance?

Don't lose hope. Re-apply for next cycle. If your SAT/ ACT/ GRE scores are already high, focus on more shadowing experience and strong letters of recommendation.

I was actually selected for the 8th cohort as well and I wanted to say thank you for putting this information out there as it's very helpful. As you know there are a lot of unknowns at this time so I wanted to see if I could throw a couple more questions at you. For one, how far in advance do you report to USU before you actually start class, and during that time are you just going through the check-in process and doing admin stuff? Also, do you know if we will be getting a sponsor prior to checking in? Thanks!

Hi! congratulations on getting selected. I believe that you could report as soon as you would like (technically you could report now). I know people that reported more than 30 days before the start of the program and they were doing admin stuff for our CoC/urinalysis/shadowing. So it depends on you. If i would have known that, i would have tried to report earlier (before the program I was in korea so it was a little harder for me, but still could have pushed for an earlier report date to get some shadowing hours). Just dont report after the RNLTD.

You should be getting a sponsor from cohort 7 that will help with the transition, but feel free to DM me any questions you have. I could also give you my contact info and you could text/call me any time. Hope it helps

Edit: just to clarify, you could report as soon as you receive your orders. the only set date is the RNLTD, anything earlier than that is up to you, your command, and whoever gets your orders created.

Thank you so much for all of the information for application to Cohort 9!! Not enough words to express how grateful I am 🙂 Going to start working on my application ASAP! Do you know if the GRE will be accepted in lieu of the SAT or ACT for this cycle as well? Due to COVID, my test dates kept getting canceled for application last cycle.

My pleasure!!! As far as th GRE, according to the checklist it says that you need a waiver for it. I'll get more clarification on that and I'll let you know

I know the application cycle is 1 May 21 - 30 Sep 21, but the services haven't released their application guidelines yet. Do you have any insight or foresee the services releasing that information around the same time as the EMDP2 application cycle opens? The Air Force MyPers message still says military & academic eligibility criteria will be posted in Jun/Jul 21.

Even if they don’t, there doesn’t seem to be an advantage to applying early. Or at least there wasn’t when I applied. I sent my app in like a week before the due date and was selected.

But y’all are lucky. Back in my day, it was a paper app. And if you didn’t have everything printed out properly and in exactly the right order, it got thrown in the trash. AND I was ****ting my pants for 3 days praying it didn’t get lost in the mail.

HOT INFO FOR EMDP2 COHORT 9!!!!!

To be honest, I would follow all of the guidelines from the EMDP2 official website because you'll be turning in your application directly to them and not your service. Just so you have an idea, the candidates that were selected for cohort 8 have known that they got selected since March but the services still haven't released the official results yet. At least for the Army. Therefore, don't wait for the Airforce MyPers, go ahead and get your application started!!!

Ok, thank you so much for your help! I will definitely do that. Also, I attended the EMDP2 Application Tutorial today & it was very informative.
