Here are some links that I found useful when applying for a residency spot last year...
1. GENERAL SITES
This is the main (and really the only) search engine for residency programs called FREIDA. I recommend the "Search Plus" to help narrow your results. This will be the first step in your search process as you find out what programs are out there and click on the program name for more info:
http://www.ama-assn.org/vapp/freida/srch/
This website is the most comprehensive website that allows you to read reviews of programs from residents, students, and applicants. Also, the website will let you know the Match Stats for programs (ie. whether or not they filled) which can give you insight into how good the program may be:
http://www.scutwork.com/
Another program for checking out residency program reviews: http://www.residency.info
Info with tips on selecting a program:
http://www.aafp.org/x20249.xml
More tips on selecting a program, although a lot of this is common sense:
http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/6710.html
2. APPLYING TO RESIDENCY
From the same people that do the FREIDA website, a nice overview of applying:
http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/7011.html
This is from a family practice website, but provides a link to a general time-line for residency applications regardless of speciality:
http://www.aafp.org/x20254.xml
Another time-line, with more detail to it for those going into medicine:
http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/6673.html
and for peds... http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/7475.html#Pediatrics
for all other specialities... http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/7475.html
3. THE RESIDENCY APPLICATION
These websites are great for personal statement stuff:
a. Very general overview -- http://www.aafp.org/x20305.xml
b. Nice tips, with sample PS --
http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/6700.html
c. A very helpful website with awesome tips about what makes up the PS:
http://students.berkeley.edu/apa/personalstatement/gettingstarted.html
~ Remember to keep the personal statement one page or less (as it fits into
the ERAS application, which is generally less than 1.25 pages times new
roman size 12 font on Word)
~ Be sure to have someone review your personal statement from more of a
grammatical and structural point of view than a clinician's view
as well as someone from more of a clinician's view.
Good tips on letters of recommendation:
http://www.aafp.org/x20304.xml
4. INTERVIEWING
Interviewing overview: http://www.aafp.org/x20244.xml
What to wear on the interview (if you don't already know):
http://www.collegegrad.com/jobsearch/15-5.shtml
Info and tips for interviewing:
http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/6701.html
Overview of the medical residency interview:
http://www.kumc.edu/som/medsos/interv.html
A few basic sample interview questions:
http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/7811.html
This one has a lot of good questions to ask and questions you should expect to be asked:
http://www.rushu.rush.edu/studentlife/career/medint.html
A good website, with most questions that you can ask:
http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/Spa/6095/interquest2.html
Just an all-around good website for interviewing:
http://www.uic.edu/depts/mcam/osa/careers/Interview/Interviewquestions.htm
Awesome website, mainly with tips and strategies for interviewing rather than sample question (although there is an awesome link to over 70 sample questions.):
http://www.book-house.com/library/interview_success.htm
ONLY if you think that your interview skills in general need polishing, this has good links to tips:
http://www.collegegrad.com/jobsearch/15-0.shtml
Best of luck!! I hope this helps.
