Hi everyone! New to this space. I am a junior evaluating my competitiveness for MD/PhD programs. I have strong academic metrics, but with the increasingly competitive applicant pool, I am considering whether taking a gap year to gain additional research or clinical experience would strengthen my application. Not due to lack of independence. I feel confident in my research skills and goals, but I recognize that applying at 21 may be viewed cautiously by some committees.

  • Undergraduate Institution: T5
  • Degrees: Chemistry & Neuroscience (joint master’s)
  • Ethnicity: URM
Research Experience

  • Teaching assistant (~200 hours)
  • Editor-in-chief, literary magazine (~400 hours): mentored contributors and highlighted student work.

Very strong app. You should not have a problem getting accepted somewhere. You also have a strong profile to Tier 1 med schools. Good luck in your app cycle.
