hey guys, just thought I'd start up a thread for all of us who were waitlisted, and holding onto our fannies waiting for some sort of movement soon! 🙂 It sounds like "sometime in June" is the magic phrase for any WL movement, but in the past, someone said people have been taken off late May, even.

Who's still waiting on BU?

Im still waiting on BU, although I have an acceptance I am quite content with. It would be a hard choice for me, I think ill worry about it if it happens 🙂.

Is it worth calling them and asking for any new updates, or will they give me the typical run around?

congrats on your acceptance! 🙂 where at, if you don't mind?

I emailed one of my old profs there back in early April, and it sounded like nothing I'd send would make any difference (decisions were already made). I don't know if that's a good thing or not, but I guess we'll just have to wait.

At this point, I'm trying not to fret too much. An acceptance sure will be nice, but a rejection isn't the end of the world either.

I'm waiting for BU's waitlist movement as well. I have an acceptance elsewhere too at which I'm holding a spot for the Fall. Curious, did you notify BU yet about your acceptance to your other school(s)? I was wondering what to do about that...

Hmm does that matter, was I suppose to inform BU?

Yeah, I was told to by some people. In case the school you're holding a seat at begins before BU begins, then they won't take you off the waitlist after a week before your classes begin at whatever school you're holding a seat at. So, if you begin classes on July 30, and BU begins on August 16, then you won't be considered anytime after July 23 or so... even though people can still potentially be taken off the list up until August 15...

I told Witzburg the other day about my acceptance elsewhere, just to be honest... but honestly, I'm hoping it doesn't convey that I'm any less interested or committed to going to BU...

the cruelty. 1 week is a bit harsh. 🙁

Who knows anymore. Im more curious to know if they expect any waitlist movement, and if there is one how significant it could be. Based on recent posts I thought the class was overfilled/filled, is this true? Are there any new updates regarding that?

Well, I know that the 180 or so spots are full. How overfilled it is... I don't know. So, I guess that's not really an answer, cuz it all depends on how overfilled it is to be able guage waitlist movement.

not sure about the current status. but i emailed my interviewer with this info around may 15th and was told it was too early as of yet to really know whether it was overfilled or not. maybe now that it's nearing the end of may, things have changed? I think Thayer might have more info?

is this recent info?

Im surprised there still full to be honest. I thought they made sure there would be decent waitlist movement this year after last years over acceptance.

Watch the waitlist movement at other schools. Once the waitlist activity at other schools pick up, its likely that BU will too.

My GMS advisor said the class is still full or overfilled and not to expect any waitlist movement until at least mid-june.

do you know if it's by a lot or a few?

Sigh, I'm on this waitlist too. I heard that there wont be much movement for a while. I wonder why was there THAT many more people who applied this year. BLAH!!!

Unfortunately, I haven't heard anymore info since I talked to an adcom member around May 15th. That person told me the class was still overfilled. From what Go Lance! says, it sounds like that may still be the case. It's possible that advisers don't have the most up to date info though. I know mine obtains info through the grape vine. It could take time for info to trickle down from the top.

I can't remember if I've already posted about this but the word on the street is that while the waitlist is not "ranked" it's already been "tiered" with waitlisters placed in 1 of 4 or 5 tiers. The top tier has the greatest chance of getting in off the waitlist. That's the case for GMS at least.

Oh and I must post a retraction. In another thread, someone posted their speculation that they tend to replace a withdrawing applicant with a similar applicant from the waitlist and I said that this was probably only true for GMS. I now believe I was incorrect. I have heard through word of mouth that in order to maintain diversity they do follow the like-for-like guideline to some degree. Hypothetical ex. URM with lots of shadowing clinical experience but little research background from Cali might be replaced with URM of maybe different race with some clinical experience from Cali. This isn't an actual real life example. The adcom may be less specific than my example...like a URM for a URM or non-trad for a non-trad, etc. I'm just using the example to clarify my explanation.

In my opinion, by saying that the list isn't "ranked" it gives them the leeway to hand pick people off the waitlist, regardless of tier. Any thoughts?

My advisor didn't give any specifics regarding the number of people still holding spots. They just said mid-June movement at the earliest. Sorry everyone, it looks like we may have a longer wait than anticipated ahead of us; just keep your fingers crossed for some serious movement!

I agree...there must be some kind of ranking/ordering system to keep everything functional. I can't imagine they debate every one of our applications each time there is waitlist movement.

My friend told me that his friend got off the waitlist at Boston. Soooooo I guess that means it moved today?

I don't know if you guys wanted to hear that... I still don't know how to feel about that. But, when I spoke with the admissions, she said it was completely unranked. So I'm not fully sure what to take of this conflicting information.

