Don't know for sure... but I think they received a huge grant from the federal government. A big part of the rankings comes from research money, so that's why they jumped up so much. I think this goes to show you how stupid these rankings can be.

I agree. These rankings mean little when it comes to quality of education. Unfortunately/fortunately depending on where you go, it is somewhat important though. The formula for rankings are: Peer assessment score, assessment by residency directors, avg undergrad gpa, avg mcat score, avg acceptance rate, NIH research grants, and faculty to student ratio. Thing is, schools can play with these numbers to some extent to boost their ranking. GPA doesn't mean squat coming from all sorts of schools/majors/regions. MCAT scores, this is aguable, and I won't get into it. Avg acceptance rate, now I don't even know if they use the number of 2ndary apps to acceptances, but if they do, then of course they could easily play with this number to their advantage. NIH research grants has had absolutely no impact on my education, personally. Faculty to student ratio, I thought this was important, until I found out that my institution counts everyone from every department as faculty. If they give us one lecture in 4 years, they are counted as faculty, same thing if they happen to be the attending for a day on a service with med students. This doesn't mean jack in my book. However, I will ride my institution's reputation with the residency directors.
Yale has a fairly non-traditional educational system. I think the peer / residency director assessments might look down on it a little (compared to, say, the "top 5" schools). But, IMO it's one of the best.

strange they are ranked worse now than in the early 90s, since that is about the same time they started adding all those new research buildings to the med campus. Someone's son from the rankings staff at USNEWS must have been rejected from there.
