Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone know (either from experience or spending hours scrolling through MdApps) how many interviews are given after the New Year. I assume that most all of the schools are going on break (even adcoms need some Holiday cheer so they can continue feeling good about themselves while they crush our dreams) so I assume we won't be hearing from schools until mid January.

I know schools interview through March (some April) but are those interviews already set?

Specifically, do you know of schools in particular that usually finish all their interview invites early or that still have maybe half to pass out?

I assume I am not the only one who is curious about this and I am sorry if this is already posted elsewhere. (When I search "interview" its like a jungle!!)
 
Depends on the school, but plenty. Some schools interview seasons just started.

Do not worry. You'll probably get more, you've got a good GPA, and you've already been accepted somewhere which puts you ahead of lots of other people. Congrats, and relax! SDN makes everyone freak out.

Thanks. haha while I am hoping for more interviews, I am not really freaking out. I am trying to get a job for a few months so I can make some money, but I kind of want to gauge the number of "vacations" I will be taking (or if I will be taking any). However, that was the politest way ANYONE on this board has ever tried to calm down a person who was "freaking out" so, Thank you for that!
 
uh, well I"m pretty sure (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) that Stanford's interview season didn't start until this month. Some people already have interviews there, but still.... the majority of interviews happen from DEC-MARCH.

Also, AECOM, SUNY Downstate and Jefferson tend to interview all the way into March/April. My student guides at SUNY Downstate all interviewed after the New Year, some as late as March, and were all accepted (obviously).

I don't know specifics about other schools because those are ones I'm actually applying too, but of the people who I know who are already IN medical school, most did not interview until Jan/Feb/March. Seriously, SDN is filled with a lot of neurotic people (I mean, I'm neurotic, it's not an insult or anything... just reading these threads can give you a VERY skewed view of the application process) so they all claim it is important to be interviewing in October. That's just not true. Most people don't get interviews until after the New Year. If you just look around, you'll see plenty of people who have been complete since JULY or AUGUST and still don't have any interviews, or maybe have one. I was complete in late October (which some might say is "late" but "early" and "late" are VERY subjective) and I've got three interviews, one rejection and one hold. The rest? Have not gotten back to me. I'm sure I'll hear next year. Besides, those that got an interview almost immediately were probably top of the pile candidates. I can only assume I was on the top of the interview offer pile at the three schools I got interviews at because they responded within three weeks to my complete application. The rest have kept me waiting, probably because they are still considering me, but I'm just not good enough to get an immediate invite. That's just my two cents.
 
While I agree with the philosophy that people should relax a bit...it isn't true that schools still have the majority of their interview invites to give.

Case in point:

Michigan:
(Updated 12/13/07)
Applications Received: 5801
(10% Increase from 2006)
Interviews Offered: 680 of 800
Admissions Offers made: 70%

Beyond that, if you look at the acceptance thread, you'll see some schools have accepted 20 people or more. If you buy the conventional wisdom that SDN represents 5-10% of the premed applicant pool, that extrapolates to a pretty high percentage of all of the acceptances said schools will likely grant. Some examples include Pittsburgh, Vanderbilt, and lots of the state schools. If they have 150 seats, you can assume they'll accept 250-300 people, which means they may be well on their way to those totals.

I don't mean to be taking hope away from anyone with these comments but saying that it's still early in the cycle and that most interviews are granted after the new year is patently false. We're at least halfway through the cycle. A good deal of interviews are likely to be granted after the 1st of the year, but managing your expectations may be a good thing as well.

You just can't depend so much on averages and statistics in this application process, there are way too many exceptions. Of the people I know in med school, yeah, most of them got their interviews after the New Year. It's a biased sample, but it's what I know, and it happens. I think instilling some hope is not a bad thing and what I said is pretty realistic. I believe there are PLENTY of interviews at PLENTY of schools. Maybe not the majority but there are still plenty. I hope you understand what I am saying. So, I don't think we are really disagreeing, I was just trying to be supportive and hopeful.

Certain schools (USC, Stanford, etc...) and essentially any of the schools that started late will probably have more interviews left than others. I just think people should be realistic about their chances.

Congrats on your USC interview! I'm hoping to hear from them and had given up hope. I was complete there in mid September.
 
That's interesting that you mention USC as having relatively more interviews to give out. I was told by an SDN poster that even in October or November it was simply way too late in the game for any of the Cali schools. I don't want to get my hopes up...
 
