Hi.. Im new to the board. I have been doing lots of research on Pharmacy lately since I decided to take Pre-Pharm courses and start Aug 17. I am pretty excited! I have been doing a lot of reading over you guys posts lately and seems like its a really stressful time since you have to maintain a certain GPA to get into Pharm school. I have not really went over any of that with my school yet. I am doing Pre Pharmacy at a junior college then transferring to a University since the junior college only offeres so much. What gpa while taking pre pharm do I have to maintain to get into actual pharmacy? Any tips or advice? Im excited and really nervous all at the same time!! I did pretty well in High School with studying and all that. I just was not as dedicated in HS as I wish I would of been. I played sports and was more worried about going out and chasing girls haha.. Well now that Im older(21 and 22 in Dec) and matured up I see things totally different! I just hope Ill do fine in pre pharm. I'm really anxious and going to be dedicated as much as I can!! Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!!

1. The same study techniques you've used in high school may not work for college, so don't be surprised if you don't get the same results as in high school.

2. Most schools require at least a 2.8 GPA. I think a 3.5 is a safe bet to be competitive for admission. The PCAT score will be another big factor in admissions.

3. From what I heard, as long as you pass your classes and your licensing exam, you'll be fine.

4. Get some pharmacy experience and extra-cirriculars under your belt. You don't need to have a leadership position in every club on campus, but one or two would be nice. The ECs you have don't have to be completely pharmacy related, so have some fun and join an IM team or something.

5. Have fun in undergrad.

The biggest thing about pharmacy school isn't so much just passing, but understanding the material the most you can. It is going to be the info that you use to help people with their medications so you don't want to be giving advice on shaky learning. That being said, if you understand things and there is a bell curve, just worry about passing and if you want to be Rho Chi, go for the A's.

Well thanks for the advice!! I'm def pretty excited about it all! I know its going to be stressful and a pain sometimes but if it was easy, everyone would be doing it right!! Its so weird because the more and more I keep thinking about it being really tough and hard the more Im eager to get after it! Well I will be def keeping this forum saved now since Ill be in pre pharm so if I need help hopefully I can turn to you guys and gals!

Lol at enrolling in pre-pharmacy school. I don't know about any of you guys, but I was never a pre-pharmacy school student and did not even know pre-pharmacy school existed . To the original poster, there is a difference...you will be focused on a pre-pharmacy track in that you will be taking courses required for pharmacy school. But there is no college or university that is an institution of pre-pharmacy specifically. No 2 or 4-year school will grant you an associate of arts or BA/BS degree in pre-pharmacy. So, you will not have the option to select pre-pharmacy as a major.Schools will only offer the course work necessary to progress to pharmacy schools. I hope this settles any confusion.

Yes I understand that. I guess I just worded it wrong or explained it wrong. I fixed it. Sorry.. So with that being said. Im going to take pre pharmacy courses at a junior college. Since thats only a junior college, Ill have to transfer to a University that does pharmacy correct?

Well if you can take all of your prerequisites at you junior college, then you won't have to transfer to a 4 year university and can instead apply directly to pharmacy school (you can't transfer to a pharmacy school...it's an application process)

Guess I need to talk to my counselor at my junior college and see what all they offer.. Any certian questions I should ask? This is my first time to college so I don't know exactly how it all works. I should see if they have all the required prerequisites to move on to pharmacy school? Don't know if you guys want to look. But heres my local junior college Im going to. Its a academic program. They just call if pharmacy. Have not started yet so not sure what to expect..

I would definitely ask if they know about pre-pharmacy track. You don't want someone giving you advice on classes when they don't know what they are doing. You need to look into which schools you want to apply to and get their pre-req lists beforehand and go off of them for which classes to take. You need to make sure they are compatible with what you will be taking otherwise you'll waste time and money. You're going to most likely take two sciences and a math each semester if not more to get the pre-reqs done in two years for most schools.

So pretty much I need to find out exactly what all the program at my junior college consists of and then find out where Im actually going to go to pharmacy school at and see what prereqs they require to even get into junior college?

1. figure out what pharmd program you want to apply to.
2. take and print out pre-req's required for that program
3. go to your jc/cc counselor with pre-req list
4. plan your 2 years according to the pre-req of that school and availability of classes offered.

When you say what pharmd program you mean like what pharmacy school right?

Well I guess first thing is I need to find out exactly what the pharmacy program at my junior college consists of and then find all the school that do pharmacy school that I would like to attend.

Welcome! If you search the forums there is a ton of information here to help you. My best advice would be to take school seriously from the beginning and you'll avoid a big headache when the time comes to apply to pharmacy school. Check out the sticky for a good place to start.
