BU - June Waitlist movement

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello all, a fellow anxious BU Waitlist applicant here. After reading the last previous posts, I'm wondering who the sources of this information regarding waitlist movement actually are. So far, BU hasn't responded with any comforting information, to me at least, regarding any waitlist movement at all. Also, if in fact BU sent any acceptances in the mail, presumably the applicants' status on the website should reflect this. At any rate, if anyone has any credible information, it would greatly appreciated.

I think that when the waitlist actually starts to move, then the admissions office will be open about it. Otherwise, it is probably just rumor.

sendwich,

Is the "soon" news from BU directly?

yes, directly from one of the adcomms.

A physician that I work with mentioned that approximately 8 Waitlist acceptances were sent out late last week via snail mail - it is unknown whether these acceptances were GMS, general applicants or from both pools.

Interestingly, I just phoned admissions and they mentioned that there has NOT been any Waitlist movement. When I asked if they anticipate any Waitlist movement she mentioned that they were not sure.

what is up with this contradiction?I think the physician you spoke to may have the wrong info. Highly unlikely, I think. I heard back about the "soon the WL will move" from someone late last week. It sounded like they were going to meet up with the rest of the committee within the next few weeks to decide. Maybe the physician wanted to see you squirm??

Anyone have any idea how big this wait list is?

*This list has not been updated with those applicants that have withdrawn.

Perhaps you are right sendwich --although it would be atypical of his behaviour -- maybe he was mistaken after all - but as I mentioned in the first post, this was only speculation and was not to be taken as fact!

I agree with you completely. In fact, BU still seems uncertain whether there will be any WL movement at all... I just wanted to keep you all posted on what I had heard - no mal intent here!

hey springhurst! no worries! I was just trying to come up with an explaination to explain how that could have possibly happened. Sorry if I offended you in any way!! I may have come off a bit naily but this waiting process hasn't been too cute either! 🙂

No offense taken! And I agree w/ you 100% - I wish they would just accept us already!

Email today from admissions office:

There has not been any movement on the waitlist. If there is any movement it will be in the next couple of weeks.

Goodluck to you all!

I guess the WL is 44 with rbel.

ugh...I think I'm giving up on BU. It's the 13th of June and there hasn't been any movement so far with the class still likely full or overfilled.

They did tell us in advance though that there wasn't going to be movement till mid to late June in the email informing us about the wait list, so maybe there are openings and they just have to meet and decide.

someone in the BU allopathic class threads posted about getting off the waitlist but it sounded like it was a special case? he or she was someone from a linkage-postbac program. don't know if that means the WL will start moving soon, or if it a one time deal.

Hi Everyone,

I just got a phone call from BU yesterday -- I was accepted through a linkage with my post-bac program! 🙂 I'm excited to meet everyone -- I live in the area so if anyone has any questions about Boston, feel free to message me.

This was posted on the BUSM class of 2011 thread. Whats up w/this?

I spoke with admissions yesterday, and they said the class is still full. There hasn't been any movement on the waitlist.

BUSM has several pathways for admission. My guess is that it is separate from our situation.

I wonder why there are so many conflicting infos..first, with the physican saying "8 people" were admitted off the wl, now this?
BU needs to hurry up and get this (aka us) straightened out! I'm with you Thayer, I'm starting to lose out on hope!

For all the GMS peeps waiting to hear back, it would be a good idea to find out how many former GMS people sent in their intention to register. BU will have to make sure that their "quota" of GMS students is comparable to previous years, so that information will be useful to gauge the chances of getting in off the waitlist. If in fact most plan to register, then chances of getting in are slimmer. But since it seems that many have dropped, this could be good. Otherwise, there is always next year.

there's no way of knowing this unless you get this directly from the horse's mouth. anyone???

When I spoke to someone on the committee shortly after May 15th, I was told that the number of GMS students intending to matriculate was below the quota. Meaning, a lot of GMS kids chose not to attend BU and chose to go elsewhere. According to this individual, this will be helpful for GMS students on the waitlist. The quota is set to 30 +/- 5. I believe it is supposed to be on the higher end this year to compensate for last year's disaster.

If it was short of the quota around May 15th, and there has been no waitlist movement ( and possibly even more GMS withdrawals since then) then I think it's reasonable to conclude that BU is still short of their GMS quota.

Lets hope you are right!!!

The person that was accepted through a post-bac linkage program was accepted through a new linkage BUSM has with Tufts, they only accepted 3 people from that program this year. I agree that this is completely separate from the waitlist, so don't worry guys! 🙂

Who are you FrVerona? You sound HOT!

Considering the fact that today is the 18th, which I believe is when they said they would turn to the waitlist, I figure if we dont hear within this week it can be said there will be no movement.

hey DrCurious, where did you hear this info? was it sent out to all those waitlisted?

i really hope to see some sort of movement this week. i may hold out until the end of this month (at the latest) and move onto another school 🙁

hi all,
I dont know if this is helpful at all. I got a phone call last week from BU. The message just said they wanted to see if I was still interested. I called back and withdrew my application. If my answer had been different, I don't know if they were going to offer me a position.
Did anyone else get this call? Maybe they're just trying to trim down their waitlist? Or maybe it's a sign of waitlist movement?