Oh, and as for the theme of the thread. I think a few schools might be giving out some more interviews before the New Year. I just got an interview invite at Drexel yesterday.

Well, I am not saying that there are no interviews handed out, but I am sure the invites have slowed down quite a bit.

Oh and I agree with people that it depends on the schools. I was just hoping someone knew which schools fit into which category. For instance, are there any current med students who had a lot of late interviews?

I'm waiting to hear from 11, pure silence from all but one of them. I'm expecting them all to be rejections, as all my interview offers came within 2-4 weeks of being complete. But I think there's a slim chance one of them (EVMS?) may come through - c'mon late applicants/low GPA/whatever other group I'm unfortunately in.

As an aside, it is very misleading to the people searching profiles for you to list your MCAT score as 32 in your mdapps profile. Only GW and a couple other schools would consider your score that way. Most schools will look at your most recent score (29), or the average (29.5), or your highest overall score (30).

Well I certainly didn't do it to mislead anyone... that is why I listed my MCAT scores. However, GW is certainly not the only school that looks at the best in each section. According to the Princeton Review this includes UCLA, UCDavis, Emory, Boston Univ, Tufts, Wake Forest, Mt Sinai, VCU, EVMS, and I am sure the list is longer than that. I put my scores up like that because I feel that was the best I could do in every section and we can choose how to present ourselves any way we like. I also put up all of my MCAT scores so people can see that there is a break down if they really care.

On that note, if my MCAT scores are really that important to anyone... I am terribly sorry for them.

Thanks by the way. Congrats on your Maryland interview. Its a breathtakingly beautiful school and they would have to be mentally challenged not to accept you. If you have even half the personality in real life that you have on SDN then you are one of the few people on this site I would actually want to go to school with (mostly because you have what I like to call "a sense of humor")

i don't know how you figure from the princeton Review that they split up the scores and take the best in each subject. Tufts and BU, for example, say they take "the best set of scores." i read that as if you take it twice they take the best "set." not that they split them up and take the best in each.

i see no evidence that any school does that.

emory also says best "set."

Are you sihting me????? 😱 I know each school wants to sell itself, but jeez, Michigan, a little modesty could go a long way. So glad didn't apply there!!!

okay enough is enough... my MCAT scores are not that big of a deal! Throw a tomato at me and move on!

It is not too late for Cali schools. I turned in most of my secondaries first week of Nov. I was finalized by the 13th at most schools and I have heard back from 8. SDNers need to sit back, relax and give the ADCOMS time to sort through the thousands of applications.

get over yourself. no one cares about YOUR MCAT scores. certainly not me.

but SDN is a useful source of info and i think you put out bad info here. there is no evidence that any schools split up MCAT scores and take the best in each. your cited source for that -- Princeton Review -- does NOT say that. do you have any other reason to believe that any school splits them up?

if you are wrong, which i think you are, some SDNer might make a retake decision based on inaccurate info.

back to the topic. from my experience last year, which is limited at the very best, i got half my interview invites in the second half of the season. i'm not trying to extrapolate that to all schools or everyone's experience, just adding my two cents.

Well, I just got an invite earlier this week after being complete for many months. My PI told me that after speaking with the dean that they were just behind on the process.

wow, that is really interesting. by second half, i assume you mean after Jan 1st. how many schools did you hear from after that?

fyi -- friend of mine got invite from tufts in late jan, accepted 2 weeks later.

That list isn't very reassuring. As you said, a late interview doesn't necessarily mean that they were invited for their interview near the end. From the list, it looks like a lot of schools had to have sent out their invites by Feb.

Even if I am fortunate enough to get any more interviews in 2008, I reckon that I'll be interviewing for the wait-list at a lot of schools.

Actually I have it on good authority (BU and Tufts adcom members) that they do take the highest score in each section. UC Irvine and others do the same thing.

For anyone interested, this is what USC told me in their email regarding interviews.

"We interview approximately 500 applicants and our interview season will end in early April."

On the other hand, their web people are way on top of things. After I emailed them and told them about the mistake, it's already fixed.

Well, its probably better than going outside in Michigan. Besides, I can think of a lot of people on SDN who seemed to be chained to their computers and they aren't getting paid!

Well, its probably better than going outside in Michigan. Besides, I can think of a lot of people on SDN who seemed to be chained to their computers and they aren't getting paid!
