best programs in chicago?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I did an away rotation at University of Chicago in pediatrics this summer, and all I can tell you is that Children's Memorial is the place to be. UofChicago is getting a new building for their children's hospital which is supposed to be open this winter. Overall, however, I was not really that impressed. I go to school in Detroit and found Children's Hospital there to be a better institution, but with less recognizable names.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! That really helped...can you tell me why you didnt like U of C and why Childrens Memorial is "the place to be"? What about other programs like Loyola, Rush, and UIC? Know anything? I'm from the East Coast, so I have no idea about these programs...

I didn't say that I didn't like UChicago......or atleast I didn't mean to......But I meant that I was more less dissappointed because it has such a big name in general. It was my experience that it is the medicine that gives UChicago its reputation.

As far as the other hospitals, I only know that UChicago and Children's memorial are the only ones with true children's hospitals. I haven't really heard anything great about any of the others.

In fact, I am applying for med/peds, and I have heard that all of the other programs (Loyola, Rush, UIC) are somewhat lacking in peds. That is all I know.

Plus, if you don't know, Children's Memorial is located in Lincoln Park. Such a great neighborhood and great place to party.

That's a pity, but I guess you can't expect more than that in almost any city (excepting maybe NYC). 🙁 I'd certainly prefer a solo children's hospital for residency.

My Dad was visiting family in Chicago and he let me know there was a great-looking hospital he'd passed by - yup, it was Memorial. 🙂 Definitely on my list to apply for next year, I only hope I have a shot! Someone at Temple did match there two years ago, so who knows.

ummm....children's memorial is not "great looking". it's a very old building in the middle of a cool neighborhood. university of chicago has a brand new beautiful children's hospital which is also free standing and barring hyde park, the peds program there is phenomenal. the residents are also much happier than children's memorial. my two cents.

I don't know what Children's Mem looks like, but UChicago's new hospital is downright breathtaking. Flat screen plasma TVs in every room! And the residents are awesome!!!

Oh, I should have clarified - he meant great-looking *for me* in terms of it being a major hospital in a good neighborhood. I don't know about the physical appearance itself, but I guessed it must be reasonable.

In any case I'll definitely apply to UChicago as well. 🙂 I'm sure they're both excellent programs. It's probably the only midwest city I'd seriously consider, especially being so convenient for travel (no way direct flights to Montreal will be eliminated as they recently were in Pittsburgh).

Flat-screen TVs??? Whoa. 😱 Hopefully the hospital surroundings are as nice...

Judging by your med school, Hyde Park looks to be "an upgrade" from where you live. Nevertheless, I have lived in Philly, but never in Hyde Park. So maybe I just think the grass is greener on the other side.

I lived in Hyde Park for four years behind the soon to be opened site of the children's hospital. Hyde park gets a bad rap cause its a little close to the ghetto, but overall, its a nice place to be. If you want to go into the city its literally a 12 minute drive, and there are lots of ethnic restaurants and very nice architecture in the area. it's no palace grounds, but it does the job. 🙂

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to say how surprised I am by all of the GREAT things being said about U of Chicago. I did an away rotation there earlier this year and was not that impressed. Honestly, I came to find out that the hospital's great reputation is mainly due to the strong presence of the Internal Medicine department. I'm not sure if everyone is just pumped up about the new hospital there or if they truly like the core of the U of C program.