Good luck to everyone still waiting.

In the waitlist email I got way back in March the letter says the following:

"Most waiting list decisions are made between June 1st and July 31st, but the list remains active until the end of August."

So if we don't hear back in the next week or two I still wouldn't give up. Its just a waiting game at this point. I'm especially even more hopeful since no one on this forum has heard of any movement on the waitlist. I am assuming some WL has to happen since they seemed to underaccept and there has been many withdrawals. Perhaps the Adcom needs to meet. 😎

I wish BU would be more transparent with WL actions / standings. Reading WL threads for other institutions it seems that the adcom is more candid in their feedback, thus allowing candidates to be more pragmatic about their chances.

Feeling helpless is not a great feeling. 🙁

I'm right with you on this one, Righty. 👍 It's a bit unjust, this whole process. Being (unnecessarily?) secretive (don't know if that's the right word) makes things so much more difficult. 🙁

hey guys, i just emailed the admissions office and apparently, they WL has been slowly moving. the committee will review folders again when more seats open up.

boo. i'm going to take this as "the class is full at this point and there isn't any room for you, buddy". it's already approaching end of june...how many more seats can possibly open up? (not much at this point, i think)

Hmm...I sent an email to the adcom two days ago and got no response. And did they hint whether they expect alot more movement or are they just waiting on more spots to clear?

no hints. their response was just the one liner i posted. doesn't look to hopeful 🙁

I confirmed this with a call to admissions. She said the list has only been just creeping.

I called as well and got the same response. Once I hung up the phone I realized that I never asked how many students were taken off so far, and if they contact students via email or phone call.

Well, it certainly sucks that it seems there is so little WL movement. As far as the secrecy goes, I was told by my advisor that's how Dr. Witzburg wants it done. I also confirmed that there is a separate WL for GMS students. But it seems like since there is no fixed number of GMSers that they take, that even if some withdraw it doesn't mean they will necessarily refill those spots with GMSers on the WL. So basically, I don't know what to think, but i'm not very optimistic at this point.

i just called admissions, if you get contacted about the waitlist it will be by phone. How many people do you think are still on the waitlist?

Well I don't know about the general waitlist, but someone had said in a previous thread that there were approx 32 GMS students. I have heard (unconfirmed) that at least 5 GMSers that were accepted either had withdrawn or were going to. I don't know if any from the WL have withrawn. Do any other GMS people have any info on how many might be going elsewhere?

 If the WL has moved then i feel really sad right now. It is the end of June and I am not sure how many more people are going to withdraw at this point. Do you know if they are waiting to re-review applicants or is it just that these are the spots that have opend up.

Hang in there guys - things will work out - have some faith!!

What have people been doing to update their applications? Sending letters, emails, using contacts, candy and flowers etc...?

I sent another letter of rec (from my thesis advisor) and a letter of intent, but honestly, I don't think it makes a difference at this point.

Found out of one GMS student I know that's been accepted off the waitlist. He got the call earlier in the week.

WHEN YOU GET OFF THE WAITLIST👍....THIS MAY INTEREST YOU!!!

If anyone is looking to furnish there place...we have 2 large desks, 2 full size beds, a 3 person couch, 2 person couch, 2 bookshelves (5 shelves each), 2 oversized sofa chairs, one ottoman, a 3 table set of coffee tables, a large floorstanding fan w/ ionizer filter, 2 full length mirrors, 4 lamps, kitchenware, etc.

pretty much we have a furnished apartment of two people that we are looking to get rid of ASAP.

We have pictures...so please e-mail if interested. We are GMS students living across the street from school at Harrison Court. Prices are negotiable abd EXTREMELY REASONABLE b/c we are leaving Boston and more concerned about applying to medical school than selling furniture.

I wish I could have had an opportunity like this because we had to go all over town w/ a U-haul to buy this stuff, and you have to opportunity to rent from the Uhaul down the street, run it over to your own apartment, and be done with moving in....all in less than a couple hours.

There is an elevator in the building so it easy to move.

drop me an e-mail: [email protected]

THANKS

Sounds like at least one GMSer has been rescued from the wait list... does anyone know of any other GMS applicants that have made it off the list as well?

If so, we probably have to assume that all the available GMS spots have been offered and we are now waiting for those newly offered students to accept or withdraw. At this point in the process, multiple withdrawals don't seem too likely... my BU chances appear to be getting slimmer 🙁.

(Apologies to Springhurst for my waning faith.)

don't konw about most of you guys, but it's getting late. i dont think i can wait too much longer for BU...if nothing happens by the end of the week, I'm heading off to my 2nd choice school.

I'm feeling much the same way... I'll withdraw from the BU waitlist, and prepare to move to my second choice, if I don't hear back by the first week of July.

Hi, does anyone know if the GMS student who got in is from the class of 07 or from a previous class? I'm with you guys. I'm starting to make my plans to head out to Michigan for school instead. Where are you guys headed off to?

The GMS student who was taken was from the class that started in Fall '05.
