ECMO in the NICU

Hello,

I am applying to Neonatology this summer. I have been researching programs and where to apply. Some programs do ECMO in the NICU and others it goes to PICU. Does this matter and to what degree for my fellowship? There seem to be excellent programs (at least on paper) that are on both ends of that spectrum.

It's not a make or break issue. Some that do it in PICU etc arrange NICU fellows to do a rotation. A lot depends on your ultimate plans. For most, they won't be doing ECMO as part of their attending clinical practice so it doesn't matter. For a few places it does. Apply broadly then ask questions about ECMO when you interview.

If you know 100% you want to go into private practice/level 3 NICU then it doesn’t matter.

If you’re interested in academics, my opinion is to go where ECMO is done in the NICU and get that training. It’s just not the same to go and rotate in a PICU. Better to learn the skills in fellowship and then not need it than the other way around
