3.9 GPA with a 37 MCAT (11 PS 13VR 13BS). Also, I will be graduating from my school's honors program...aka at least 8 of my classes are honors classes. I don't know if that matters, but thats why I'm here I guess.

Other Factors:

-About 20 hours shadowing experience
-About 150 hours (combined) volunteering at 2 hospitals
-Member of my college's "assembly" (not that special, but I did have to apply)
-Member of my college health center's student advisory board (fairly hard to get accepted into)
-Member of the local student health organization
-Genetics tutor (employed by the university)
-Very active in a student committee that liasons (if that is a word) between student and biology faculty
-Have raised about $1000 dollars, and counting, for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
-Have worked in a microbiology research lab at my schools med center. This led to a undergraduate research project, which was also required to graduate with honors.

The schools I'm looking at right now, in order of preference:
1. Vanderbilt
2. Duke
3. U of Pitt
4. UCSD

Any advice on how to improve my resume/what are my chances would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

You have all the ECs I think are important. The only thing would be if your shadowing was for only one type of doc, maybe add a second for just eight hours if you have the time before submission.

Hey I'm in the same boat as you.

Same exact overall MCAT score and GPA. Although I have less leadership and more shadowing/clinical.

I'm a California resident. Are you applying to any more schools? Wanna Swap lists?

Congratulations, you're going to medical school. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.

well if you seriously need to ask 'what your chances' are, then maybe you are not cut out for med school. Just kidding
And just because I know you are craving affirmation from a random person (which is why you posted your question) here it is: you probably will get into medical school (congratulations 👍) unless you screw up the interview. G'luck!

Random first post.

Well the reason I asked was to know if my resume was good enough for the super competitive schools like vanderbilt. Also, any info on how to improve my reume will be greatly appreciated (like getting more shadowing, which is possible for me to do, thanks Stratego!). And also affirmation from random people is nice 😀. Thanks guys!

You´re welcome. I think your overall application will be great, but it´s always a good thing to seek to be better.

You have a great chance at all of these schools! I applied from a similar position this season and I've had pretty good success. However, realize that even though you have a strong application, there are many other people with equally strong applications vying for the same spot and that an acceptance is by no means guaranteed. This process is very draining and heartbreaking sometimes. Be humble and you will go far. Good luck!

Your GPA and MCAT look good but your EC's look a little weak. Do you have an impressive life story or hail from a part of the country that is socio-economically troubled? Otherwise, I'd say your application is troubled. Everyone who applies to MD school has your GPA and MCAT stats so you're goign to have to try to "stand out" a little more.

If I was an admissions officer interviewing you, you'd just be another check off my list of boring little Bio majors I have to interview before I get to the kool kats who major in Sociology and African Studies who are ACTUALLY INTERESTING. I'd probably fall asleep actually while you were talking to me about Leukemia or whatever that I have absolutely no interest in. Do yourself a favor: GO CLIMB MOUNT EVEREST AND PUT IT IN YOUR PS SO WHEN WE TALK WE ACTUALLY HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY THAT DOESN'T MAKE ME YAWNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN.

I think you are, quite probably, the least helpful person on this forum.

OP: First the obvious. Apply to more than 4 schools. Unless you are in-state, UCSD is going to be a tough one to crack, but you have a good shot at all of the other schools on your list. Have you considered applying to more top-tier schools (Harvard, Hopkins, etc.)? You are not really limited by your application, but be sure to balance with some less competitive schools as well.

WTF, I hate when ppl talking about how useless your academic achievement is to med school admission.

I haven't. Do you think I would have a chance at a school like harvard? I thought you had to be some sort of god to go to those top 5-10 schools, heh. Like one of the previous people said; I have no angle except for my grades/EC's.

I agree with muir to an extent. I have a former Med school professor/interviewer (from a top 20 institution to boot!) in my immediate family, and to quote, "Everyone saves the world in their summers", and "One of the most fascinating interviews I had was one where I spent the entire time talking with an interviewee about this rice farm".

Explanation if you didn't understand: Do something fun and interesting! Most people have the volunteering, the pre-med club, etc... but from your list, it looks as if you don't do anything fun. Get a hobby, go running, paint a picture! Avoid being the boring, forgetful applicant.

Your GPA and MCAT are stellar, no doubt, but they alone won't get you into a good medical school, although they do make it a possibility. Try to make yourself standout, and seem like a fun, sociable person

ignore this^
you'll be fine if you broaden the # of schools you're applying to. UWash may be good; they're a research powerhouse and will probably enjoy your strong research background

Well, even the best can strive for higher.
