Hello,
Fellow Proffesionals and Pre-Professionals. I am a Pre-Med student but I wanted to share a story with you guys, I guess maybe to open up your eyes or just to shed light upon a situation regarding a formal Dental Student.
My brother has always been a hard worker and has always made good grades in Undergrad never made less than A's except with the exceptional B's prbably in O-Chem or something. He always wanted to become a dentist ever since he had started undergrad. He eventually did the normal pre-dental stuff got good grades did extra-cirricular activities volunteered and shadowed a handfull of dentist and before dental school worked pretty much as a dental assisstant. Well that day came he got accepted to dental school, we were all happy we drove up to Philadelphia, (notice im not exploiting the school's name but I think a bright handfull of pre-dental and dental students can figure this out 😉 ) he got there we left back to Florida and he stayed. About 1 month ina half the first semester of dental school started, he was eager to start but very nervous at the same time. As the days flew by and the weeks became months he thought that he was doing pretty good and he was getting pretty good grades considering it being his first semester in dental school. But soon enough little he knew that would all end. He met a couple of people in a "Dental Student Club" of some sort and after a week they told him that he needed to get into the club and be part of it, they offered benefits like old exams and from what it looked like fake study notes. And my brother refused he said he didn't want to join at the moment and he knew he was doing fine in school so he still refused, partially because you also needed to pay I don't know how many hundred's of dollars to join. But a week went by and he started recieving anonymos phone calls and threatning letters with no return address, he contacted authorities but they were not able to do anything. So he kind of brushed it off and kept on studying, after a while the calls intensified now with "I know you leave your house at this time and were gonna catch you" to "I know were you live and we are gonna KILL you" and what they said the specifics and the times it was like they were watching almost 24/7! After a while his grades started suffering, but in the mist of that he kept studying and trying to progress. This went on for about 6 months, wich was towards the end of the first year. He would study for hours on end and make sure that he knew the material and could score atleast a passing grade on the exam, but when he took the exams it seemed like he didn't learn anything or didn't study one bit because all he got from that point on were failing grades "F's", and the fact that these anonymous people had connections as stated in threatining letters it became a paranoya in my brothers mind, as he knew but he knew that it was almost impossible for him to have failed those exams he still did try. But the calls only intensified even more and more and more he tried to tell his roomates but he had a real gut feeling that they were in on this to. He even tried to get another apartment and new rommates but it was revoked as the semester was about to finish and it would have to happen at the begging of the second year. Soon after all this he recieved a letter from the deans office stating that if he didn't bring his grades up he would be revoked the right to stay there remain a student. My brother took all this into consideration he had finals in a couple of weeks but he could not study anymore he couldn't even sleep he became depressed deeply as he felt cornered and nobody could help him at all. Then that's when he decided to leave dental school and return to Florida to see what happened with his life, because the threatening calls had not stopped at all and there intensification had increased immensly, now it wasn't "we know where you live" or "we know what time you enter and leave your apartment" with specific times that were true, now they were "we are gonna KILL you" or "you are gonna die" so scared and feeling very helpless he felt without a choice in his hands and left school. When he returned he was in a deep deep depression, but to him on the bright side he left all that behind without a doubt, and sure enough he did. So about 1 in a half years later he went back to school and became a dental Hygienist and he is making pretty good money im not gonna say exactly but he's between 60 to 80 thousand a year only working like 4 days a week. I guess it worked out for him. But the reason I wanted to tell this story is because I felt like there needed to be some light shedded upon this situation after 4 years. So to all you Pre-dents and Dental students be carefull life is not always roses and lilies and all that good stuff. life can be harsh even when we least expect it, the important thing though is how we in the end persevere and how we can keep on trying and trying no matter the gut and voice in our head that's trying to let you know that you can't but you keep pushing and pushing!!!
Good Luck to all you out there! 😀
