I've seen several rumors and myths in this forum about the In-Service exam, so let's make a FAQ.
For Allopathic residents:
Thanks,
Jayne.
For Allopathic residents:
American College of Physicians in conjunction with the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM) and the Association of Professors of Medicine (APM)is the entity which writes the IM ITE. They are also the company which publishes the MKSAP. Please read the link entitled American College of Physicians, as it has an excellent FAQ regarding the ITE exam.
The 2007 ITE will be administered Oct. 12 to Oct. 20, 2007
The Allopathic In-Service exam is written by ABIM. The ABIM is the society which produces and administers the IM board which you take after completing residency. They are, however, a sub-set of the ACP.
It is rumored that the ITE is used in the application process for fellowships, this however is not allowed according to the APDIM. "The IM-ITE Steering Committee has written to subspecialty program directors to remind them that the IM-ITE results are not to be used as part of the fellowship selection process and that the results should not be requested from either the applicants or from their program directors"
For Osteopathic IM residents: The 2007 ITE will be administered Oct. 12 to Oct. 20, 2007

The test is written and administered by the American College of Osteopathic Internists (good luck finding any information on their website pertaining to the test) The test is generally administered early March. the ACOI does appear to be either the same organization or a sister organization to the AOBIM which administers the Board exam after residency.
For questions on how to prepare for board review:
how much do you study as a resident?
Internal Medicine In Training Exam
is medstudy/mksap/uptoda sufficient or IM residency? (i.e. won't read harrisons)
MKSAP v. Medstudy (sorry to bring it up again)
which study material for internal medicine boards
How do you prepare for Medicine Boards?
Please send any corrections or additional info to my via a private messageInternal Medicine In Training Exam
