Official Baylor College of Medicine entering class 2005

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i'm writing dr. bradshaw a letter (not dean michael, right? even if he's the dean of admissions?), and i'm trying to find his address. So far i've got:

Dr. Major M. Bradshaw
BCM104

Anyone know what goes after that? Thanks 😀

Hey guys,

Just wondering if any of you are aware if Baylor is done sending out interview invites? I wanna know when it's time to call it quits...

Thank you.

No one has any idea? Not only is the Baylor admissions committee ignoring me but the Baylor thread is too?

CaMD,
I just got an interview invitation today, so they're not done yet... And I was complete in September or October, so I had pretty much given up hope...

Out of curiosity, for what interview date is the invitation you received today?

My interview date is Feb. 4th. Did you get an interview for that date today too?

Emily

I'm not sure, they keep changing around the people you should talk to - I'd probably send letters to whatever deans you can find here at Baylor - but I think Dr. Bradshaw is the head honcho.

As for where you should send the letter, the rest of the address should read:

Baylor College of Medicine
One Baylor Plaza
Houston, TX 77030

P.S. No Egrets is a current BCM student in my class (and a pretty darn good friend, I might add). Good luck at your interview, maybe I'll see you around...

i interviewed on 11/19 with a friend, and neither of us have heard anything 🙁. Then again, neither of us had 40+s and 4.0s, so I figure a little more waiting is reasonable 🙄 .

I interviewed on 10/22, and got the accept call about a month later. And, I do not have a 40 nor a 4.0. Give it some time. (Yeah, I know, easy for me to say.)

thanks for the encouragement everyone....i'm thinking of writing a letter too - do you think email or regular mail would be the best way to go?

For those of you waiting to hear about an interview. All screening will be done by 3rd week in January, then it will take about 7 days to process that, and a few days to hear. Likely if it is getting close to the last interview day they will call you for an interview as opposed to sending a letter invite.
Cheers!

Hey Y'all

I haven't been around in forever because I had given up on Baylor. Finally, though, I got my invite yesterday. Hey Crazy Eyes: I realize that interviewing later at Baylor = fewer spots available, but do you know just how much of a disadvantage are we Feb 4th interviewers at? I mean, will I be competing for 1 of about 3 remaining spots?

Thanks, and best of luck to everyone. And to those still waiting to hear: don't lose hope like I had!

Good luck and don't worry about the numbers. Many, many classmates interviewed and/or were accepted "late." If you want to meet any of us 1st years when you come to interview, shoot us a pm. 🙂

Yall know what sucks?
These people that go to DeBakey High School for the Health Professions in Houston that get picked for the Baylor program can get in, no questions asked, if they get a dismal 3.25/25. Can you believe it? I have a 3.75 and a 36, go to the University of Houston right here in Baylor's hometown and have not gotten an interview. I think it's a travesty that these people get in automatically despite inferior qualifications, just because they happen to live in the Houston school district.

admissions is based on more than GPA/MCAT, even for getting an interview. there are lots of programs that allow you to gain admission to baylor from high school. rice/baylor, for one, and i think that even Uof H has one. the point of the programs are to allow students to explore something other than medicine in college--to create well-rounded physicians. and to be honest, in order to gain gaurenteed admission from high school, you have to be pretty damn good, so i don't think that it's unfair at all. at the baylor interview day they said that they had 4800 applications and are interviewing only 600. that's a HUGE cut! i am sure a ton of very qualified people get overlooked. good luck!

I kind of agree with unconscious and I wanted to see what kind of perspective current Baylor students have about that. I did one of the Baylor programs (S.M.A.R.T) and while there I got the impression that a good chunk of Baylor's class comes in through routes other than the normal application program. UTPA (25, 3.0 minimum), Debakey H.S., UTH, Baylor/Baylor, some sort of connection with Prararie View A&M, etc. Besides Rice/Baylor, none of them seemed hard at all to get into (the main qualification being that you are a minority, and would like to serve in minority populations when you come out - which I'm not ideologically opposed to).

Anyway - I've always seriously considered Baylor, but this way of accepting people seems like it could set up a tiered structure of students - the ones who kind of slide in through these programs and much more academically prepared students who come in through the normal application route. But then a part of me thinks that this won't even be noticeable and those students would blend in well. What do current Baylor students think of this? Do the "special" admits get preferential treatment or associate with one another? Please no touchy-feely comments and cop-out answers =] Candor is good.

just b/c someone gets in through one of these programs doesn't mean that he/she don't take the regular premed requirements and go beyond that. who says they are less academically prepared? i have a few friends at rice in the program who are NOT minorities, who have close to 4.0's (which is pretty hard to do at that school) and are using their time in college to take classes they are really interested in rather than just spending most of their time preparing to apply to med school. i personally would rather go to school with a diverse bunch of people from all walks of life, who were not the typical pre-meds in college. and just because the minimum mcat requirement is a 25 doesn't mean that everyone gets a 25. baylor's mcat average is a 34. if all of their joint applicants got 25's, their mcat average would be lower than a 34.

also, many other med schools in the US have joint programs that let you in during high school. for those lucky enough to get in, more power to them. for the rest of us, i don't think they should be a cause for so much concern.

as far as setting up a "tiered structure" of students, give me a break. did you ask your friends what their SAT scores were in college or their high school class rank? i doubt that students at baylor feel that their classmates who were in these programs are inferior, if they even know that they were. people get into med school for a variety of reasons and admissions committees know what they are doing. if the programs were detracting from the quality of the student body, then i am sure they would end them.

