Hi survivor..welcome to our world!!
We have all been thro the initial prep blues..
Here r a few things u need to do for part1
1.
Preparation for the exam:
Subjects for part 1:
Dental Anat(DA),
Anatomy,Biochem/Physio,Micro/PAth/Immuno
Must have's:
Dental Decks(MCQ's with detailed explanation of answers)
Kaplan Review Notes(Condensed notes for each subject)
Old question papers(released and unreleased)
Old textbooks if any to refer(i used chaurasia for anat and wheelers for DA)
For the above, jus go to the sales and advt section of the forums and u can buy it from there..or else go to
www.ebay.com and u can get good deals.
2.
Applying for the NBDE exam
1.Get all ur college marksheets and certificates and also ur 10th and 12th standard marksheets, send photocopies of those to Education Credential Evaluators.(ECE)..the website has all info
www.ece.org
Ask for a General Evaluation and a Course by Course Evaluation.
a.General Evaluation should be sent along with your application for the exam.
goto
www.ada.org for more details.
b.Course by course evaluation is for applying to dental schools.
2.You can choose between Computerised based test(CBT) or Paper Based test(PBT)
CBT is more expensive but advantage is that u get results in 10-14 days and u can choose when u want to write the exam
PBT is less expensive, u get results after 5 weeks and has fixed dates.(twice a yr)
3.To apply to colleges, remember u have to write Toefl too.It can be written anytime before or after u take ur part 1.
Many colleges accept part 1 scores only but if u want a wide choice, u can write ur part 2 and apply to all colleges.
U need to pass part 2 to practice in the US.
Dont worry abt part 2 now..once u r done with part 1 u would have gathered much info and can then decide wat to do.
Preparation time for the exam depends on each individual..usually ranging from 3-6 months.Remember its not like back in India, that we jus have to mug and spill it out..here, u need to understand the basic concepts to answer the questions.
Check out the dental schools in ur area and find if they have advanced standing program for foreign dentists and accordingly u can decide wat to do.
Usually advanced standing lets u join in the 3rd yr of the 4 yr DDS/DMD course.
Some schools require u to join in the 2nd yr of the 4 yr DDS/DMD course.
Also get some good recommendation letters from ur dean,ur college faculty..some schools require 3 letter and some 2..and to be on the safer side, make sure they r not more than 1 yr old.
I hope i have cleared some of ur doubts.
Sdn is a very good forum and will help u with all the info u need.
Good luck with everything.
👍
