I would love to know more about the pros and cons of each of these schools before deciding whether to interview.

DMU
Pros:
  • I'm already accepted so yay!
  • Great reputation for DO (I'm interested in primary care and DMU is good for that too!)
  • High board pass rates
  • residency rates are also good from what I've seen
  • Des Moines seems like a good city with a balance of rural/urban (like suburban?)
Cons:
  • Far (I would prefer to stay in TX)
  • expensive! (almost 84K total costs)

UIWSOM
Pros:
  • Honestly have not heard too much about this place but it's catholic oriented (I'm Christian)
  • close to home as it's TX
Cons:
  • Not great reputation I think?
  • lower board pass rates
  • still expensive- same tuition as DMU at $56K
  • would have to prepare for another interview.

Thank you!

I'm big on relationships so my review is based a lot on that. I attended a lot of the UIWSOM webinars this summer/fall. Between their webinars and interactive interview, I liked how UIWSOM focused on connection with applicants. I was not very impressed with DMU's interview process being so disconnected with such limited interaction with faculty.

I'd encourage you to still do the UIWSOM interview and read up on their curriculum, which is a lot of PBL and self-directed learning. See if that fits how you learn. This way you can make an educated decision. Their curriculum is not Catholic based. During their MMI interview, you have some time to ask questions and interact with staff and a current student.

If it matters to you, some other things to consider are clinical clerkships and distance traveled or the need to move. I believe UIWSOM keeps you in TX, but puts students all over the state. DMU has clerkship sites in multiple states (IL, MN, WI, IA and TX).

I'm not sure if you're a URM, but UIWSOM and DMU have very different levels of diversity and different makeups of their student bodies.

Should you end up with a decision to make, consider what type of environment you will be successful in. Wishing you all the success!

If there’s a chance you would be interested in attending UIWSOM you should attend the interview. Sometimes you’ll learn something about the school that sways your preferences.

When is your deposit due for DMU?

As a Texas resident who currently holds an acceptance to UIWSOM, I would 100% without question choose DMU over UIWSOM. However, they are both US medical schools that will ensure your future success in matching to residencies and becoming a physician so it is ultimately up to you to decide. Attend the UIW interview and see if you gain an appreciation for the program. Don't make a decision soley based on the advice of SDN users such as myself. I wish you the best of luck and future success throughout this application cycle. Congratulations on your acceptance future doc!!
