Does anyone know anything about SUNY at Stony Brook's department of ophthalmology or its future residency program?

I am a PGY3 at the program right now.

We have 2 residents per year, so we have a small program. I am very happy here. The only real drawback I see is that we cannot have a dedicated 3 months of research time, for example. That being said, two of our residents are doing long term basic science projects, so it's absolutely doable.

The chair and faculty are some of the most accessible that I have seen, having done multiple away rotations at other places in medical school. We are also well represented in terms of subspecialty doctors. For example, we have two faculty for oculoplastics, which is rare for such a small program. I can call any of our doctors at any time and not feel like I'm imposing.

Our clinical volume is excellent, and we approach 150 primary cataracts each at the end of our three years. Having a VA greatly helps our numbers, and in general to have such a high surgical volume you have to see a high volume of patients. We start primary cataract surgery our second year so we have a nice head start compared to most programs. In fact, I have already done 11 primary cataracts and it is early November in my second year. That is rare around here. We are also a level one trauma center so we see any and every type of patient here.

I am from the NYC area and it is nice to be close to home. I am able to come to the city most weekends, as our call schedule allows us to only work one weekend per month.

We also just built and opened a brand new resident clinic which has teaching scopes on every slit lamp. We have daily lectures and an excellent lecture program run by our faculty.

I really recommend the program.
