This was a tough decision because I grew up in Winston-Salem and know alot of the faculty, but Wake just isn't the right school for me. I'm lucky to be in a position where I can be a little selective. I think it's only fair that I not hold onto the spot considering I probably wouldn't go there at this point given my other choices. interviewed at UNC, it was great, definitely moved up several spots on my list. Very balanced medical school, I definitely think they have their pilars in order, research, patient-care, education, community.

Just ECU interview and UNC acceptance for me so far. Duke outright rejected me and I haven't heard anything from Wake... which is odd since theirs was one of the first secondaries I finished back in August.

Did you try calling Wake to check on your status? I heard a lot of people (including myself) got offered an interview during the conversation....

Way to go, Bust! :clap: Maybe your username will be true this year. I hope so, you deserve it after going through all this again.

I doubt I'd be a model, I'm too short (4'10") But that's sweet of you to say :oops: I was hoping we'd end up in the same class, but who knows what will happen?

I think Wake is reviewing apps on Jan. 11 for those of us who interviewed in the latter part of Nov and Dec.

Is anyone who was waitlisted at Wake going to write a letter of interest? I got the feeling from the letter they want one if we want to move off the waitlist? Any other opinions?

Hope everyone had a great NEW YEAR and that it will be filled with lots of acceptances for everyone!

Congratulations. I am sure with your ECU acceptance in hand, you won't be nervous at UNC.

May be you can use some of those lines from 'Things To Never Say During An Interview' like "What are you writing about me?"

Anybody else get a "Do not despair" letter today?

Three months of waiting, and all I got for Christmas from UNC is this stupid letter.

Didn't get it today, but expecting it tomorrow now
 
I just got home and got this letter too. The letter says, we can send an update letter mentioninng fall grades. I am kind of hesitant about that. I took one course (Physiology) this past semester as an honors credit and got B+. I am not sure if that would be looked at negatively.

I am thinking of sending an update letter mentioning my fall grade and also mention two classes (Anatomy, Molec. biology) I am taking this semester.

What do you guys think? Am I gonna hurt myself by sending such a letter or should I just keep quite?:)

Sorry to hear that. I know seethrew from last year's thread interviewed in November, and got waitlisted at the end of April, and was accepted mid-May off the waitlist, so try not to despair. It's far from over yet. Good luck, guys! :luck:

Shahab, I'd go ahead and send the letter. They probably know you are taking the physiology class anyway, so they'll know about the grade sooner or later. It's not a bad grade for an honors course in my opinion. Let them know about the classes you are taking this spring too. Show some interest! :luck:
 
Could somebody fill me on on the contents of the "Do not Despair" letter. Is it a waitlist letter or a "still under review" letter? I've not got one yet, but I guess I should be expecting it here in the next day or two. And are they just sending out these letters or are they also sending out acceptance letters? Have they had a committee meeting since Christmas?

I threw mine away, so I don't remember exactly what it says. Something about "still under review, blah blah, rolling admissions, blah, keep in touch". Not a waitlist. I think they send them to people who haven't been accepted after two or three months. No idea if there's been a meeting and I think you generally get a phone call before an acceptance letter.

When did you interview there? I guess I am not nervous anymore. I have just assumed I will hear from UNC in April/May.

11/23. Actually, now that I think about it I think that UNC has my parent's address listed, so it is quite possible I got one of these nice letters sent there today and just have not heard about it yet!
Pretty nice to see your interviewer out and about. Would have been really nice had he been the committee member!
 
not to stop the party, not like the DND letter is a party invitation, but I don't think the DND letters come out in any order. Last year they were mailed mid-January-Feb
Monday should be the next meeting, look at last year's thread, a bunch of acceptances came out the finish week class were in session, then the next set two weeks later. Unless things are behind, I would expect every two weeks now. 10 weeks of interviews from October 1 through mid-December, then January to mid-March another 10 weeks. At 8 applicants per-day, 4 interview days/week, with atleast 8 being out of state, thats 24 per week instate. Then 20 total weeks, about 480 applicants interviewed instate. Which UNC interviews ~450/year.
Soooo...lets see 48 applicants reviewed per two week session. 4 subcommittees, 12 apps per, apps presented per sub, 16 applicants discussed per meeting, accepting half per meeting, or 160 total....yeah thats about right. So figure 8 calls next week, or maybe more because of applicant volume. Definitely fewer acceptances at the halfway point this year, or just less on SDN.

Um which address are they sending these letters to? The AMCAS "preferred" address, or the "permanent" address that was listed too. Ive been away from NC over break and havent been able to check either...
 
Try not to over analyse the do not despair letter. I never got one last year after my interview, and I waited three months before I heard about my status (interviewed in late Jan.).
 
How many people are in UNC's class? Around 160? Do they not overaccept?

Well thats what I make from last years thread. People who never got the letter called admissions about it, admissions just said that it must have gotten lost in the mail, but those people were not accepted.
Who knows though.

If it has not been 8 weeks since you interviewed...then you don't get the letter, so don't worry yet.

I am not worried, I actually stopped caring, hence why I dont really post anymore. I got jipped with my interview but thats the way life is. But several people who interview in mid nov have gotten the letter and thats no where near 8 weeks. Oh well time will tell but golftippy you have nothing to worry about. You have the exact stats of my friend from Wake who actually worked in oncology I was telling you about for a year and he interviewed in october, got the dnd in january, got accepted in feb, got a scholariship in April.... good luck

Haha, thanks Bob but I definately don't think I'm a shoe-in by any means...anyway what happened with your interview (did I miss that post?). Irregardless I don't think you've been forgotten, and its tough to really tell how important the interview is so keep your head up man.

Sorry, this happened to me at Emory and wrecked my whole day, so I know where you are coming from...if UNC is your top choice, I might consider petitioning for another interview with the dean of admissions, they might give you a shot. Also, will you PM me the name of your interviewer because she might have been mine as well.

Yeah it wasnt cool
 
To answer a couple peoples questions, the do not despair letter was actually sent to my permanent address, not my school address, so it kinda freaked me out for a lil bit till my parents called me and said i got a letter. Also to answer the other persons question UNC's class is 142, 122 are reserved for in state applicants the other 20 are reserved for out of state applicants. Crossing my fingers for monday, hopefully another adcom meeting, but we'll see, keep us updated.

It's a week with Friday the 13th occuring... monday unc could meet.. wake meets on wednesday... something's gotta happen this week!!!
