Current D4, OMFS track, hoping to do a noncat after graduating rather than a GPR, but can't seem to find much info on the application process. I know most if not all positions are post match, but still ask for a PASS app. Would this mean I'd have to wait until the whole cycle to try to secure a spot?
Second choice would be an OS heavy GPR, but from my understanding if I applied and matched then I'd have no opportunity to be considered for a noncat? Whereas if I wait til post match I'm banking on getting a noncat, with the risk of not getting one and ending up post matching into what probably is an unpopular GPR. Just curious how to go about this.

Non cats are not particularly difficult to get into. If you can’t secure one then you are so far away from matching a categorical that you really need to reassess things. You can see that right now there are multiple programs trying to secure noncats.

Contact programs ahead of time and see what they say, but you may have to wait for post match. I took the CBSE Feb of D4 year and was in your shoes. I tried contacting programs before I took the CBSE for a noncat, they weren’t too interested in me. After February they were interested once I had a score. So if you have something decent or even lower than decent, they’ll be interested. If you haven’t taken the CBSE yet they may not show much interest.

Personally I don’t think GPR is that helpful, whether it’s OS heavy or not. It’s just not the same experience as a non-cat. But probably better than nothing. But you should be able to get a noncat, programs just need a body if we’re being honest.

Also the noncats may fill up and then reopen. It’s an unpredictable process. If you look on SDN there are still some available now. So hypothetically if there aren’t any available post match, give it some time, they’ll open up. And come July, they’ll take what they can get