Good luck you guys! It'd be nice to classmates with you guys.

What do you guys do for fun?

oh crap, when did your friend's friend get off the WL? Today?

regular applicant or GMS?

Yesterday. I'm pretty sure she was a regular applicant.

thanks for the headsup. we appreciate it!!
I REALLY HOPE SOME (if not all) OF US GET IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOOD LUCK GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:luck::luck::luck::luck:

i dont know if this means anything, but out of my anxiety i decided to check my status. anyone get an error? maybe they're changing our status finally? maybe i'm just reading into things too much. 🙁

Mine isnt having an error, I was able to log in just fine.

seems like this info isn't true (or BU's telling a different story). There "hasn't been any movement in the waitlist" and won't be until mid-June, folks. Just wanted to confirm this info, for anyone who wanted to know.

thanks sendwich

I was a bit skeptical after conversations with my GMS advisor and others involved with admissions. Thanks for the confimation.

i'm pretty sure the waitlist is ranked, although it's mostly hearsay.

Do you guys think there will be any movement?

i think they have us ranked in groups (ie group 1, 2, etc) but they're probably more flexible on who gets off the list when (ie white male from the west with lots of clinical to replace white male from the west with lots of clinical).

on movement: i dont think there will be too much movement this year.
"We do not expect any movement until middle of June, if any. There is no way of knowing whether it will be a few people who come of the waitlist or many people." just quoting from what the admissions office people told me. maybe i'm being a tad pesimisstic, but this really doesn't sound too great. 🙁 Boo on you BU!!!!

Amen to that. Seriously, BU. Seriously.

Hi everyone

I too have been waitlisted at BU, which is basically my only shot at medical school this year. I keep visiting this thread hoping to see someone post that they have been taken off the waitlist, but I guess we have at least several more weeks of waiting left 🙁. Does anyone know, what’s the protocol about applying to medical schools while on the waitlist? If I don’t get in this year, I am definitely applying for 2008. Should I just submit my AMCAS as soon as possible or should I wait until I definitely hear from BU? Will it affect my chances to get in this year if I go on and submit my application for 2008 right now?
I appreciate any thoughts anyone may have about this.

Good luck everyone!

Hi Lisa, I don't think applying for 2008 will affect your chances of getting in this year. It sounds like BU might start doing the WL thing sometime mid-June, but since they didn't give a specific date, it's hard to say exactly when we're going to get anything definite at all. If money isn't an issue, I'd say go ahead and get that application in as soon as possible.

Another possibiliy is, try and email your interviewer and see if they can tell you anything about which tier/group you're in. I'm not sure if it's information that's open to us, but if you explain your situation, your interviewer might be understanding. If you're feeling extra bold, why don't you shoot Dr. Witzburg a call or email? It can't hurt, right? Investing $$ for primaries (to say the least) is pretty expensive, and you don't want to shell out the bucks if you don't have to. (shrug) I'd love to get off the WL as well, but it's not looking too bright (or maybe they're downplaying us?).

My friend's undergrad health advisor just talked to Dean Witzburg on his behalf. Dr. Witzburg has said that there has been no movement and the class is holding strong, but he still does expect movement in the upcoming 4-5 weeks.

Also, my friend's last semester grades were rather strong, and he said that those grades would help his case for getting off the waitlist....so there must still be some mobility.

Good luck everyone.

hey all - I was holding an acceptance to BU, but have withdrawan to attend a SUNY instead due to an INSANE difference in tuition cost.

thanks for letting us know!!!! 🙂

Is anyone sending anything to the admissions office (i.e. letter of intent, emails to Dr Witzburg etc.) I'm not sure what to do but seems like people are under the impression that nothing I do will help at this point. What do you all think?

Good question, I want to know if I can do anything that would help....

Just withdrew from BU. Good luck, guys; I hope one of you gets the spot!

(And if you want to compensate me for that fat $500 deposit I lost, well, you may feel free to do so 😉)

Thanks for the update. Sorry about your 500$ and g/l wherever you end up for med school:luck:.

it sounds like they're definitely going to start taking people off the WL "soon". Who knows exactly how "soon"? maybe the next couple weeks?

sendwich,

Is the "soon" news from BU directly?

A physician that I work with mentioned that approximately 8 Waitlist acceptances were sent out late last week via snail mail - it is unknown whether these acceptances were GMS, general applicants or from both pools.

Interestingly, I just phoned admissions and they mentioned that there has NOT been any Waitlist movement. When I asked if they anticipate any Waitlist movement she mentioned that they were not sure.

Anyone have any idea how big this wait list is?
