Honestly, I dont' think it makes THAT big a difference to just "be a member to buff your CV." If anything, become a member, read the newsletters, and become cognizant of the current issues/problems with Emergency Medicine.
When I went on my first interview two years ago for EM residency, one of the questions I was fairly asked was "What do you think is the biggest problem facing Emergency Medicine as a specialty today?"
After the interview, all the interviewees were walking back to the auditorium or wherever we were supposed to meet at one time, and one interviewee was telling me "Man, I had no idea what they meant by that question, so I said "The need for metal detectors to protect our staff from weapons.""
*sigh*
So, if you want to do EM, join those groups to learn about the specialty, not to become a CV buffer.
