Small program located in Queens that takes two residents per year. Bulk of your training is spent at two sites - Mary Immaculate Hospital (MIH) and All City Ophthalmology Services (ACOS). MIH is a small hospital located in Queens that is part of the Caritas Healthcare system. The hospital almost closed until Caritas purchased it recently. The facilties at MIH are very subpar. There is one hallway dedicated to ophtho residents with four rooms. Out of the four, three rooms are very tiny, while the fourth is of adequate size. All of the equipment is very old and does not function well. MIH usually has one first year, one second year and one third year. Attendings are only present for a fraction of the week which means you run the clinic with supervision mostly from a second year only. The other site is ACOS - a private practive run by a group. The facilties are nicer, and newer but it is mostly private patients. ACOS is also where there are grand rounds once a week where each resident gets up and presents a case. There was talk of the program shutting down in the past years so the situation is still pretty unstable. The surgical numbers are low and residents often bicker over who gets what case. Overall, my friend who rotated there decided not to even apply to the program. Hope this helps.