1. Rice/Bayor is competitive. It's different from the programs to which getunconscious was referring.
2. Admitting people without substantive consideration for their academic achievements (and this is what happens - look up the UTPA program if you don't belive me) can produce students who are less prepared for a pretty rigorous curriculum. I hope this is why we have medical school admissions in the first place (otherwise give me my 5k and 3 months of my life back).
3. I went to a school that did have some tiering of students because of these same considerations. For some schools, the analogy is athletes.
4. As for your point of "detracting from the student body" - I think it is a trade off. The goal is lofty - to produce a) a more balanced profession and b) more immediately to have more people practicing in underserved areas which need the physicians. I think these are both great goals, but a medical school has to aggressively pursue the students who contribute to these goals. These students might not always be the best in their class, and in the case of Baylor, sometimes the schools have to take large steps to bend the rules to let them in. Baylor makes their case very clear - many areas in Texas, particularly around the border (hence the UTPA program), there aren't enough physicians to treat the patients. They view this as a significant problem (which it is) and they feel that by being proactive they can help solve it. I don't want this degenerating into an AA argument - that wasn't really the point (although I should have seen that coming).
5. And if current Baylor students don't think it makes a difference, and I would respect their opinions, then I'm all good. I think it's great that Baylor is stepping to the plate in solving these problems, but I also want to go a school where everyone views each other as peers.

We all take the same classes and we are all held to the same standard. Nobody gets special treatment or a different grading scale. If you can cut it here, you deserve to be here.

Oh, and I'm not a participant in any of the guaranteed admissions programs.

Backing up what VeggieGal said, our GPA & MCAT averages do not exclude anyone.

Hey! Guys/Gals... Ease up now. If you havent learned yet you will soon learn that nothing in life is fair. Hell, I am not from Texas and my numbers had to be way hotter than most of my colleagues that got in either by one of those programs or for just being a Texas resident. Am I complaining? No, I am just glad that Baylor accepted me. Besides, if you are so upset, why didnt you do your research prior to now and go to the appropriate school and join the programs? By the way, these are not minority programs per se as one of you alluded above. You cant fault someone at these colleges for taking advantage of a great program. In addition, to answer the question, no, a "great" number of the spots are not taken by these programs. Please stop the complaining. If you have a serious question about one of the programs you can contact the Baylor admissions office and speak to them directly, however, I wouldnt recommend that if your application is still in limbo and you want a snowball's chance in hell of getting accepted. Baylor is great, once everyone is here and the few anxious weeks of starting medical school are over, we all realize we are in the same boat and help each other out and dont try to tier ourselves or let anyone fall through the cracks. Besides, I wouldnt want someone with that mindset or philosophy as one of my co-students and never as my doctor. Cant we all just get along?
Cheers all!

Thanks crazyeyes. I liked Baylor a lot, I just wanted to make sure that the way Baylor builds it class doesn't cause any problems with unity/etc..

I did do my "research" beforehand (spending a summer there), and one Baylor student I met said he wished he had gone somewhere else because he felt the program-admitted students stuck together and got preferential treatment. I thought it was a reasonable thing to ask about, but this probably isn't the best way to find out about it... And I don't like getting hated on =[

I guess I should have specified what I was talking about. I don't have a problem with affirmative action. The specific program I was talking about is the DeBakey-UH-Baylor program. I don't know anything about Rice/Baylor or UTPA. I've known a lot of people in the program and here's why I don't like it:

1. They try to play it off as an affirmative action program. Of six people I have met in this program, one is black, one is white, and four are Asian.
2. Someone suggested trying to apply to such programs. One other problem I have is that you must attend DeBakey HS in HISD to get into the program. Why should people get preferential treatment for living in Houston?
3. Of the aforementioned six people, two had great numbers and totall deserved to get in. Two of them had to take the MCAT twice, to make a 25. They wouldn't have had a prayer applying to the normal program. One other person made an F in Genetics and a C- in Chemistry and O-Chem, again wouldn't have a prayer in the normal admissions
game.

Also, I'd just like to add that I don't have my heart set on Baylor and I think Houston is a God-forsaken toilet of a city. I'd like nothing more than to move to Dallas or LA. So it's not that I won't get in that annoys me, it was just years of watching certain people skate through without even trying while I've been working my a$$ off relentlessly for four years.

I hope I didn't offend anyone, I'm sorry if I did.

New topic now...... Anyone have an idea of when the next round of acceptances will be?

I would be happy to have a Baylor c/o 2009 get together at my house (near UT) anytime. Or we could meet at a bar or restaurant. Maybe 4th street?

I also think it would be fun to have a big party for all Texas med school folks right after the match. It may be too hard to organize, though.

