Does anyone have that that can repost it? I searched for it and found the thread but the link to it didn't work. I'm trying to decide between NSU and KCUMB... So if anyone has any input for that please share! 😀
 
Is that the secondary excel thing? I have it at home, I can PM it to you later today I think.
 
wow, thats a cool spreadsheet. I just used it quickly for NSU vs UMDNJ and got 17-15 Nova. wow.

I agree. It's different that Depakote's, which was a fine worksheet, but I like this guy's/gal's too.

Very nice spreadsheet! Make sure that you change the "weights" to your own preference and to make sure when you use the sum function that you include the gym. It isn't tabulated in its current state.

oh, good find. I have Nova +3 on the gym, lol. But you are right, I am going to add criteria and assign wights. Obviously tution is a little more important than the dress code for instance.

I'm just curious, what's with the colors on that thing? Were those added after the fact? Minor detail, but it sure makes the spreadsheet look pretty.
 
well I just did it exactly how it is in the attachment. But I have to personalize the categories and weights before it becomes meaningful.

I added a few categories, but can't figure out what the formulas mean in the 'adjusted' columns...!!

I think they are weights, from most important to least important. apparently gut reaction was most important to him, and gym the least. I am going to move gym up a little on my list for sure. Tuition is also going to move up.
 
Wow, that was fast! Thanks guys. It came back reeeaally lopside in favor of NSU but for some reason I'm still going crazy over this decision.

Orthodoc, I'm not sure which adjusted column you're asking about. I think the formulas in the "Adjusted DMU/KCUMB" categories make it so that points given to the school for whatever category is weighted according to how you rank each categories before it goes into the total score. For example DMU got 2 and KCUMB 0 for gut reaction. Since gut reaction was weighted heavily (4) then DMU gets 8 points towards the total score, or the weighting times the points. The "Adjustment" column is just weighting each category based on the 1, 2, 3, etc. ranking. I found it helpful to not always rank with whole numbers so some weightings were closer together.

lol, yes. And as helpful as I found it to be, I think you should give everyone a tutorial on this most handy-dandy tool. Did you ever expect to become The Man over something as dorky as a spreadsheet?? lol
 
Dep, How did you assign the multiplication factors? THey look so arbitrary but I know you must have had a system. Share your secrets! great spreadsheet though.
 
Disclaimer: this is subjective, the pre-entered values in the spreadsheet were my subjective opinions when visiting the schools, the order of the criteria is the order of importance I place them in. Make your own decisions, people. This is just a tool to help you.

That said...

First. Take the criteria and put them in the order most important to you. Add any that you need.

Then give the schools subjective grades. If one school did particularly well in that area, give the school positive number, if the school did particularly poorly give it a negative number. For me, the rankings are a bit relative in that I had been to both schools prior to filling out the form, and if both were exactly tied, I gave both 0's. However, if both did well in an area, I would give both positive numbers, b/c a good performance in one area could outweigh a poor performance in another (e.x. both had good medical mission opportunities but DMU got a better score, b/c I liked their's better and that point for KCUMB could counteract that I didn't like the area). The color coding was an after thought to make everything a little easier to understand.

Once you have the values totaled, use the sum function to total your raw score.

Now the spreadsheet should automatically calculate an adjusted score in the adjusted columns. This score is weighted by the value of the importance of each criteria (so curriculum is more important than gym and gets more weight in the adjusted score). The adjusted score will then be the one you want to look at if you are using this spreadsheet.

If you're making major changes, you'll want to check to be sure that you haven't thrown off any of the calculations.

Anyway, a lot of this was just gut reaction when assessing certain aspects of the schools. Go with what you think works... let me know if you have specific quesitons. Good luck.

Now for those that might have some use for it, attached is my latest spreadsheet that can be used as a template for a 3 school comparison, DMU v. KCUMB v. CCOM

The multiplication factor is not entirely arbitrary, but it's not totally scientific.

the formula is y=1/(.25x)

This gives you a decreasing multiplier that looks something like this:

I played with the values and this seemed to give a good decreasing scale across ~20 criteria. It gives good strong points to the most important criteria by heavilly weighting them and then levels off at the later criteria.
 
That is an awesome spreadsheet Depakote! I just looked at it and wanted to let you know that CCOM is building a brand new gym that will be ready in Feb. I'm in the Masters program there and on Student Council & the last we heard was Feb, but who knows when it will really be ready. It should be really nice from what I hear. If you or anyone else has a question about the CCOM campus pm me.

So if I added 2 rows, (and yes, I will assign my own priorities, don't worry!) - but do I use this same multiplier for every row? What does this do exactly?? 😕 It makes the strongest points have more weight? Wouldn't they have more weight just by being up higher on your list anyway? This is what I get for going to music school...

You multiply the value in the raw score colum by the value in the adjustment colum for each row, this generates your adjusted score. It should be set up to do this automatically, but since you've added to the list, you'll want to use excel's trend feature to continue the trends for both the "adjustment" column and use it to recalculate all your sums.

The points you give for the criteria higher on your list will have more value (so if you gave it all 1 point, it would be identical to the graph above), but since you're giving them different point values, the trend will be decreasing but it will not match the graph exactly.
