I'm interested in attending a school that offers an additional research year (or incorporates one into the normal 4 like Duke does). I know Cleveland clinic does and I know about duke, but what other schools do this?

I know a lot of schools will allow you to come back for an additional year to do research if that's what you want but I more meant schools where that is the expectation. Hoping to do this in lieu of doing an MD/PhD type thing.

Thanks.

Stanford and Harvard HST have this.

Pitt CSTP.

But probably just about any school will give you the option of taking a fifth year for research. However, the nice thing about CCLCM and Pitt CSTP is that we get funding for med school tuition. At CCLCM, our med school and grad school tuition is completely funded. Pitt CSTP students get $25,000 per year toward their med school tuition of $40,000, plus their grad school tuition is completely funded.

At Duke, the normal medical curriculum builds in a research year in the 3rd year. The entire class is given protected time to conduct a project in whatever subject interests them so long as it is loosely relevant to medicine. Many students use this time to conduct basic or clinical research. The advantage here I think is that one can still finish medical school in 4 years.

I think things like the Pitt PSTP and CSTP are really great and I hope more of them arise, as they are many people who want to spend time doing bench and clinical research during med school but don't want to commit to the PhD. The PSTP is particularly attractive because of the tuition remission. I've recommended it to many of my friends who aren't into the MD-PhD but would like a research component of their education and career.

There are a number of programs - HHMI, Sarnoff, DDCRF, Fogarty, CDC, CRTP, etc. - that provide for a funded year of research at an array of prestigious institutions. If you get in, your school will let you go.

These funding programs are very competitive. It's better if you can to get the funding on the front end if you have the option and know this is what you want to do. Otherwise, any school will let you take a year out for research. The trick is just getting the money to do it.
