USUHS Class of 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For all of you who are still waiting... I might be a break in the pattern:

Current Senior at small liberal arts college
average MCAT
3.65 gpa
extracurriculars: EMS cheif, Officer in 3 clubs, Volunteer Firefighter, Organic and Physics tutor
Non-prior military interviewed 9/18 accepted 10/15 Navy

Hope that helps and good luck!!

Rescuing from the 2nd page...

Btw, dealing with DoDMERB is as slow & painful as advertised. Avoid at all costs.

Well no call for me today 🙁. Here's hoping for January 1st.

🙁 Sorry. It doesn't seem like anyone else heard today either... the holiday season must slow things down quite a bit. Waiting really sucks, but hopefully it will pay off in the end. Good luck!

maybe january 2nd. I can promise you that no one will hear anything on january 1st

So I called today to see if the committee had made a decision on my application and was told I would probably get my decision on the 30th of this month. Ominous :scared:

Also, if USUHS reads these boards they totally have enough information to figure out who I am 😀 *waves at admissions committe*

haha seriously. I mean my supersweet internet handle is just my initials and part of my name so i'm sure it wouldn't be hard to figure out. Good luck man, it really seems like they're WAYYYYYY behind on decisions (goes without saying at this point). Good luck still

Hey Guys,

I got a phone call from Dr. Calloway yesterday offering me a conditional acceptance for an AF seat. Interview was on Oct. 30.

31 MCAT/3.5 GPA

congrats man. post your acceptance on the USUHS forum

Hey everyone,

I interviewed December 11th and while there spoke to someone on the admissions committee who I knew through my HPSP recuriter.

She said at the time 22 of about 50 Navy spots have been filled at this point. So there's definitely slots left.

Thought if there are any navy hopefuls like myself out there than you might enjoy having that info passed on.

wow, so there's over 1/2 of the Navy spots still left. That's very good info, thanks for sharing!

Hopefully this is also true of Army who has a few more slots than Navy. Airforce might be a little more full at this point.

Hi all,

I went to a residency night in DC a couple weeks ago and at that point Dr. Calloway told me that there were ~60 acceptances this far, the number it probably a bit higher at this point. I think there is still plenty of room. Good luck all

it really suprises me that only about 60 have been handed out for a class of 175. Although, i guess thats the reason they're waiting to give responses to earlier interviews.

On another note, dont we get like a sponsor in the class above us or something?

Yeah we do. I was under the impression that we would be assigned someone later in the spring. It will probably come in the welcome packet they are supposed to send us. If you post that question on the facebook wall I'm sure one of the students that currently goes there will answer it for you. I know one of the guys in the group is a MS-I Army right now.

any idea when we should expect this packet? Are we talking May? or more like march?

I know they pass out books at the beginning of the year. Does anybody have a list of them, like a pdf or word doc? just curious to see what texts they use for the classes.

I just put a message on the facebook wall for Edward who is a MS-I army at USUHS and has been pretty helpful and responsive so far. I'm sure he will post his response on the wall and when he does I will also paste it on this forum. I know I have the same exact questions as y'all. Hopefully he can answer some of them

I talked to Rebecca Patterson (the commissioning coordinator) and she told me that we wouldn't get the packet until early or mid June when we get our orders. It seemed to me that that's cutting it a little close, but as my dad (a Navy officer of 30 years) told me, "Welcome to the Navy".

You don't know it, but you bloggers have been my sanity since my Oct 23rd interview. It's good to know that we've all agonized a bit, but I can't wait to join your ranks. I just got my conditional acceptance this morning for the Army! Merry Christmas, boys and girls! By the way, does anybody else have issues with a waiver for flat feet? I have run two marathons, but I don't want to get my hopes up if this is a big deal. Thanks.

Any active duty Navy out there waiting on a LOA? PERS seems to be taking their time 👎 and decisions by admissions are delayed until LOAs are in applicants' files. My husband is also in the Navy and colocation orders need to be negotiated for us asap :help:

BUPERS taking their time?! Say it ain't so! Anyway I have been dealing with this as well and finally got my letter signed just prior to Christmas. My POC at BUPERS was Debbie Grandberry ([email protected] or 901-874-2083). She can be difficult to reach by phone but will definitely reply to an e-mail. Best advice I can offer is to send an e-mail every few days checking on the status of the letter. Hope this helps!

Has anyone had any success rebutting DoDMERB's findings (not getting a waiver)? I sent them a letter with test results in mid-November and haven't heard back yet... How long did it take them to get back to you?

Yeah, the waiting is just part of the game. Thanks for the POC. I got into contact with someone at PERS and they said the contingent separation package was on the desk of the two star awaiting approval. Is the letter of approval signed once the contingent resignation is approved?

Did you DQ'd or did they ask for more information from you? When I had to send in more info, it took them about 2-3 weeks after receiving the paperwork. I made sure to call in about once a week to see where the paperwork was. They will let you know if it is on the doctors desk waiting for a signature or not. I had to go through the whole process including so if you have any questions let me know. My advice though is call the DODMERB office once a week just to check on the paperwork. In terms of a waiver, that part is handled by USUHS.

Is everyone waiting to set up their housing situation until after OIS/OBC/COT when we get orders to go to USU or are people going to try to rent places sight unseen to avoid the increased competition?

I was wondering if USUHS has any time of loan repayment program available to accepted students. I don’t have any student loans but If uncle Sam was willing to help me out, I might take one out to have a good time before I start 4 long years of academic hell… Does anyone know anything about USUHS and loan repayment?

