I'm not set on uconn, but I'm deciding between that and penn (which were my 2 top choices - besides harvard which is still a very long shot).. I loved the school when I interviewed and it's pretty close to home for me. Love the small class size too..
im in!!

Tiny212 your from stony as well i think i might kno you lol

If you search UConn on the forum you will see, but I wouldnt take any of those comments to seriously if you really want to find out about the school just call them up and ask to speak to a current student I am sure they would be happy to find one for you so you can ask all the questions you want. Congrats on getting into dental school guys
what does "extremely demanding' mean exactly? know we take classes with med students, but is it really that hard to pass the classes on P/F system assuming people have just the norm prereqs and maybe genetics, biochem and anatomy physiology...maybe sajjy can chime in as he is the expert.
other bad thing with med curriculum i found in sdn is uconn students wont be as clinically ready and most go into GPR and AEGD, but thibodeau says not to worry because everyone gets enough clinical training and they have new sim labs for us

From UCONN websitewhat does "extremely demanding' mean exactly?
Extreme D.eM.anD.ing Curriculum:
- 6,000 instructional hours - the highest number of total instructional hours of all dental schools
- 2,000 basic science hours - the highest number of basic science hours of all dental schools; 2.4 times the national average
on top of Basic Medical Science (BMS),(M-F 8-12pm) the dental student also need to learn about Basic Dental Science (BDS).(M-F afternoon, i think?). So called Extreme Demanding Curriculum.😎

I did hear from a student there that there is a fairly high rate of attrition as compared to other schools, which may be due to the extremely demanding curriculum or perhaps something else...

🙂 Funny, I sent Dr. T bumper stickers with the same DeManDing insert. Did he happen to use that or did you come up with that yourself?
Wait, I thought he said they Already accepted the person who send that bumper sticker.
Dr. T show us two bumper stickers. One is I love human biology and the other one is advocate for extreme demanding curriculcum. And he said both people got accepted already. So I thought they were previous year applicants.
Erichen, I Didn't mean to steal your ideas, I just thought it was very cool. Sorry!
Then again your predent profile doesn't even show you applied to Uconn? Anyway good luck!!

Haha, thanks Korn, but I am not an expert.
But an extremely demanding curriculum is where you sit in a lecture M-F 8-12 and then Tu and Th 2-5 (not exactly same but similar).
There are a couple of students who are repeating this year but they had some personal issues. Almost everyone else passes. Although I have heard from them that the environment can be a bit stressful at times. I do not go there so all this are a hearsay.
But all this aside UConn is an excellent school with superb education on basic science (required for boards) and excellent clinical training.
what personal issues? like family crisis perhaps?
yeah one benefit of uconn i hear was the med education prepares us very very well for part 1, some barely even study for it (maybe 2-3 weeks of review), is this correct?
is the medical sciences like something that we will understand from the lectures an djust have to go home and memorize it for test or is it more like engineering where we dont understand lectures and hve to figure out everything at home (which is impossibla) thats big concern

Hi, I'm a current second year dental student at UConn. I'll tell you that the curriculum is CRAZY for the first year, and absolutely INSANE for the second year. You will be in lecture/anatomy lab from 8-12 M-Thurs and 8-9 on fri for your first year. The second year is lecture 8-12 everyday. That is only medical, then you have 2-3 afternoons of dental stuff. It can get stressful at times, but it is definitely worth it (I hope, haha). As far as the pass/fail thing, most everyone passes, but that's not the goal for most people, it's to do as well as possible; we all didn't get here just to pass, so the competitive nature is still there. As far as the negative comments on SDN, I haven't experienced any of those things, probably from a student that didn't like the school.

Thanks nicz888, haha, it's not much of an idea to copy anyway. The I <3 Human Bio one wasn't mine, but I decided to make the D.eM.anD.ing one. I sent it around october. I didn't really do it to secure an acceptance or anything--just thought a little humor wouldn't hurt.
I wasn't accepted, I was waitlisted... Hopefully that might change. Maybe you should contact Dr. T and ask him why I was waitlisted 😉. I'm not thickskinned enough to ask him myself, hehe. It's all good, all in all, I'm just happy to have been accepted into dental school and already consider it lucky to be waitlisted at UConn. I guess I'll go where God wills 🙂.
Blessings,
Eric

One question about UConn...is it true that CT residents are guaranteed admission if they meet the basic requirements?

yes

what? seriously? that can't be true.. there are some kids who are CT residents who got interviewed but not accepted
Just wait for a few weeks. Based on past few years, interview of a CT resident at UConn is an acceptance. This is straight from ADEA book.

sajjy, is the openhouse something we are required to go to or can we skip it? something beneficial and do you recommend it?

I skipped it because I had work. Although it is good to meet some of your classmates or to know about the school in little more detailed. Just a nice day to feel important there, LOL.
is it something for parents too?

My AADSAS changed to Offer Made on 12/2! I am really excited about UConn! But I am a bit nervous about the "demanding curriculum." I know we are going to dental school to get a dental education but I also want a "life" (enjoy connecticut, possibly even go to nyc sometimes, etc). 🙁
Is UConn's curriculum that different from, say, Stonybrook's or Columbia's (or another school that takes classes with the med-students)?
Im a current D2 at UConn and wanted to officially welcome you all to the school (i probably ate lunch with a few of you)...PM me if you have any questions or concerns...well off to bed MOD1 is monday, lol...congrats once again!
