So for my fiirst post on this forum, I'd like to ask who out there graduated from Ireland (yes, already graduated), when, what you've done after graduation (even if you came home directly into a Canadian residency), where and what program did you match to via CaRMS and what you are doing now?

I figure this may give some light to those who are going through and some indication of how good an Irish medical education is and valued over here in Canada.

BTW, all of my Canadian classmates who applied through CaRMS, got in back home to Canada ... and also a known fact that UofO (Sudbury) Family Medicine had five spots left after the second round of CaRMS last year and ALL FIVE SPOTS WENT TO UCD GRADUATES OF THAT YEAR.

They are opening up a lot more spots to IMGs now as well .... 😀

I'll start:

Irish medical school graduated from: UCD
Year of graduation: 2003
After graduation: interned in Cork and Sligo, worked in OBGYN in Brisbane, Australia and in Co. Mayo
Canadian Residency matched to and when: Queen's Family Medicine 2006-2008 (first choice, first time in CaRMS - timing delayed by choice)

hi there,

i don't know if this counts but i have 2 friends who just graduated from trinity this year (2006) who are both doing residencies in canada. both guys from greater toronto area (oakville and richmond hill). one guy is doing family med at the university of alberta, and the other guy is doing anesthesia at memorial university of newfoundland.

a guy i did undergrad with at mcmaster is doing family medicine in ontario with the NOFM program via university of ottawa and he's based in sudbury. only downside (from my point of view) is he has signed a 5 year return to service contract. the two guys from trinity did not have to sign contracts.

further to my last post, none of these guys did any other post-grad training anywhere. they returned to canada immediately.

How will an Irish degree with a Canadian residency affect your job prospects in the US? Will you have to write the USMLEs go through residency in the States?

Just curious... Why would you do your residency in Canada if you wanted to work in the States anyways?

I'm sure most Canadians never imagined going to Ireland for medical school. Who knows where people will end up so it's best to have options.

One of their fellow Trinity kinsmen is in Queen's Family Medicine with me this year as well - I've mentioned this to him and he knows them well.

Out of interest, why did you delay applying for residency in Canada?

My Irish Classmate - we got engaged during our intern year, went to Brisbane, Australia to work in OBGYN for 2004-2005 (tertiary O&G - Mater Mother's Hospital) then got married (mid 2005).

The rate-determining step was the immigration process - my wife received her permanent residency late 2005 - then and only then we applied as we wanted to go together (as you know CaRMS requires you to be a PR or a citizen on application). Both of us got Queen's FM.

Wow! Congrats to you both!

Were you a trainee or sorts when you went to Australia—i'm wondering why you were able to work in a specialty without more than 1 year of PGME. Or are you able to be hired as anything with only a year of internship?

Both of us were PGY2 - over there, RMO or equivalent back in Ireland as SHO1. To go over as a doc, you have to be fully registered in your own (or actually any) country by the time you arrive. Thus, meaning in the Irish context, you have to be fully registered ("passed" your mandatory 1 year temporary registration in your internship). The spots as a foreign grad and temporary worker you'll receive are virtually any spots outside of downtown Sydney and Melbourne as they are classified as "area of need". The system is similar to that of the UK and Ireland - intern, RMO, PHO, registrar, consultant. You can canvas spots on your own or use a service to help you - more times than not, services are not as effective - if you know people that have gone over (and when in Ireland, you'll meet loads of docs who have been), talk to them and ask them for their AUssie hospital contacts and try to go that route.
