Aw, poor little Tabby. 😛
Oh, don't worry! The cat food is already taken care of. 🙂 This is a grocery budget for two humans.

Supposedly there is a store like Aldi somewhere around here. Thanks for the recommendation. I didn't even realize that there was a store like that around here, but my bf said that there is...

I'll definitely let y'all know how it goes. We plan on going tomorrow. :luck:

Do they make you deposit 25 cents to get a shopping cart, then give it back to you when you return the cart? It ain't an Aldi or quality imitator unless they do that. That's the most ingenious thing EVER in order to save labor costs. Those damned German....God they make good capitalists...

HAHAHAHAHAHA! Aldi is a German store. No wonder I recognized the deposit shopping carts and the short aisles. I used to have to bag my own groceries, too, or I would get a snobby stare if I needed a plastic bag.

I wish I could find the store that I used to shop at in Achern. After an hour of searching Google images, I get zilch.

This brings back lots of memories...

On this lady's website (#14), she has an entire podcast about Aldi shopping in Germany. Supposedly, the produce in German Aldis is much better than the produce in Wisconsin Aldis.

Your Mapquest link was a little off (or maybe I'm thinking of a store that's really similar to Aldi), but that's how Mapquest is sometimes.

It's right here on this map. You can see the area in the satellite or hybrid mode. If you zoom in, you would go down Eisenbahnstrasse until you reach the white building that's perpendicular with Kaiser-Wilhelm-Strasse.

This is soooo cool WVU. WOW! 😀

Way to hijack this thread, guys.

But yes, Aldi is incredible (we have them here in li'l Southwest MO). Definitely where I will be getting my groceries when (or, unfortunately, if) I start making bank.

The thread was not jacked. It was reinvented... Now the always-feeling-poor OP knows where to shop for groceries. 😉

Here you go WVU... Thanks for the recommendation. 🙂

So I went to Save-a-lot today. Upon first glance, it looks like a regular grocery store. However, after you walk into the store you run into a problem. Oh no! There are no shopping carts by the doors. Instead, there's a sign that says that you have to bring in a cart with you (although the 25¢ cart deposit is not required, WVU 🙁). No biggie. It's just a shopping cart. 😎 I'll do my share and round up a cart. 😛

After getting the shopping cart and walking back through the front door, I noticed that the aisles were full of groceries that were stacked in cardboard cases. Their appearance was different, but it wasn't distracting or unsightly.

Once I started shopping, I noticed the items that I wanted to buy and the ones that I would never buy. Some of the off-brand products were simply "off". However, almost all of the prices, of items that I was familiar with, were equivalent to other grocery stores' "sale" prices or even lower. For example, all of the 2 liter Coke products, VO5 shampoos, and Ramen noodle six packs were 99¢.

While shopping, I noticed that a little girl was carry a box. That's right. I remember... I need one of those boxes, too. So, whenever I needed a box, I just grabbed one off the shelf while shopping. A couple of times, I had to reorganize the products on the shelf to pull out an empty, but all too necessary, box. Aren't they suppose to pay me for that? 😉

Here's the list from today's shopping experience:
applesauce, six pack of Ramen noodles, frozen mixed vegetables with broccoli, two packs of make-your-own pizza crust and sauce, orange creamsicle bars, ice cream sandwiches, glasier bars (What would you do for a Glasier Bar?), two loaves of wheat bread, fresh mushrooms, a large can of Serrano peppers, a box of frozen pretzels, frozen strawberries, a frozen pizza, frozen tater puffs (sort of like tater tots), nacho chips, V8 Splash, Gogurt, and two packages of Mallo Cups 😍.

The total price was $37.14, which includes the 3.5% food tax. I'm still really impressed.

To top it all off, whenever I brought the groceries inside, the cardboard boxes were much easier to carry than plastic bags, and they double as cat toys. Cats love to play in boxes...

Only $37.14 for all that, plus bonus boxes? Not bad! Tabby must be excited about the spillover benefit of your shopping at Save-a-lot. 😀 Hope she enjoys the boxes! 🙂

I think she'll really enjoy them. She's so easy to please. 🙂

On a side note, I bet stores like these could benefit from a generics-only pharmacy.

The best boxes to grab are the ones the produce come in. Especially the Dole Banana boxes. They are reinforced and come with handles. You can put, like, 30 lbs of crap in them. It is acceptable to fight people over them. I've done it before. As soon as I walk in the store, I head back to the produce section and try to swipe one. The Romaine lettuce boxes make good backups if no Dole boxes are available.

Aldi already has that. They have a little section with the most popular generics. (I.E. Bismuth, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, ranitidine, ect.) The one in Morgantown sells beer and wine, too. Sometimes you'll see the town hobos out there at 7AM waiting for the place to open.

this made me laugh SO HARD. I can picture you fighting some old lady for a box and then right in the middle her being like "young man, aren't you my druggist?" (I hate when old people say "druggist" or "pharmist".)

then again, today was a long day and I got in an argument with some little old lady. she had a $7 copay and a coupon for a $30 gift card, so she said I "owed" her $23 CASH. umm, nope.

wow, the thread starter must be wanting to buy a 500k+ home and drive a bentley or something. sheesh. learn to save, don't spend all your money, and eventually you will have lavish things...it just takes time.

right when i graduate, i'm assuming i'm going to be making anywhere b/w 80-100K before taxes. whatever i end up making, i'm most likely going to save at least a 1/3 of it, and live off of ~30K a year so i can buy a nice home and save for planning a family in the future.

once you establish yourself and save $ to own a home, car, etc...then you can do whatever the hell u want with that $.

Yeah, this post is ridiculous...until I quit my job in 2 weeks to start school, my wife and I have been living very comfortably on about 75K combined. Granted it is in the suburbs of Buffalo where cost of living is pretty cheap (even though our taxes are pretty high, other things are very reasonable especially the cost of housing), but we are easily able to afford a decent house a few vehicles and support a daughter. Of course, people have very different thoughts of how much money is required to make them happy...we certainly can't go out to expensive dinners and take lavish trips all the time, but I don't need that kind of thing.

And yes, Aldis rocks! Some of their stuff is pretty crappy, but basic stuff like milk, cereal, canned stuff, bread, cheese and some of their meat is OK. We shaved our grocery bill in half compared to shopping at Tops.

Tops sucks. Wegmans is where it is at for all your grocery shopping needs

Yeah I'm starting to realize that! I've lived just a few minutes from a Tops in Hamburg for years, so I'm just lazy and go there even though Wegmans in only 10 minutes away! Wegmans really does have a crazy variety of food...just makes Tops seem so dull.

I saw those while I was in France, they were cool
(dollar euro coin instead of the quarter if you were curious lol)

everyone feel bad for me i just took out my latest student loan for 38k

But what about the grandma as your advisor

I don't trust anyone over 50. They'd tell me to invest in GM, US Steel, or something equally as ridiculous. F' that. I'm investing in India and China.....dabbling a little in Russia...the Ruble is starting to take off as one of the world's most stable currencies. She probably still thinks the Russians and Chinese are communists or something. Hell, the Chinese have out fasco-capitalismed the US for Christ's sake.
