At CCOM, how does one get a research opportunity? When does one usually do this research at CCOM? What should I do if CCOM doesn't have staff researching something related to a specialty that I would like to go into (Example: ENT)? Is it possible to get published or get some kind of research credit without having to spend an extra year or more at CCOM?

lol. why would you want to do research at CCOM if there are so many excellent research facilities in Chicago?

I wasn't aware that other research facilities in Chicago readily accept CCOM students with very specific research interests for a summer research experience. From what some of my pals at allopathic programs tell me, getting specific research in a field like ENT is really competitive at their own universities. So I think that getting the hookup through your own university would be ideal. I'm trying to find out if CCOM has such a program in connection with other schools.

Hi,
There are a wide variety of research projects going on at MWU. Here is a link to last summer's work. (Mostly basic science since we dont have a hospital next door)

These projects were completed during the CCOM summer research program. Last year there were about 22 students funded for the summer. A lot of other students choose to do research in programs at other schools. (I would try this if you are interested in ENT - yes they are competitive) Extramural research programs are listed here:

Midwestern definitely has links to other schools as well as pharmaceutical companies. For example, the head of the biochemistry department is associated with Northwestern University. He does human embryonic stem cell research and they actually grow and study them at Midwestern. The student that worked in his lab last summer split his time between Northwestern and Midwestern University.
Another professor has connections with Abbott Labs

Midwestern obviously doesnt have the facilities that a large academic research school would have, however, it does have the luxury of having multiple degree programs (PT, PA, PharmD, OT, PsyD and BMS and Dentistry coming soon). This means that there are a lot more faculty than other DO schools that just have a couple of programs offered (more lab space and projects).

One more thing. MWU is building a brand new basic science building that will be completed in 2010, so if you are thinking of applying next year it should be ready by the summer of your MSI year. This means new labs!

Does anyone ever get quality research time in during the school year? I noticed that in the spring term of MSI there is a research elective.

The research elective is used by students in the spring to prepare for the summer. Some continue to work on their projects the 2nd year, but you have to remember that there is minimal time to accomplish things during the school year. CCOM has a very intense schedule.

What about students who are on a military scholarship? If they want to do research but have the officer training course in the summer after their MSI year how do they get research experience? Are there other chances for students to get research experience other than the summer after MSI?

There are year-off programs like HHMI and Doris Duke (also posted in the link above) that you can do. These are not at Midwestern, but they are available for all medical students. I am not sure if the military will let you do one. You will have to talk with them about it. If you are that interested in research maybe you should forgo the military scholarship because that kind of commitment means would mean you are planning on academic medicine after you graduate.

There is just not enough time at any medical school to do anything significant during the school year. You will be much busier that you can imagine right now.
