Hey kids,

Go over to Gaswork.com and take a peek at the insane number of jobs out there! Let's pray that this continues for several more years!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard that many of the jobs on gaswork.com are not desirable and there are better ones out there via recruiters. I heard that many practices post jobs on gaswork as a last resort when they have had trouble filling that position.

Not necessarily. Some groups post there to avoid the recruiters and the percentage they request for finding a candidate for the group. A recruiter who places just one physician with a group can collect several thousand dollars of fees which may or may not come off the new associate's paycheck.

True. Sometimes recruiters fees are in the 10-20K range 😱 .

Please explain what a recruiter is and how one comes across such a person. Thanks.

Essentially, if a hospital or anesthesia group needs an anesthesiologist they will contact a recruiter to help them find one. Rather than undertake the arduous task of trying to find an anesthesiologist themselves, the recruiter does this. They advertise in medical journals, the internet, and through mass mailings. Don't worry, when you are nearing the end of your residency, you'll get tons of recruiters mailing you info. When I was placed at my first job, I know the recruiter got a fat $25k paycheck. Not too shabby!

Hey! Thanks for the website. I am in my final year of residency and am just starting my anesthesia job search. I would love to do private practice in San Diego, do you know anything about that? Also, are there any websites or sources that can help me write a cover letter and a CV?

CV help can be found just with a basic google search. The samples that are out there are usually good enough to model your CV after. Most of the time, you don't need a cover letter per se to accompany your application unless the group requests one.

Just looked at the jobs in Hawaii: 0

Oahu is my dream place to work... Oh well, I'm still a medical student... maybe things will change in 5 years...

Any particular reason why no jobs are available in Hawaii? Is it because everyone is so gorgeous and tan, therefore, nobody ever gets sick?

I know a dude who was in practice on the north shore in New Orleans for 12 years who just moved to Hawaii a year ago. There were jobs there not too long ago...they'll come up again.

That's good news to hear... I would prefer somewhere closer to Honolulu but north shore ain't too shabby either 🙂

I guess all the anesthesiologists in Hawaii are probably trained elsewhere, since Univ of Hawaii doesn't have a anes residency program... I know the military has a program there, but me no like fighting 😀

and from the sound of alotta the posts in the Military forum (you guys should check it out...geezum petes!), nor do you want to practice third world country medicine.

Some of the older guys told me this. The really good jobs in anesthesia aren't listed anywhere. The guys in those groups will recruit from people who they know already to maintain the high quality of their group.

CVs and references just doesn't do a candidate justice. What a group wants is to hire someone they KNOW.

This is why it is critical to make and use contacts in your department and contacts you make through the ASA national meeting, state meetings, heck even drug rep dinners. I got 3 interviews last year through my interaction with anesthesiologists at 3 separate dinners.

They MIGHT contact a recruiter. Most of the better groups won't need to. It's more common for smaller hospitals or groups, or those in less desirable or remote locations (usually, not always). Arduous? Hardly. Sure, sometimes it's more difficult than others, but most groups are perfectly capable of doing their own recruiting. There are only a few primary anesthesia professional journals to advertise in - it's not like you have to call 20 or 30, and every practicing anesthesiologist came from a residency somewhere and the networking starts there. And y'all are right about big recruiting fees - which is one reason why most groups won't use them.

pssssttt, keep it quiet but true coin comes from physician controlled outpt. surgery centers. Group of good ole boys who do 15 shoulders in 8 hrs. 30 cataracts in 3 rooms in 6 hrs. 30 endoscopies in 3 rooms in 6 hrs. 15 pediatric TandAs in 2 rooms in 5 hrs. 10 Fesses in 5 hrs. HCA and Tenet ain't got nothin' on these cats. This is the pinnacle of coin -- 40-60 cases/day, 5 days a week. 2 docs and 4 CRNAs and we be in the top 5% of coin.Weekends? paaleese, Call? paaleese, Holidays? paaleese. Show me the money.... ---Zippy
