If you could have your pick of any vet-related job (or not!) once you graduate, what would that be?

I'm changing my mind every day, but I think it would be pretty awesome to work at Best Friends in Utah :)

I'd be paid close to a 6 figure income to travel around the world working with rural populations on initiatives to improve stock and human health, including special projects like livestock protection from big cats, elephant health in working camps, and caring for temple populations of a variety of species.

Something where I'd get to combine emergency/critical care with shelter med and high-volume s/n. A big city is also a big QOL requirement for me. I'd love to work at Best Friends, but I'd lose my mind if I spent any length of time in Kanab.

I'd be happy if I was making a lot of money so that it'd only take me a few years to pay off all my loans and debt and then all my patients were good, never bite and the clients were even better. :)

I love the enviroment and the pace of a small animal clinic, but there are lots of other vet-related jobs out there that I haven't experienced yet, so I could easily change my mind.

Non-vet jobs? I have no idea what else I want to do. I'm not sure if earning a masters will get me a job that I'm happy with. If I don't get into vet school on my first try, I'm going to explore my options. Nursing is starting to sound appealing, but going back to earn my BScN after earning my BSc just seems like I'm taking a step back. I also love being outdoors, so maybe a job in conservation or field biology might be right for me!

Ideal job would be as a goat specialist vet ... I just love goats. And there aren't enough good goat vets around. Or maybe a production ruminant obstetrician (sp?)/reproduction specialist. But Thats unlikely due to low demand - here anyway. Realistically after I graduate (assuming I get in of course) i'd like to spend a year or so as a locum in either the uk or us, then come back home to work in a mixed rural practice. I would also be interested in working on exotic and emergency diseases of production animals.

Being a vet at Animal Kingdom in Walt Disney World is my dream job. Exotic/zoo animals, get into Disney World for free.... +2 :D

And while doing that, I also want to do wildlife rehabilitation on the side.

i think i would LOVE to do one of the following:

be a staff veterinarian at a non-profit service dog organization (i.e. guide dogs for the blind, where I got a lot of my pre-vet experience)
or
a repro specialist for canine and equine patients. I'm kind of hoping to fall in love with food animals (but I have no experience in them) - cuz I'd love to use my interest in repro to also work with food animals (I'm paranoid about my food - so I think it'd be great to be part of knowing where it came from)

we'll see, tho - so far, nothing turns me off about vet med, so I keep falling in love with everything!

Pearl ... If you want to fall in love with food animals, meet some goats, or cattle, or lambs <3 they sure stole my heart. Love em.

I originally wanted to either be a lameness specialist or a repro specialist in equine, but since I started undergrad, I've fallen in love with bovine as well. Also, after a lengthy weekend conference, I have also taken to neuro in horses as well :)

i would love love LOVE to be doing video editing/producing or photographer!!

Cats and horses! Haha, just kidding. Ideally, I think I would like to be one of those rural mixed animal vets that is your go-to person when you need them. Something like my vet at home, who combines farm calls with a small animal hospital.

Also, I enjoy physical therapy and orthopedics, so hopefully I'd be able to work that in as well somehow.

Mixed animal emergency practice. You never know what's going to walk in the door.

Ahh, see, this is my favorite thing about veterinary medicine. So many things you could possibly do, along with the opportunity to change your mind halfway through your career and go in another direction! It's the perfect profession.

For example, my vet is mostly a large animal/equine vet, but he also is very proficient in small animal. As he's gotten older he's gotten a little tired of pounding out herd checks and teeth floatings all day, so he has cut back on that and now his major thing is as a veterinary real estate agent. He goes around the country appraising practices and their equipment and selling them. He also has his own line of supplements for various species, and is also researching his own dairy cow feed to increase the efficiency of dairy farms. You can literally do ANYTHING.

I've always had my entire life planned out. Since I was in elementary school, my plan was to take all the hardest classes in high school, do well, get into a good college, and go to vet school. Well most of that is done, and once I get into vet school, I'll have reached the end of my planning-I've never really thought of my life beyond vet school. And that is SO exciting! I really really love all things equine, but I also enjoy working with dogs and cats, and I have a special love for food animals. I could totally see myself working in a clinic, out of the back of a truck, or both. If I really, really think about it, probably my dream job would be to work at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Kentucky. I'd either want to be a surgeon or work in their Sport Horse department. How cool would that be? Working with some of the best hunters/eventers/race horses in the world!

I hope y'all read that in the appropriate voice.

Vet related-an equine surgeon at Rood and Riddle in Kentucky :) ohhh and I LOVE equine neonatolgy so I would want to work in that too!

Non-Vet related-an alaskan crab fishermen..no no...probably a pilot

Dogs, cats, avian and exotics

BTW I visited Best Friends this summer on my way to Zion National Park in Utah. And the crazy thing is I didn't even know they existed there until a local told us!! AWESOME place. I'd love to do an externship there! (But I already did my senior externships for the year :()
I wanna go back! SO NEAT! (Oh- and 5 full time vets!!)

Ok someone inform the aussie ... What is best friends? Lol ellie that is amazing. Skittles ditto. Hopeful ... Yes yes I did because i'd actually had the same thought lol

I think it's this.

The 'largest sanctuary for abused animals'.

Cheers. That would be rather cool. Speaking as a former caprine rescuer, it was just so rewarding, the rescue work I did. Then again, my work with riding for the disabled atm is amazingly rewarding too. I think for me ideal has to let me balance my paid employment with volunteer stuff.

Was IN SPACE meant to be read in a deep voice like on movie previews? If so, I totally got it:D A space vet would be cool. Would you specialize in monkeys?

My ideal job would be to work at a small animal practice in Nova Scotia. I grew up in New Brunswick but I absolutely love NS. All I need for a salary is to be able to live a comfortable life in my farm house with my small horse stable. I'd love to be able to have the time to show and attend western pleasure clinics over the weekends during the spring and summer. Red (my horse) would be in his teens or 20's by then so then I'd have to get a Krymsun baby to show and train. So, I'd also have to be able to afford to get one of those too:cool:

Ideally, (on the side) I would also love to have a contract with my reserve in Northern, NB (and possibly other reserves too) and clean up their unwanted/uncared for dog population by doing 2-3 dog spay/neuters every month at cost. I'd really focus on educating my community about responsible pet ownership. Even if I only ever get through to 1/20 people, it'd be worth it. I'm from a small Indian reservation and loose/stray/neglected and sometimes aggressive dogs have always been a bit of a problem.

So, that's what I'd like to be doing in 5-10 years! As for non-vet work....I'm not letting that be an option.

When I was a kid, I watched this movie called Space Camp, and it totally made me want to be an astronaut...but I also wanted to be a vet. So I decided I would do exactly what was mentioned in the above quote...take care of monkeys on space ships.

Yes, you read it correctly.

And I would specialize on whatever critters they wanted to send with me. Puppies preferably but pigs or whatever works too. I'll bet bacon tastes delicious in geosynchronous orbit.

So I can be an astronaut AND a DVM? That puts a big gaping hole in my PS!
