Summa Health System/NEOUCOM

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Curriculum: Primarily resident-run clinic with 1-4 half-days of attendings' subspecialty clinic mixed in. Start slow and work up more patients with experience. Two months of peds at children's hospital as PGY-2 and PGY-3.

Call: Light overall. Split between all six residents, but attendings also take primary (didn't write down call days per month). As a senior, you are given the option to manage calls over the phone as if you were in your own private practice.

Numbers: Average across the board, possibly stronger in retina and weaker in phacos.

Summa is a small, community-based program located in Akron, which is just south of Cleveland. Many of the faculty and residents are from the area, and the chair - very nice guy - admitted his goal is to train clinicians who will ultimately practice in the area. He also mentioned that the program wouldn't be suited for anyone trying to get a competitive fellowship and that most research opportunities would be with peds. Residents were well-rested and enjoy the intimacy of the program as well as some of the perks of being in a public university system. Would recommend for those planning on comprehensive rather than fellowship.
