From a peds training standpoint, do you guys feel that it would be better to take step 3 coming out of medical school or should I wait until I get some clinical experience?

I was also wondering if someone could post the states that allow you to take it right out of medical school.

Any step 3 logistics advice would also be nice.

Thanks guys.

Take it as soon as you can. Trust me- the longer you wait, the more painful it will be. And probably more expensive.

If you can take it the day after you step 2, by all means do that. Different states have different requirements. Some require a year or two of residency, some do not. Luckily, the state you send your money to is just that-the state you send your money to. You don't have to live there, have lived there, or train there.

You need a MD so not before graduation. I think I signed up in CT, they had lax requirements. I took it without any residency training. It's a stupid test like all the ones before it, do the usual Qbank etc..

Thanks guys. This is the funniest thing I have ever seen. I'll probably shoot for Delaware as they have virtually no restrictions. Is this test like Step 2 CS where I have to register months in advance or can I basically wait a couple of weeks before to register?

I think I might have registered in Delaware also. Or California....I can't really remember. I registered a few months in advance, then tried to back out a week before the date of the exam (as with all the free time in intern year, I hadn't studied..) I believe the cost of rescheduling made me go ahead and take it. I didn't do spectacular, but it has had no impact whatsoever into getting into a competitive fellowship.

Remember: 2 months, 2 weeks, Number 2 pencil...

The paperwork is kind of a PITA, you have to send a copy of your MD or a pic of yourself, get something notarized etc.. if I recall. And it takes about a month to process. So it wouldn't hurt to get the ball rolling. But spots don't fill up like CS, it's just a computerized test and you should be able to take it at any Prometric center.

I don't think it really matters when you take it, as long as you do it within 2 years of medical school. Your peds experience will be so generalized you'll still be proficient in most general medical clinical aspects, just a quick review of OB, internal med, etc. and you'll be good to go. It's not painful no matter when ya take it.
