Curious if there are any current loma linda residents out there. I would appreciate any insight you have about the program.

Has anyone interviewed there yet? How conservative is it really? I hear there is not even caffeine in the entire hospital. Is this true. Help me God!!!

Location-pros and cons.

I consider myself a liberal person. I also don't enjoy people pushing their religion on me. Would this place drive me crazy. I received an invite but now I don't even think I should go.

also i heard no pepper and the food is vegetaranian. i wonder in the hospital they alllow the use of caffeines for headaches. i have an interview there as well. i would like to know more about the program as well. i am not sure but i heard they are more psychosocial. perhaps since they are against the use of harmful substantces and psychotherapy would have less side effects.

I'm a MSIV at Loma Linda this year and I'm applying for psych. As for the whole religion thing, yes, there are a higher number of christians here and there are a few hyper-religious seventh day adventists (the school's denomination), but overall, religion is not really pushed on anybody. You will probably encounter it though. As to the caffeine, no, you can't get caffeine in Loma Linda University Medical Center, but you can in the Behavioral Health Center and at the VA here. And you can always bring your own. As for the pepper thing, the main cafeteria in the main hospital doesn't put pepper shakers on the tables, only salt (kind of funny I think), but it's available everywhere else. The biggest problem is the vegetarian food. Yes, all the food is vegetarian at the main hospital (but not the BMC or the VA! there used to even be a burger king in the VA cafeteria, but they took it out this year. I think the irony of the situation finally settled on them.) and it is crappy vegitarian food. It isn't necessarily better for you, it just isn't any part of a dead animal. And veggie-meat gives you horrible gas. I learned my lesson and don't touch the stuff. It tastes like crap anyways.
But as for the psych program, the faculty are awesome and the residents seem happy. I'm giving serious thought to staying, but I'm open to other places. I don't like the location that much as far as aesthetics, but it's not too bad.

When i interviewed there, it was a good program -- great PD (she seems very approachable), a chairman from Duke, and the residents were happy there. Other than that, the only thing I heard people didn't like was LOCATION. After all, it's not really LA.

In general, LLU is like a middle program in California, not the academic powerhouses, but definitely, not the scut houses either.
