PLEASE TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK OF THIS!

Well I got the DAT done on Wednesday, and man do I feel like a load of stress has been taken off my shoulders. Here are my scores so all of you can rip me apart and let me know how you feel.

BIO-19
GCHEM-22
OCHEM-21
TS-20
RC-19
QR-15
AA-19
PAT-22

I feel like the scores are pretty solid and consistent, no real extremes except for Math. Here are my thoughts on each section.

BIO-FREAK! I never saw a practice test like this in my life. I expected a ton of stuff on Glycolysis and Cell Biology, embryology etc., but it seemes like there was nothing like that! I am glad I just took a Medical Physiology class and had a tough teacher that tested us on a lot of conceptual stuff. It seemed like this Bio test was a lot of application.

GEN CHEM-I thought this was TONS easier than a lot of my practice tests. I was worried this would be my worst section since I hadn't taken gen chem for over 2 years. I thought there wouldn't be a lot of calculation problems based on what everyone on SDN had said, unfortunately I got more than I expected... probably 4-5 questions.

OCHEM-I thought this was a little harder than Top score and any kaplan test I had taken. I saw a lot of Wordy questions rather than reaction mechanisms. Overall I think it was still a pretty easy section. I love chemistry...

PAT-I thought that all the topscore and kaplan practice tests prepared me well for this. The real pat seemed easy compared to what I expected. Angle ranking was simple. I expected the pattern folding to be outrageous with all sorts of complicated lines/dots/colors on the patterns, but it seemed like it was just blank white paper and simple folds. The cube counting was easy as heck, free points because of kaplan and barron's methods. Hole punching was a breeze, nothing to hard. The key holes were similar to topscore... The front end side and top end one was my hardest, I should have taken more time. Also I saw a keyhole question that had the exact same answer twice! I couldn't see any difference, I swear the test maker screwed up! I don't know if any else saw something like that but it was wack.

RC-I thought kaplans method sucked, who has time to read the whole passage especially when its 28 paragraphs long AND make a stupid road map!! My first passage was huge! I am definetly glad that I didn't fall into that time trap, I just looked at the question and found the answer and I had extra time at the end to check a lot of extras. My advice is to read only when trying to find the answer, your mind can make its own road map as you go through the questions and then realize what the paper is about and where the information is found.

QR-I sucked it up here, I thought I had bombed the test by this point and felt like giving up! I honestly thought I would walk out with a 15 AA and I had extra time but really didn't care, my brain was dead. Turns out I should stuck to it and actually put my heart into it! Lots of wordy questions.

My last thought are that I am greatful for answered prayers and a merciful God. There is no way I could have done it if it were not for him. As one of my teachers said, "Pray like it depends on the Lord, but work like it depends all on you and it will all be good."

LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK

The passages were really 28 paragraphs long? You are kidding right?

I am not kidding one of them was freaking long! The other two were a little more simple. I think it is a time trap, you know if you get caught up in the first one and then forget about time you wont do well on the next two. Good thing I learned to watch the clock and take 20 mins on each passage.

how many word problems were there 7-8? I usually skip them and do them at the end. I usually will get 3/4 of them right and get a good score on that section; however i don't know if i would do well if half of that section were word problems.

shoeler,
great scores man I would take them any day of the week! can you elaborate on the bio sec a little and how do you mean it wasnt like any practice test that you have seen? were the ?'s not straightforward?
good job!

Donsaxena,
You know I can't recall how many, but my overall impression was that there were more than I expected. I probably came out ok on those but slipped up on other stuff.

Let me say this to you though, I did all the topscore tests, all the high yield books tests, all of the kaplan practice tests, and the ADA full length tests, not just once but several times. I felt like I was going to be ok. I would get 21-22 on the bio sections but man the real thing was wierd.

I feel like it was more conceptual or application type questions... you know like what can we conclude from a succesful cloning of a dog? I think I was used to the more clear cut questions like how many atp are released from substrate level phosphorylation? Or bile is synthesized in.... Don't get me wrong there were a few of those questions that popped up on the test but they were worded a little tricky so as to trip you up if you hurried through them. Kaplan teaches you to STOP and THINK then answer the question in your mind and check to see if your answer matches the question right one...

I would definetly stay up on your physiology, have the hormones down, which comes from the pit gland (ant and post pit). I don't think the eye anatamoy or ear anatamoy is too imporatant. Spend a few hours on the kindgom and phylum stuff for classification once a week and hit that hard on the day of the test since its easy to forget...

Nice scores...

With regards to the bio section, how detailed were your genetics questions? Did you get any questions like "what is the probability that a male and female carrier of a recessive disease have three kids all with normal phenotype"? Also how much did the Kaplan book prepare you for the biology section?

are the classification stuff easier/harder than topscore?

congrats. scores look good, but math brought down your AA.. also, whats your gpa

did you get any weird animal names and asked to identify their characteristics?

I was wondering if you knew of any good techniques to study for the bio part especially since you were saying it was a lot different. I dont know what to study if it doesn't ask for the basic stuff...

For the RC questions, would you say most for factual based or the inference based type? And, that 1st passage seems crazy long. Seriously 28 paragraphs? That's ~equivalent to two passages.

Gentics questions are always really simple and easy.. You know things like a color blind man and carrier woman mate, whats the chances of having a son or daughter that is also colorblind. You know what I mean?!

Thanks, I am happy to be done. Classification stuff is easier than topscore. Although went over all the classification stuff right before I took the test.

My GPA is a 3.72 cum and 3.63 science

What do you mean by wierd animal names? Classification questions are usually straight foward you know, a few charactaristics about some kingdom or a specific species and then you have to identify it..

I would for sure still take all the practice tests, that will help make sure your foundation is good. Like I mentioned before I think it is mostly a conceptual thing so its almost like you have to have the gift for it or a lot of good practice from tests in school. I would suggest that you make sure your BIO background is solid. Maybe you don't have to worry about the ity bity details.

Yeah the RC section seemed like it was all details or inferred details. It was pretty nice to be able to just find the detail in the passage and answer the best your could. Yeah 28 paragraphs.... not kidding its a time trap man. Be careful not to waste all your time with it.

With this GPA you will get in don't worry. Could you suggest me what should I focus on when studying for bio. I took the exam 2 months ago and I got a 16 on bio. I want to retake the exam just b/c of bio and math. How should i study for bio?

could u please answer my question.

Sorry, I have been out of town. I would say read what I have responded to everyone else about that. I feel that the physiology was the biggest part for me, I just got done with an advanced physiology class and that really helped me. If I were to take it again I would do the same thing, I would prep with the same ol' kaplan book, use high yield, and just really review everything again....

Good luck
