Could not have said it better myself. But the opportunity to earn some 'skrilla' is definitely appealing. 😀

No, there's not, but there is something wrong with going into a medical profession primarily for the paycheck. If you want a fat paycheck, go be a lawyer, an investment banker, or something else.

ya know, seriously dentistry is not that great money. It's comfortable and well-off money, but not power and influence kind of wealth.

seriously, if you really do want money, go into I Banking, yea the first year or two sucks big time but as you advance and develop contacts your salary will soon be based on %s.... then HELLLOOOO wealth!

my godfather upon hearing that i was going into dentistry said, "what? you wanna be poor? look at your uncle, he's a dentist, he can't even afford a jet! He has to fly commercial!" 😱

A dental degree is guaranteed 100 k salary, with the potential to make a whole lot more if you are a smart person. Most lawyers dont make much unless they come out of an amazing law school and are hired by a great firm.

i hate looking at people's ugly, crooked, yellow teeth, so it'll be great if i can fix these problems and make some money

Any lawyer I know worth his JD degree makes as much, if not more than a DDS. It's like was said above, it's all a matter of how much effort you want to put in it- one lawyer I know only has office hours 3 days a week and clears about $125K per year; another one I know works 5 days a week with a much busier schedule and I would not be surprised if he clears close to $900K per year. Maybe being hired by a big law firm is important in huge cities but the lawyers around here tend to be in much smaller practices (the biggest one I know of has 12 lawyers) and they are not hurting for money by any stretch of the imagination. My point wasn't that lawyers are exceptionally well paid as a rule, just that if you are looking only or primarialy for a nice paycheck, you shouldn't be considering a career field where your job is taking care of people.

You guys are crazy... 50 years of this stuff if you dont like it and are only doing it for the money is crazy!!! I am a manager in a dental lab and i am in contact with over 30 dentists each day and non of them make over 100k!!! The younger ones that just got out of dental school are making 60K simply because they can't afford to open their own practice due to the fact that the damn dental school loan they gotta pay off... GUYS THE ONLY DENTISTS THAT ARE MAKING OVER 100K ARE SPECIALISTS LIKE ENDO, ORTHO... :scared: 😎

That's funny....Not only do I know four general dentists who will admit to making over 100K a year, but the national average (based on tax returns or something else the government tracks) is $120,000+ per year for a general practitioner.

Wow... well here in NYC its a bit different... there is huge supply of dentists but not that much patients....to add to that the cost of practice (ie : rent) is much higher here.... And the average is definitly something that a dental school projected to get people into their school... if you ever took statistics you would know that you can deviate averages to you likin'...

True....but I've talked to practitioners in the areas I plan to work (and I can guarantee that New York state was not even on the radar, let alone NYC) and none of them have make what I would consider insufficient amounts of money to live comfortably upon. I don't need $100K+ per year to live off of....it would be nice, but I live exceptionally well off of the $55K or so a year I make now. I don't know what I would do if I was making double that....wait, yes I do. 😉

BTW, I got the statistic I quoted off of a US government site, not off a dental school site. 👍

Ive never come across a dentist that makes less than 100K...and the couple specialists I know make over a million.

Im not saying that every dentist banks, but you really couldnt be more off on your assessment.

Oversea is where I'm going. High demand, low competition, and tons of rich people willing to spend a fortune.

Money, hot babes, money.

respect, money, drugs, hot babes, gas, power, life-style - these are just some of the posts in regard to the question "why do you want to be a dentist"

doesn't the above list seem a little 'Gangster' to you guys? Here it is again:

Respect

Money

Drugs

Hot babes

Gas

Power

Life-style

What do you guys think? A connection between dentistry and the mob?

You are working with some broke dentists then. Endo specialists coming out of school makes $300 Gs all day long. I worked for a general dentist that lives in the same neighborhood as Brendan Shanihan (Detroit Red Wings). He's making at least $300. There are ads in the Journal of the American Dental Association for associates start at $150 gs per year. There is definately money to be made in this profession. I however have worked in a dental office fo 10 years now and I just love it. The gratitude people have when you help them acheive better self confidence through a new smile is very rewarding. But thats just me...

A few of the dentists I know make over 100k easily. One of the dentists I know made 75,000 in one day actually...granted this wasn't normal. He offered to allow a few Saudi dentists (who couldn't practice in the US due to licensing problems) to come in and shadow at his practice...they really wanted to come seeing that they paid him 25,000 each. Now he is in an agreement with the Saudi embassy to allow more to come over. The opportunities in dentistry are endless! All that oil money though means nothing to them, but proves they really aren't in it for the money.

would it by any different for a presidential candidate???

please tell me dexadental that u were kiddin about 75k in one day! Each Saudi payed 25g just to observe him? If this is true I am going to spend my free time preparing my future arab recruits. lol

On another note...My families close friend is a general dentist and he owns 3 practices and is opening another new spa dentistry office (I dislike this idea though) and is making half a million. Granted he is 56 and has very good business sense. He hires newly grads as associates and it seems as though he's always golfing and buying a new luxury car every month! 😉
