I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I'd be willing to offer a free night of lodging for cash-strapped medical school interviewees. Perhaps others would also offer their couch to a fellow applicant. Hence this thread. My idea is simply couch-sharing. Anything beyond that is up to the individual. (I'd probably offer breakfast and a ride to the school, but that's just me.)

I'm in Chicago, minutes from Northwestern, U of C, Rush, and Loyola. People can PM me and request a night on my futon for their interview, if they're looking to cut costs a little. Of course we're working on the honor system (don't steal my porn-- I mean my medical journals, don't overstay your welcome, etc.) here, but I've got the feeling that there's a lot of goodwill out there yet to be tapped. Perhaps some of the existing allo students wouldn't mind opening up their living rooms.

Also remember that guests who are less than gracious [or pleasant], will be flamed to no end - so no one else has to endure your particular flavor of insanity.

Thoughts?

I think this is a really nice offer! Do you happen to know which schools offer student hosts? And is that free?

Thanks for the thread. I'm surprised this isn't an SDN tradition already. Hopefully I'll get interview offers so I can actually take advantage of this.

Haha, I was gonna do that last year on our Canuck forum, but then I ended up moving to Horse's Ass, 2.5 hours away from the med school, so it didn't make much sense to do it anymore.

But I'll be glad to crash at an SDNer's house this coming fall/winter/spring for any US interviews that may come up!

P.S. I used to model. :hardy:

As a fellow Canuck [I was born in Toronto], you're welcome here. Best of luck!

We'll have to keep this thread bumped so it's relevant when interviews start coming up in August/Septemberish.

No problem. I was surprised it hadn't been done recently. The mods should make this a sticky so us poor SDN'ers can network to save a few dollars.

Wow, imagine if you stay with an SDNer of opposite sex (or same sex, depending on which floats your boat), you have one too many to drink, and accidentally commit SDN-cest... :hardy:

Please, feel free to stay at my house when you have an interview here....but I only have one bed!:hardy:

OooOoo thanks!

But where are you going to sle--oh. This is awkward...

Edit: you joined a month after me and you have 10x as many posts?

Double edit: I'm done thread hijacking now

OooOoo thanks!

It's only as awkward as you make it, baby!

jochi, jochi, jochi...

I want to... really, I do. But where would I put it on my app? I don't do anything that I can't list.

This is a great idea and a wonderful way to show how collegial SDNers are.

If it gets off the ground, we can make a special area on SDN for it.

Well, that'd be great. How's about, to start, everyone just add their screen name to the list with a general idea what city/schools you are near. I'll start:

zipmedic
(Chicago) Northwestern, University of Chicago, Rush, Loyola

As an after thought...SDNers will have to use their own discretion as to the trustworthiness of our users.

SDN offers no guarantees of safety, etc. Perhaps for those offering accomodations we could offer some sort of verification of status (ie, if you are a current med student or resident, sending us your school email). SDN Admins need to think about this or SDNers can "use at your own risk". We do have some unusual characters here.

I guess if it becomes "official" then we can use some verification process like we do with mentors.

Anyway, post away...

zipmedic: (Chicago) Northwestern, University of Chicago, Rush, Loyola
phoenix1: (Chicago) Northwestern, UofC, Rush, UIC, Loyola (I live 12 blocks due west of Northwestern)

In addition, this would be a great way to get fresh interview "reviews/tips" straight from the source from people who have just interviewed at your local schools.

I am minutes from EVMS in Virginia Beach and have a guest room if anyone would like to stay! Just PM me! This is a really great idea...the cost of plane tickets alone is overwhelming!! :)

I live minutes from UCI and can provide a couch and some breakfast, the rest is up to you.

I will be living in LA in the fall - in Westwood village which is minutes from UCLA. Good if you're applying to UC Irvine, USC, UCLA etc. Hopefully (!) I'll need a place to stay (one night in each city) in Atlanta, Houston, Boston, San Diego, San Francisco, Baltimore and St. Louis. This thread rocks - PM me or email me ([email protected]) if you're interested in Hollywood!

Do you guys want to include gender, or does that not matter?

I've been updating the list on the first post - we mention gender. Perhaps, by convention, I should just repost the latest list here at the bottom in the future.

Thanks!

I live in Philadelphia (on Penn's campus)...not far from Jefferson or Temple.

I'm down if you need a place to stay.

Ahhh...yes I see. I would agree that most posters who are familiar with the thread would probably look at the last post first, but new users may be confused with the list being in the first post.

Wow, this reminds me of couchsurfing so much.

Alright, I live in Boston, so I'm near Harvard, Tufts, and BU. Anyone interviewing at those schools is welcome to crash on my couch. In addition to the couch, I've got two air matresses (twin), and I have spare sheets.

Search for GROUPIEGUPPIE on couchsurfing.com. They have a verification system that's in place to protect travelers. This says that I exist according to my credit information.

Great, thanks for making your place available!

Ladies, Zipmedic will make you swoon...:hardy:

I am about an hour drive from both Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) and Medical College of Virginia (MCV). Anyone is more than welcomed to crash here for the night and help yourself to the kitchen.

I'll be in Houston, and I'm willing to house interviewees for UT Houston and Baylor, though I didn't apply or interview at Baylor, so I won't be much help for advice. (I do have friends that go to and interviewed at Baylor so they could be of help).

Awesome, glad to see this is picking up some steam! By the time interview season starts, we should have a pretty good list!

I'm down for interviewees. I be living on campus at Sinai in the fall (if I can get this housing crap together) and can offer a couch assuming my aptmates are ok with it. Sinai is also a 20 min train ride from NYU med if that is a consideration.

Zipmedic,

I just wanted to let you know that you are freaking amazing and my hero, haha. Thank you for your altruism, compassion, and thoughtfulness.

Touching. What did I do to deserve such love from a fourth-poster?
