Official Dermatology Interview Invites 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have January 7th.
Anyone want to trade for the 14th or 21st?
thanks

Did anyone ever hear from SUNY Downstate after November 15th when applications were due via snail mail. I never saw another message or posting, and figured a decent number of people would get interviews given that they have several spots

Have people heard from VCU? Its not on the list and I was holding out hope for an interview there.... How about Maryland, anyone hear from them either?

Hello from the Dermboard. We had a ton of technical issues this year and, as you know, we are ex-residents who volunteer our time and money to the board. But we're no computer whizzes! The links are back up and running and, if there is interest, we will post all interviews, as we've done in previous years - we have the information and it is almost complete. Additionally, we will post the matchlist in March, as we've done every year since 2001.

Regarding the question above: Downstate has sent out all invites.
A suggestion: you can always very politely and strategically place one phone call to the department. If you'd like more details on exactly what to do if you didn't get the interview but would like one, you can email [email protected]
Also, we will post some tactics for the interviews shortly. This section is also updated in the dermguide for 2009.

Best wishes,
Dermboard

welcome back dermboard! and thanks for taking the time to get it back up and running!

I have January 16th for Mayo Rochester interview - would anyone like to trade for January 5th. I would be willing to discuss any penalties which may be incurred by having to cancel tickets and make new ones.

Regarding "dermboard"'s comment above in an effort to jumpstart its Dermboard:

I'm a current derm resident and have to say I'm going to stick with SDN going forward. The Dermboard folks (whoever the one or two people they are---they certainly DON'T represent a whole lot of residents) may not be "computer whizzes" as they say, but keeping the site updated just by even creating a Season 2008-2009 on time is hardly difficult, given they've done it before. I have to say I believe another poster's comment that likely the Dermboard founders were concerned about the significant dip in ad revenue and sales of their (pathetic) Dermguide and therefore scurried to restart it again after letting it drop. (I was suckered by fear into buying the Dermguide for $5 before they hiked the price to $8 and basically realized that I bought a whole lotta nuthin'.) Dermboard's also generally a poor site, with crappy search functions and disorganized forums. Sucks compared to what I see on SDN.

I'll assert this: Just because they are Dermboard "founders" doesn't mean they have a lock on derm interview info or experience *at all*. They are one or two or three residents with their own individual experiences. We've all been through the process and matched. I'd be happy to share my thoughts and insights - through my good and bad experiences - through posts via SDN, with no personal profit.

And no, I don't work for SDN (which is a non-profit BTW). I just joined today because I figure interview season is well underway, and I could lend a hand. Several current residents I've talked to already know that people have flocked to SDN--just had dinner with some the other day, and we were talking about how Dermboard is dead and folks are all posting here.

Because of copyright I can't post the Dermboard Dermguide, but I certainly can share what I read there and did *not* learn through the little (pathetic) essay it consists of. I certainly did not learn anything new or useful.

Again, I'm going to be collating match info here on SDN and posting in an Excel attachment to this site. PM me with your info.

About me: I applied to about a third of the total number of residency programs out there, got about a third of applied programs to interview me, interviewed at all but two, and ranked all that I interviewed at. I interviewed at a mix of places: "top" programs, midprograms, and "lower" programs, all over the country except for the South. I didn't match at my number one (a program which isn't considered "number one" but was geographically my favorite), and matched lower on my list. So I was in shock, only because I realized how narrowly I avoided NOT matching.

Now, despite some stress during the program and adjustment issues, I'm very happy where I'm at! I see a large variety of ethnicities and work with a wide variety of attendings. I can actually truly say I love my program, even though it's not perfect. My colleagues and my PD, if they knew I was saying this, probably would be in shock, because everyone thinks I'm crabby.

I'd be more than happy to comment on people's individual situations about strategy and stuff, but I'd rather do it in public forum than through PM--I don't want to be swamped with PMs. I only want to take PMs when it comes time to collating the match list.

Anyway, good luck. Stay calm during your interviews. I screwed up my interviews at places I really wanted to match at, but did really well at places that I wasn't all necessarily hung up about. Why? Nerves.

Thank you so much for all your help.

Would you mind telling us exactly how you screwed up your interviews at your favorite places? Did you behave awkwardly? Or did you feel like you did not answer the questions as well as you would have hoped to? We could learn a lot from those "mistakes."

Thanks so much!

iluvskin, I was just going to ask that question.

DermMatch, thank you for your advice. Seems like I read that many people do not match at their #1. I am glad that you're happy and doing well despite this.

Foot in mouth syndrome. Or just landing in a situation where the conversation does not click. Why? Poor vibes from the start of the interview, compounded by the fact I was nervous and didn't know how to chill out. Hearkening back to those very uncomfortable moments just sends chills down my spine. Ugh!

baylor and usc have not sent rejections. either reject me or invite me already! what a tease!

i'm waiting for interviews to pour in this week. :luck:

Does anyone know about offers from Loma Linda, Maryland, or St. Lukes?

loma linda offered last month. They required some kind of oral presentation that was due via powerpoint by jan 5th or something. I personally couldn't make because it conflicted directly with something else (and i am afraid of public speaking anyway so it worked out).

still waiting for those invites to pour in...

jk
