Good thing about those schools, despite what the group may be suggesting, is that your patient case load will really be high. There are only 2 residency programs at Meharry, per se, and since you will be trained to do perio, ortho, prostho, etc. much of that patient load will go to you versus the resident. You will learn by doing versus learning by watching at say UPENN or UMICHIGAN.. Pick your battle...!!!! Howard has a few more program specialties so... As far as the minority pool, I know this may be harsh but WHO CARES???? Go for the training and experience. If we all lived in a perfect world where only the people around you look like you then we might as well take our family and move to Mars. But actually our culture and our people gives us strength! Honestly it is a legitimate concern, but balance that thought with access and training. Life is all about diversity. Meharry definitely has diversity (yes it is going to be more African American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian, maybe the least). Just know that minorities mentioned want the same thing you want. Who would waste there time to take the DAT, apply, go to interviews, for nothing. Everyone at those accredited schools want to be dentist too... And if that bothers you, go where you are comfortable, but just know everyone is not going to be like you or have your same beliefs wherever you decide to be.... Best of blessings!