I'm not positive on this, but I recall hearing that USAA had some type of cadet loan. Perhaps you could get that before going to officer training if it's available.

Yes they do!! It's a 25K loan at 2.99%. If you're already ROTC or in an academy you're eligable now (18 mo prior to comissioning), otherwise I think you'll have to wait until you commission. Here's the info from their website:
Get a jump-start on your future with a $25,000 loan at 2.99% APR.

What better way to start your career? USAA's Career Starter Loan, offered by USAA Federal Savings Bank, is a great loan at a very low rate. You can use this money to:

  • Start investing
  • Buy a new or used car
  • Pay for education expenses
  • Buy uniforms
  • Pay off high interest rate credit cards
  • Or whatever you wish
What do you get?

This loan is specifically designed for cadets and midshipmen like you. Here are some of the great features:

  • A $25,000 personal loan is yours without any need for collateral.
  • Your payments will be deferred until 90 days after commissioning date, or if already commissioned, 90 days after the loan closing date.
  • Loan proceeds will be deposited directly to your USAA no-fee checking account.
  • You have the option to receive a 0% Intro APR USAA MasterCard®.
What is required?

Please carefully read these requirements. To get this loan, you must do the following:

  • Eligibility for the loan is defined as 18 months prior to commissioning date through 12 months following commission date. If already commissioned, payment is deferred for 90 days after loan closing date.
  • Have or open a USAA no-fee checking account with direct deposit and overdraft protection.
  • Set up automatic loan payments from your checking account.
  • Complete the USAA Commissioning Status Verification Form and have it signed by your commander. If already a commissioned officer, provide an official L.E.S., military orders, or commissioning certificate

Kinda sucks now that the rate has jumped from 1.5 to 3% apr in the past couple years. I'm trying to decide if taking it out and investing it is still worthwhile.

whether its worth investing is the real question right now. Maybe i'll take it and use it to pay off some student loans, 3% interest is a lot better than 5-6%

Thanks for the info. I was DQ'd based on the results of my eye exam. But those results were inconsistent with every other eye exam I've ever had so I submitted my old eye exam results along with a new one I obtained for the purposes of rebutting DoDMERB's finding. I'll be calling them to check the status tomorrow. Thanks again.

Yeah, that's what I plan on doing... sucks that it's up to 3% now though.

speaking of student loans does anyone know if they'll continue to be differed while in school at USUHS? I would like to hope so, but i'm not sure they will since we'll be commissioned and drawing a full pay-check.

We got $22,000 at 0.9% back in 2001. I wonder if they will give me another loan since I will have a new commission in a different service.

depends on who you owe it to. if it's the U.S. Dept of Edu, yes they will defer it. If it's a private lender, possibly not.

Just wanted to say I may be a potential classmate! Got the call on Oct 30th, the day after i got my eye bashed in with a racquetball... thankfully i still passed my eye check! BTW.... Air Force

Wow, that's awesome. Congrats!

Is USU your 1st choice or are you still waiting to hear back from other schools before deciding?

I like USU a lot. However, I am still waiting on other schools. We will see where i end up. I wouldnt mind it at all tho. Are you set on USU or are you waiting on others?

Yeah, it's hard to make a decision... especially when some schools take forever to get back to you.

I was all set to go to USU but now I am having trouble getting medical clearance, so I'm keeping my options open. Good luck with everything.

(Speaking as an undergrad finance major turned medical school hopefull)

Unless you are very saavy within the financial markets, there is little guarantee that you can make 3% right now given the obvious horrendousness of the economy and investment market.

Keep in mind that the financial markets run on a theoretical risk to reward ratio. Your possibility for making money is directly proportional to your chance of losing it. This makes for bad investment when you have a loan fee to cover. For example, if you were to invest with the goal of making 7% of the investment, you would only profit 4% while taking on the entire 7% worth of risk.

While $25,000 sounds like a lot of investment money to play with, I don't think the potential return is worth the hassle. If you make 10% on it (an incredible feat for a novice investor in this market), you would only earn $1,750 on it in the first year (10-3%*25,000) - somewhat of a drop in the bucket if you go to USUHS.

There are ways to play a down market to make money (short sales, put options, futures, commoddities, currency exchange, etc.) however don't mess with that stuff unless you have some serious knowledge about it.

Sorry for the novel, but it's not every day that I can actually use my bacherlor's degree haha.

I totally didn't know this existed, I would have posted long ago. I got the conditional acceptance last Oct for Navy! 😀

Not 100% sure I'm going here next year, but it's definitely high on the list.

I'm still trying to get physically qualified. I had three different problems. I had to do that body fat thing (damn army! haha I'm within standards for Navy but since they hold all of us to army I had to do it 🙄). Then they didn't like the curvature in my back so I had to do a x-ray - I called DoDMERB and the lady said I was fine but I still haven't gotten the official all clear. Now because of my pediatrician I have to do a asthma waiver. After talking to Rebecca she said asthma prior to 13 isn't a disqualification factor, and I haven't taken meds or had an attack since I was like 6. But my pediatrician saw me for asthma and prescribed meds "just in case" up until I was 15, so since it's on my record I have to do a waiver. Grrr! 🙁

Oh well, hopefully it'll all come through. It stresses me out a bit. If I don't do USUHS I'm definitely doing the HSPS, so not getting a waiver definitely puts a damper on my plans! :scared:
