There are many reasons one may. As he has said better neurosciences, more NIH money, might not want to live in NYC, wants a bigger class, not a big fan of PBL.

Cornell is great as is Pitt. Not like Cornell is even a step up from Pitt.

better neurosciences? are you serious? (really, I don't know) doesn't cornell have a connection with rockefeller (aka the best neuroscience program outside of the salk)? I know a lot of neuroscientists (and used to work for an HHMI investigator and member of the National Academy of Sciences) and they've never mentioned pitt's program at all.

I believe they're #2 in neurosurgery research dollars from the NIH.

That's impressive. And their increase in funding (across all the departments) has been recent. Plus, to make this germane to the thread, their match list speaks for itself.

Pitt is #1 in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences funding as well to go along with #2 in Neurosurgery. Their neuroscience program is top-notch without a doubt.

Another side note, over 90% of Pitt students get into one of their top 3 residency choices. Over 50% I believe get into their #1.

i interviewd in mid-Feb. both my interviewers e-mailed me to let me know. i read some where that some interviewers will e-mail you while some won't. so don't stress if you don't get e-mails. i'm still waiting for the snail mail...just so i can confirm that im not dreaming (of course, i stared at the e-mails long enough already...haha) :p

good luck!!!!! i loved Pitt!!!!

lets just let wowzer answer the question. i remember him saying he was stoked about cornell, so i'm wondering where pitt came from all of a sudden. i'm not saying any school's better.

check out his mdapplicants profile. he explains it there

There is only one student who matched into neurosurgery though. That's pretty odd? Maybe there just wasn't a preference for it...? Most of the would-be neurosurgeons decided to do ortho? :)

I think they had 3 or 4 this year (2006) though, NS is an early match that takes place before the regular one, which takes place next week. You can see it on the NS board here.

Jim

^From my count, they matched 5 into NS this year. Pitt, Stanford, Michigan, UCSF, and BNI.

thanks for the insight and keeping the thread alive guys. I got the match list from the "Pitt Med School Zone" site (I think zone.medschool.pitt.edu or something) and re-organized it/took out names. I will try to attend Match Day 2006 (next week!) and see if I can get a copy of the 2006 Match List.

no i haven't made any final decisions yet. i have my reasoning on my mdapplicants profile. I am currently in Pitt right now doing full-time funded research (found a surgeon to work with through Hopkins Alumni) to help sustain myself for the next few months and start working towards the reseach requirements for Pitt's Scholarly Project and for NS residency.

I am taken aback by the extremely helpful and courteous atmosphere created by the students and faculty at Pitt. I have not had one unpleasant interaction or experience, and the AOC Neuroscience mentors were nice enough to add me to their program half a year before I matriculate. While I'm sure that I could say the same thing about almsot any medical school, the good times I've had here so far are influencing my decision to stay here.

Re: NS matches. I've seen severla godo schools where no one matched in NS. I do not think it is a problem of not-matching; rather, people apply for other specialties based on their lifestyle and career goals. I know a student at Wayne State Med who placed into WashU (Barnes-Jewish) NS program last year, and several USNews-ranked schools that didn't place anyone. Pitt's constant success in surgery subspecialties, esp. NS this year, is very convincing. (I think NS is in both the San Francisco Match and NRMP programs, thus the early results, right?)

I agree that Pitt, not being AS well-known/prestigious or respected (as seen by several of the Pitt haters in this forum) may not be the prime subject of discussion when it comes to talking about institutions and names. But it is really is huge in medical circles. Eventually, we gotta let this whole name-game go.

Yeah, it is a good school. I know someone who turned down WashU and Penn to go there. She's in the top 5 at Pitt now :p I turned down my interview invite because I cannot see myself living in Pittsburgh, but I still think it is great, and UPMC is quite nice.

I just posted the NS thing because I thought it was odd that a school with so much NS$$ had just 1 graduate go into the field (that year, I guess). The large # of ortho more than makes up for it in my mind.

Yup, and the 3 in optho, 3 in oto, 2 maxillofacial and 1 plastics is pretty solid too...not to mention 4 in urology and 6 in rads
