Has anyone heard something from UAB yet? (Just doing my part to add to the general pre-allo hysteria. 😉 😛 )

Nope nothing here yet, I am out of state though.

UAB has started sending secondaries to AL residents with MCAT score of 24 and higher. They said on their website that they won't start sending stuff to out of state applicants until mid august.

So we should be hearing any day now. Thanks. 🙂

I've gotten secondaries from UAB (e-mail) and USA (snail mail), both within the last week or so. I'm in-state.

Nope...out of state and no mail from alabamer.

I'm an out-of-stater, and I've heard nothing yet from Alabama.

Same goes for UPitt and MedUOhio (except for notification that they've received my AMCAS [verified 6/29]).

Other than that, I'm 7 for 7 on secondaries... but I'm running out of money so I'm really hoping Alabama will respond soon.

Nice to see some UAB people on here 😳

I'm instate and I got an email from UAB on August 1st, linking to the secondary and giving instructions. Just in case you are wondering, the secondary has questions like:

"where do you see yourself in your medical career in 10 years?"

"What research experience do you have?"

(for out of state) "Do you have any experience with the UAB hospital?"

"Is there anything you'd like us to know that is not on your AMCAS application?"

You only get 500 characters to answer each question, including spaces, so you can only write a few sentences.

Also they want all of your materials in within three weeks (you can apply for an extension) or they drop your app, so if you have some slow letter writers you might want to start *harassing* them now. I actually lied to one of mine I was so worried she would wait to the last minute, and low and behold she barely got it in by the real deadline!

I can't imagine they will be much longer with the out-of-staters. Their secondaries are pretty slow though, no?

Yep. I have now entered the stage of compulsively checking my email every thirty minutes for any news 🙁 Seriously, I never used to be so attached to the computer, after this whole thing is over I need to take a loooooong break.

I do have a question for anyone else who has finished UAB's secondary and is checking their "application status" page. Under the list of required things to turn in, mine says "date deposite was received." Has anyone else seen this and wondered why they would put that on the list of required items for the secondary? (It's not the fee for the secondary, by the way, that's something different.) If anyone knows about this... 😕

I think that's the deposit to send in after you've been accepted. They just put it all on one page.

Seriously, I think you've described about 99% of all the SDNers.

Well I wish they wouldn't put the deposit on the list because it makes me feel wildly hopeful that maybe I've been accepted by accident and just need to send in my fifty bucks! 😀

Sigh... seriously though, here I am again on the computer and it's a saturday. They are not going to email me on a saturday. 😳

lol, they could. I've received emails on weekends, late at night, and early in the morning. I guess maybe those are the only times when the admissions staff can work in peace without a zillion SDNers calling them to find out where the secondary is or when they'll get an interview invite.

Well, I've decided to accept the fact that until this whole process is over, I will be sitting at the computer some 80 times a day. Only SDNers understand. 😳

The worst thing is that my family/friends are constantly asking me if I've started medical school yet. I mean, how many times do I have to explain to them that I am only applying right now and at no time during the next year will I be attending any kind of med school?!?! Seriously, do they really think that I could have gotten in and not told anyone yet? It's like, my entire goal in life right now. 😡

Sorry. All the waiting is making me a little nuts... 🙄

Tennessean who applied to both UAB & USA. No word from UAB but received secondary via snail mail 8/19. No essay questions so easy to fill out fast. Sent it off today! Good luck to all y'all.

I still haven't heard either, but I think we will soon.

anything? anyone? anywhere?

They haven't sent out any secondaries to out-of-staters yet? Why are they so sloooooow? I haven't heard anything since I submitted mine a week ago.

No, I don't think so. I haven't received one yet either.

I know it's hard, but you've got to be patient, Boomed. 😉 You shouldn't expect to hear back only a week after submitting even though you're in-state; they need some time to process you. 😛 Did they already confirm that your app was complete? If so, you probably have at least a month if not two to wait until you hear something more. I've been complete at my state schools (FL) since the middle of July, and so far only one has started sending out invites as far as I know.

I have nothing particularly interesting to add to this thread, except that I hope interview invites start going out soon, and that I get one! EDP is a mixed blessing/curse, as I don't have any other secondaries to play with, forcing me to twiddle my thumbs waiting to hear from UAB... :-(

Hmm, should they confirm that my secondary is complete? Because they haven't 😉 .

It's interesting because they say they start granting interviews in early September, but that doesn't seem to be the case. All of the interview feedback for them on SDN are from winter time, even from Alabama residents. Maybe they'd like to do things that quickly but in reality they're about 3 months behind. 😛

Hey guys, I emailed UAB a couple days ago. My AMCAS was processed on July 12th and I haven't heard anything. The reason is they have not started processing dual degree candidates. I am md/mph. If anyone else is in that boat, that is why you haven't gotten anything.

I'm bumping this just in case anyone has heard from UAB. Which is doubtful... There don't seem to be a whole lot of Alabamians on the SDN, sad to say. 🙄

Their website was updated today, and the new statement implied that interview invites would be going out soon. They also said that the first interview day was scheduled for 9/22, and that the first few interview dates would be EDP people and a few regular admissions folks... Maybe once in-state interviews get going out-of-state secondaries will start going out??

BooMed, where in Al. are you from? I'm in tuscaloosa now, used to live in Lee Co. Let's try to keep this thread bumped up, for a highly ranked school UAB really doesn't get much attention on these boards!

