I greatly appreciate the outpouring of support that I have received from medical school applicants throughout the country. It gives me pride and a true belief that the future of medicine is in good hands.

Many have asked about the application process for Tulane for the Class of 2010. We will definitely be recruiting a class and will likely begin the process in Houston, thanks to the hospitality shown us by the Texas Medical Schools, this fall and complete the process back home in New Orleans this Spring. Unfortunately, nearly all of our admissions records were destroyed by the rising flood waters so we will have to begin the process anew. All electronic records through AMCAS are available, but our records regarding invites, rejections, etc are likely lost.

We are in the process of getting our classes up and running for a September 26 start date in Houston and will be beginning clinical roations at that time as well.

We hope to have admissions up and running by mid October and I will post to this forum as more information becomes available.

Thanks to all for your patience.

this is probably the dean himself posting online to the forum because of it's popularity i thought.

anyhow, good news because i applied to tulane! this should be stickied. don't want it to be buried while nobody posts any replies...

That's great news!! I hope things continue to get better for everyone along the Gulf coast.

Quick question: If we already submitted a secondary, and received a complete notification, will we have to submit another secondary?

Good luck with everything and I hope for the best for all of your students, employees, faculty and their families.

I had a question about the interview invites that have already been sent out. Will you be honoring those or will we need to reapply?

Thank you and again, all the best.

That is wonderful news. All the best to the hurricane victims-may their lives continue to improve. I have completed my Tulane secondary but haven't sent it in yet. I'm assuming I should wait to send it in, but just wanted to make sure. Thanks!

Well ****!!! The first real interview I received looks like it might be up in the air. I was supposed to be flying to N'awlins tomorrow for an interview, but from the above post it appears I may have to reapply and wait to see if I even get another interview invite. Not liking this. Really wanted to go to this school, too. If anyone knows what will be happening in regards to this particular situation, could they please post here or PM me? Thanks!!!

This is where those copies you're supposed to be making of all your applications would come in really handy. 😉

Tulane probably hasn't invited so many people at this point that the person sending invitations would forget your name. Plus, you could always send the school a copy of your interview invitation with the aforementioned copy of your application. You know, as a favor in case they lost their copy.

Don't worry, it'll all work out. Many students here actively participate in the admissions process, and the school is in the process of working out plans to get us all in one place. That will take another week or two. Then they'll be able to start working on admissions again. In the meantime, if someone has saved the pdf file of Tulane's secondary, it would be awfully generous of you to post it here. Or else PM me and I will give you the email address to forward it to.

lol, yes you can know that I will be forwarding a copy of my interview invitation letter. 🙂 i doubt they'll believe me if i tell them they gave me one! 🙂

Thank you for keeping us updated Dean Kahn. I had already completed my secondary application to Tulane before the hurricane hit but i realize that those records are probably lost. I was wondering however if it would still be possible to have an tentative interview in Houston since i will be there in the first week of october for another interview. Thank you and GodBless, Nicole Cooper

I was supposed to have an interview on the 14th....this is pretty depressing. I also left my interview invitation in my apartment in New Orleans when I evacuated, but fortunately it looks like the house didn't get flooded based on the maps I've seen online. If any other prospective students are in the same bind, please e-mail me at [email protected] so we can discuss and coordinate.

I had not completed my secondary to Tulane yet, and look forward to figuring out how to complete a secondary soon. I can not imagine what an awesome (in the traditional sense of the word) task it would be to study while rebuilding a community at the same time, but look forward to the challenge.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who doesn't know where to send my Tulane secondary! I want to go to Tulane SO BAD!!! I've had a special place in my heart for the university ever since they sent me one of those large glossy brochures during high school; the envelope had a picture of a jalapeno pepper, with the words "ORIGINAL FLAVOR" printed as if grilled/branded onto the paper. Now that's a school with attitude and personality. Unfortunately for a variety of reasons I didn't go (okay fine, got into a "better" school). It would indeed to an awesome opportunity of a lifetime to be able to study there to both witness and help shape the rebirth of the school and city.

On the Tulane website, it says they will be honoring interviews that were already granted, and you do not have to resubmit a secondary. You can call starting today to reschedule, if you interview prior to January, it will be held in Houston. Hope this helps!!

Do you know if they have a list of who they sent interview invites to? For instance, how do we know if our letters did not get lost in the mail during Katrina?

Wow. I am so heartened to read these student doctor posts. It really moves me to see that applicants are also seeing the unique and *awesome* challenge of studying medicine in New Orleans during the coming years. As a Tulane med student, I believe that this is going to be an unprecedented opportunity. I won't lie- it took a while to feel that way after a long and drawn out panic about my future- but I think it's the truth. It will be bumpy. It will be different. "Different" and "bumpy" don't always happy med students make, but a shake down can be a good thing. Med school is so intense and rigid and while there's nothing wrong with a forumula that works, I think this is a once in a lifetime chance to be given the responsibilities of uncertainty and change that no other medical students will experience but that every physician must learn to manage. The LCME will ensure, or rather require, that Tulane is up to par academically. So beyond that, being a Tulane or LSU med student in the next few years is going to be an unforgettable and, I believe, incredibly rewarding experience.

I hope to see all of your great spirit at Tulane next year! 👍 👍

This makes it sound like you can send it to the old address . . . that's my impression anyway.

Hmmm - this was not my impression, it sounded like they were routing things to the Houston address. Also, the page with the secondary on it has been taken down (although there is a mirror site up that somebody was kind enough to post). I am wondering if they took it down to change the secondary for those that have not already completed it. It would seem perfectly reasonable for Tulane to chnge the secondary for those who haven't completed it yet and ask applicants their thoughts on serving a community in the aftermath of this disaster.

I just called the admissions office, and they told me that they are not using secondaries for this year. They will be making interview decisions based upon the primary app.

I can only imagine what caliber of amazing individuals are going to choose Tulane. I really hope they grant me an interview! Good Luck all!

My understanding is that interview decisions will be made solely on the information they have available to them in Houston - the AMCAS primary. I suppose this makes the most sense from a fairness perspective (the applicants that already submitted their stuff would be at a disadvantage if the new applicants were allowed to send stuff in).

I imagine that they will be bombarded with this question and will eventually post a formal answer on the webpage. The Dean is also posting on SDN now, so perhaps he will give an official answer.

Thanks for letting us know Flopotomist!! I'm so excited. I hope I get an interview from them...🙂

I got my interview rescheduled! Let's just hope Rita fizzles out. I hope everyone else is able to get through to admissions, they are being very helpful.

do you guys think they will send out more interviews? Im not sure if they will even bother until january. I cant imagine though that they sent out a lot before Katrina. Who knows. 🙄

Does anyone remember their requirements for letters of recommendation?? Thanks.

Does anyone know how Tulane will deal with secondary application fees? I haven't sent in my secondary yet, and people are saying that they're not going to use the secondary this year. But they still need to collect fees, I imagine, to finance the application process. Even if they make you pay upon granting you an interview, that would still be substantially less money than they'd normally receive along with all the secondaries that don't interviews. And yes, I'm also wondering about the LOR situation, but I'm hearing that apparently they won't ask for them until after an interview, some say.

I'd imagine they would send out at least some interview invitations, as most other schools will be done with the majority of their own by dec/jan. I can't say for sure though. For the LOR I think they prefer a committee letter but they will take 3 from professors in lieu of that.
good luck