I think it'd be sweet to head out to a bar/restaurant, maybe tue night, feb 1st, right before the 12:00 am tx match. We could post to the tx medical school application thread. Im sure a bunch of folk would be interested. It wouldnt be crowded downtown or at most restaurants, like possibly Trudy's. Then around 11:30 head back home or wherever with a laptop to check where people are accepted in tx. Just a thought...

I think you're concentrating on the wrong number.

Without an interview: there are 0 spots available to you.
With an interview: there are greater than 0 spots available to you.

LOL  You think Houston is a toilet and you want to live in Los Angeles? Haha...it doesn't get more toilet like than LA. On some days I can't see a mile and a half from USC's campus to the library tower (the tallest building in the city) b/c of pollution...

You think Houston is a "god-forsaken toilet" and you would strongly like to live in Dallas??? As someone who grew up in Dallas and goes to Baylor now, I find it hard to believe that you've lived in Dallas for any extended period of time. If you had, you would have noticed that the only thing it has over Houston is perhaps better traffic, and that is only because there are fewer places to go in Dallas. Frankly the two cities are vastly similar, except that in Houston you have the largest medical center in the world... Seriously though, I was skeptical about Houston at first, but now I love it (especially compared to D-town), so if you have any questions about the comparison feel free to ask me.

Thanks, bud. Sorry to crash your thread. I didn't mean to digress or diverge from the original topic. Congrats to all who have been accepted to Baylor by any means, it's a great school! 🙂 The thing about Houston is just a matter of opinion, I'm from the west coast, didn't mean to get on anyone's nerves!

Oh, and btw, you're absolutely right, life isn't fair. And I can accept that.

But not before I complain about it first!

Hey all,

i'm new to this forum... i applied to Baylor in June and updated them in August but still haven't heard from them... is there something i can do to better my chances of getting an interview there or is it too late in the process and they pretty much don't care for me?

Hey current Baylor students (crazy eyes, BaylorLion, or anyone else i'm missing)
I will be in Houston next week on Friday, the 21st because my g/f has an interview at Baylor. I was wondering if anybody would be willing to take me to a couple of classes or show me around campus. I will not need a place to stay; I'm getting a hotel...but I'd really like a second look at the campus before making a final decision when the TX match comes out. Please PM if you're interested.

Thanks,
Stephen

Stephen-
You can just come to class without a host or anything. Class is from 8-12, so just get a visitor's badge at the front desk and go to McMillan auditorium (it's the one right below the auditorium where interviewees go at noon), sit wherever you want, and enjoy. Your g/f can come before her interview too - it's a great way to get to know baylor and there are always interviewees in suits in our classes on interview days.
-a first year

How long did it take everyone to hear about their decision? I interviewed in the first week of December, but no word has come my way. If the committee meets the same day as the interview to make the decision, why would it possibly take so long to hear back? I emailed Melody last week, but she just said it takes a while for the administration stuff to go through. doesn't look like a good sign though. oh well.

Hey there I'm sorry to hear that its been so long. I am in a similar boat except I interviewed in early October and am still waiting to hear. Fortunately, they don't have rejections or an official waitlist, so you are under consideration until you are let in, or time expires. Unfortunately, this makes for a very fun waiting game. Good luck to you. :luck:

I interviewed the first week of december too, and was waiting for the phone call that never came during the next two weeks. I just got the phone call from Dr. Bradshaw this last Friday, so I think it's taking them a bit longer to get back to us due to the holidays, people being on vacation, etc.

There is no waitlist and there is no set timeline for acceptances. Some very lucky few hear back within a few weeks of their interview. Most people wait longer. (for example, I interviewed in early Sept and was accepted in late Nov.) Several of our classmates didn't get accepted until March or later.

It's a bummer to have to wait, but it doesn't mean you are out of the running.

Good luck!

I interviewed there the second week of december, and I have been eagerly waiting for that phone call too.

Good to hear that things are moving, (although there is not really much that can be done now)

I think it may be the golf that is keeping me out of Baylor. Either that, or maybe it's because I finally unified quantum mechanics with general relativity.

Does anyone know when Baylor sends out the last of its interview invites? I applied in late Nov. and was curious to see if they took me seriously or just pointed, laughed and used my app to sop up some spilt coffee. Later

Hey interviewees!

I guided tours for the first time 2 Fridays ago and it was a blast, you had some really great questions. Maybe those of you who've been here don't have any more burning issues, just hoping to get in, but if you have any more random questions about books, facilities, syllabi, Houston, please bring 'em on! Decision time is right around the corner, so pick our brains and we'll be happy to fill you in.

Good luck everyone, and congrats to those of you I missed while lollygaggin' on vacation! I'm open to PM's if you have questions.

Hey LRmed and Sweatybrain, when did you guys interview?

Congratulations to the new acceptees - pepper us with your questions at will.

One warning - every acceptee I talk to chooses Baylor (at least so far), so don't ask me unless you're ready to be sold...

hey baylorlion..

I was sold on interview day. does anyone know about second look dates yet??? 😀