I just mean that other schools seem to have a lot more people on SDN talking about them and sharing info. There isn't even a class thread for UAB in the allpathic section. So if any of us get in let's start one! 🙂

I'm in Birmingham right now but I'm actually not from Alabama originally. I moved here with my fiance about 1 1/2 years ago from Oregon. 😱 We both grew up in there but his parents moved to Montgomery about seven years ago, if you're wondering how we picked the South. 😛 I'm an Alabama resident now.

I'm all about some UAB coverage, let's try to keep all the Alabamians up to date. Have fun today and War Eagle!!

*giggle* The "Roll Tide" chant still makes me laugh. Thank goodness I'm going to the more dignified dragon "Blazers" college. 😉

Of course, Oregon's mascots are ducks and beavers, so maybe I shouldn't poke fun...

I lived in Birmingham for four years, and attended UAB. I live in FL now, which is where I grew up. BooMed, is that statue of Vulcan still there? You could see it from just about anywhere on campus if you faced south. And have you seen the campus recently? I know that they've put up at least one new research building and renovated Volker Hall since I was last there.

Yeah, the vulcan is still there. I love that thing. I never get lost in Birmingham if I can see it. I'd like to go up there sometime and tour around, I haven't seen it up close except for driving by.

I think that Birmingham in general is really improving. There has been a big movement in the last few years of people moving into the downtown area. We live in a loft in an old furniture factory, and it's really neat. It's still pretty abandoned down here but more people are moving in. And I can walk to the hospital/school in 15 minutes! 🙂

The med school is a big mixture of new and old. I toured Volker Hall last winter and the new parts were really nice. Sunny, open and pretty. The old part still looks like a 1970's prison or something. 😀 The cadaver lab is especially creepy down in the basement.

The hospital is amazing, of course. A year ago they finished a huge new section which now houses the emergency room, all of the ICUs, a new helicopter pad, etc. It's gorgeous. The next project is going to be a women's and children's hospital right next door.

Are you still a Florida resident, Q?

Wow, the hospital was pretty big five years ago; it must nearly be a city unto itself by now! Yes, I am a FL resident again, but I was an AL resident while I lived in B'ham. I used to live off of Highland Ave. near one of those little parks. It's a great place to go jogging and it's within walking distance of the campus and Five Points. There was a really good Mediterranean food place on campus called Al's. It was off of 10th Ave. and 16th St. If you've never gone and it's still there, check it out. 👍 Oh, and the Thai restaurant in Five Points is really good too....what the heck was it called? Surin West. A little pricey, but go for lunch and get the coconut soup. Yum!

ROLL TIDE and GO YELLOWJACKETS!!

Sorry, it's been a good day in Tuscaloosa!

There's a new Surin restuarant right next to us in the downtown area! We went there for dinner on Friday, actually.

The hospital is taking over Southside in all directions! 🙂

Al's is one of the best places to go after midnight. I think it's open some ridiculous hours so they can rack up on the 'drunk + hungry college student" crowd. Surin is probably my favorite restaraunt in the world. Coconut soup is great, spicy beef salad is amazing, and if ur in to sushi, I'd HIGHLY recommend the "Super crunch"

Our Surin is pretty sushi focused, but they do have that yummy soup. There are a lot of really nice places to eat here, and the best thing is that my fiance and I can afford to go to almost all of them! There are two great new bars downtown--a dive bar called the MBM that always has really friendly people in it, and an uber-hip place called "The U on 23rd." They have a huge drink menu and a small tapas menu, and the tapas are AMAZING. Mmm, my mouth is watering right now thinking about their chicken tandori...

Have you guys been to Bottega on Highland Ave? I love that place.

We really like Birmingham a lot, actually. About 8 million times better than Atlanta... 🙂

Yes, I've been there. There was an Indian restaurant off of Highland that I used to go to, also. I don't remember what it was called but it's near where the fire station is.

Taj India....one of my fav.

As far as bar's go, MBM is good, though i prefer the garage (good college bar) and sneaky pete's cafe. ($5 pitchers and kareoke on sat night)

Oh I've been planning on going to the Garage! I hear they have antiques as well as beer. Awesome. 🙂 I was wondering if there was any Indian food here, Montgomery has none!

If you all were to get into UAB, would it be one of your first choices? Would you do you last two years in Birmingham or at one of the other campuses?

I think it's a great school, and instate tuition is soooooo cheap, I'd really like to go there. The only thing that I wish is that they let in more out of state students (only about 14!), just to have more variety at the school.

i'd definitely say that uab is among my top choices. I'd take UAB over USA, but either way, 4 years from now, i want the MD. My dad used to work at the unversity hospital as a med tech, and i think that qualifies us for 1/2 tuition too. Ideally, i'd be able to go to uab for 4 years and end up debt free!! I'd like to stay in bham for my last two years, mainly because my family's there, but I wouldn't be too picky overall.

I've always said if I got into UAB that's where I would go. I would love to stay in B'ham for all four years, because two years in Tuscaloosa would be horrible!

I'd like to stay in B'Ham if I get into UAB. My fiance is in law school here and we own a home, so leaving would be really impractical. After 1 1/5 years of moving around, I'm tired of living in new places. I want to make friends here and stay here for awhile.

What's Tuscaloosa like? My fiance's littlest sister just started college at University of Alabama so we're all excited/worried for her. Their mom keeps calling us up and randomely asking "Do you think she's on drugs?!?!" We never know what to say, I mean, she's a good kid but she smoked weed and stuff before she went to college!

What a nightmare to let your kids grow up...

Huntsville does seem like a nice place. Isn't there a NASA base there or something?
