Anybody want to add any criteria for choosing schools to apply to beyond open houses, interviews, school visits, etc?

class size
clinical affiliations
offering of preceptorship or clinical training before 3rd year
board pass rate
distance of clerkships from med school (will you need to find housing...again!)
fellowships and residencies offered by the school
PBl vs lecture
research (clinical or lab)
location (weather, social life, urban/rural, etc)
match list
diversity of faculty/students
cost
availability of fellowships
technology (STAN, lectures on mp3 or video, etc.)
mission statement of school
exam schedule
grading (pass/fail or pass/fail/honors or letter grades)
are student ranked (does school let you know ranking in percentiles or exact number)
standout faculty
stability of curriculum and amount of input students have in changing it

You have a really good list so far. When I compiled my list, I also looked at student organizations/clubs and what. I wanted to be active outside the classroom too. I think its important to stay active outside of the classroom.

Thank you, HunterGatherer. I'll definitely have to grade my possible schools with such a criteria.

That pretty much sums it up.

How about

Opportunities for international medical missions?

and

What kind of student organizations are on campus?

attrition rate

Policies regarding remediation (ie, is it 3 strikes and you're out?)

bumping for more ideas

Related to the boards: Do they teach to the exams or not? Are time off or other reviews methods (Kaplan, etc.) offered in preparation?

typical percentages of grads placing into primary care (worth noting whether you want to do primary care or specialize)?

Since you mentioned open houses, I have a quick question - Does anyone know of any schools in the Northeast that give productive tours and meetings with administrative staff to potential applicants? I am from CT, so North of Maryland and East of Ohio is what I am looking at for these tours since I can see the farther schools at the interviews.

NYCOM's Open House(usually in October/November) starts off with the Dean, Dr. Ross with a Q&A, a financial aid presentation with Q&A, OMM presentation and then small groups talks with Student Fellows, tour of school, and finally lunch where you can talk to Dean of Admissions, Assist Dean of Admissions, financial aid, and some a few other organizations. There was a line of about 3-5 students to talk to Admissions.

UNECOM - No Open House but you can do a campus visit and meet with an Admissions rep, sit in on lectures, talk to students, tour the school, say hi to the dean of Admissions if she is available, etc.

UMDNJ - Open House is in April which was after my interview season so i did not go. Wish I thought about it during junior year.

PCOM-Tried to do their Admissions across America where they have an admissions rep go to various schools, med school faris, etc. around the US. LOL!! Went to their first date and it was cancelled and nobody was there. The website was not updated until AFTER the event. They planned a second one in NYC but I did not go. Someone from SDN went and yes, cancelled again with no update on the website. These events were med school fairs that PCOM was to attend not plan but obviously the website could have been updated that the event was cancelled.

Thanks for all that info.

Are food / drinks allowed in class?

Extra points for allowing alcoholic beverages.

PCOM was supposed to come to Syracuse, NY as well and never showed... very dissapointing.

Dress code and if class attendance is required.

Dress code question is a must, and if they do have a dress code, can I get away with just wearing scrubs?

Also, what are the students like? Do you see yourself working/getting along with the majority of the people there?

Finally, access to a Wawa, I don't know what I will do if I end up at a school where Wawa is not within a reasonable driving distance :scared:
:::This might be a south jerseyian criteria only:::

i thought you were asking a silly question. Stupid me. I thought Wawa was any large body of water.

Next time I'm in Jersey I'm going to have to see what the big deal is with WaWa since i've seen posts about it a handful of times. what should I order?

Their coffee is a MUST! They even have extra caffeine mocha cappuccinos for those all nighters. Annnd it's cheap, $1.36 for 24 ounces! Hoagies (not subs!), wraps, and especially the soft pretzels are DELICIOUS!

Wawa is an institution in NJ, I literally have 10 within a 5 mile radius of my house. I knew my college in MD would be perfect for me when I visited and saw a Wawa coming soon sign 2 miles from campus…

😍

yeah thats right....i said it....ha
wawa's food is good but it can't hold a torch to the variety (espec in the mto) at sheetz.......though I grew up in NY w/ tons of $hitty 7/11's....so both of these places are a godsend...

looks good.

Now that we have a good list, what are the top 3 reasons that most people can agree on? I vote for clinical rotation sites and COMLEX/USMLE pass rates to be included.
