Does anybody have the statistics for how many applicants they get and how many interviews they give? Thanks!

I don't know any specifics about applications and interviews. I do work at the clinic though. If you do get a chance to go to the medical school at UW, I'm sure you would really enjoy it.

You use to be able to take anatomy during the summer before the fall semester, but I think they moved it to the spring semester now. They recently changed the order of classes. I use the Ebling library for my research associate job and I really like their library. It isn't the best library I've been to, but it is still a very good place to study and they have subscriptions to most major journals.

A couple of years ago most rotations were done state wide. I'm not sure exactly how the 3rd year rotations are done this year.

As far as the applications go, they accept more in state applicants.

There are a couple of MS1's that at the UW-Medical School that spend time on SDN. Try searching for the last class thread.

I'm in M2, and I am peripherally involved in the admission's process (I don't have a say in it, but I do help coordinate stuff) so I have some information. They get about 550-600 instate applications from which they will accept at least 130 (80-85% of the class are in-staters). While the in state acceptance rate has been relatively unchanged from previous years, they have been interviewing LESS applicants for the past two years(roughly 170-200 instate applicants will get interviewed and 300 out of state applicants). As for the out of state applications, they receive about 2-3 thousand each year, interview about 300, and accept 30-40. Keep in mind that these numbers are based on rough stats in my head. The admission's office has stats that I can pick up tomorrow and verify that I was within an acceptable range. I hope this helped.

From the US News and World Report website (these numbers are from Fall 2007):

Total admissions data: 3,347 applied, 626 interviewed, 255 were accepted, 155 enrolled
In-state admissions data: 673 applied, 459 interviewed, 156 were accepted, 123 enrolled
Out-state admissions data: 2,674 applied, 167 interviewed, 99 were accepted, 32 enrolled

Keep in mind that starting Fall 2008 (M1s this year) the school interviewed significantly less people. So, while the number of applicants and matriculants is relatively the same, the number of applicants interviewed is much lower.

Thanks for the help WiscDoc. So you are saying there is a pretty good chance I get in if I get an interview (I am in state)? I have a question for you, how many people are in the small group part of the interview?

2 med students/2 interviewees in small group.

last year's #s were something like:

IS Interviews ~300
IS acceptances ~225-250

OOS interviews ~200
OOS acceptances ~70

from what we were told at the interview by Dr. Bertics who chairs admissions and Dean Wall.

I've heard that the UW also gives preference to students who went to the UW-Madison campus for undergraduate degree? True or not true?

I believe 50% of UW-Madison matriculants are UW-Madison undergrad students (which include is and oos).

Note this is for the matriculants. A UW-Madison undergrad accepted at UW-Madison med school is PROBABLY more likely to attend UW-Madison.

Its suprising to see how few out of state students UW interviews... is there anyway to know the stats of out of staters that were interviewed?

look at my MDapplicant profile.. i guess i was one of the lucky "few" OOS who got an interview invite..

I will throw this in here. How can I cheaply get to Madison from Columbus without a car? I do not want to pay 450$ for a trip to Wisconsin.

I'd check flight costs into Chicago O'Hare, it's around 2 1/2 hour drive from there to Madison; depending on how much you'd save, that may make sense. Check airfare into Milwaukee as well; it's definitely driveable to Madison & if you can save $100 + on air, I'd consider that, but flying into Chicago's likely your best bet.

Depending on how badly you want to save money, check flights from Cleveland to Chicago, those should be dirt cheap although a bit of a drive on both sides of the flight. I suggest you not fly into Chicago Midway as that's around 45 minutes south of Chicago O'Hare Airport.

Yes it is true. 46% of the M1s are UW Madison alum.

3.8/33 iirc.

rent a car and drive?

I am IS and my secondary was complete 8/4. I have a 30 MCAT and 3.5 GPA, 3 publications, posters, work full-time in research and part-time in the ER. Should I have heard anything about an interview by now? I applied last year and never received the email invite - I got a call in San Diego at the Neuroscience Annual Meeting the Monday before the date they had scheduled me for asking if I was going to be able to make it. My application has improved since then and I got my application in over a month earlier. Just getting a little anxious and wondering if I should call the Adcom for a status update since I never got the interview invite last time...

If you're selected for an interview there should be some notation on your status page regarding transcripts IIRC...

Hello all,

I am a fellow Wisconsinite and I was wondering if there are a lot of people at UW that attended other UW-system undergrads (Oshkosh, GB, Milwaukee, etc. etc.).

Thanks 🙂

there's a status page?

Crap. Why did I apply here again?! Can't remember for the life of me. Well, good luck to the people who have already heard from UW about interviewing!

This actually sounds more accurate than what I posted... I actually posted the percent that matriculated, NOT accepted (they accept a bit more, obviously).

Thanks for the correction drizzt

Yeah, I think 12% of my class attended school in WI undergrads other than UW. A good # of those were other UW system schools.

I just got an interview invite for 10/17!!! Anyone else interviewing on this day? I'm so excited!!!

For all of you wondering about UW System schools I go to UW-Milwaukee although I used to go to UW-Madison.

Did you get an email notifying you or did the invite only appear on the status page?

I got an email notifying me of the interview, nothing changed on my status page.

Congrats Marcy, maybe I will see you at the interview day/social. Did they require you to send in transcripts?

No where in the email did it request my transcripts and nothing on my status page changed. I hope I'm not missing anything, but I've checked multiple times.

Maybe they changed that policy from last year but they used to requre you send them in before interviewing.

Apparently, candidates who interview at UW do not have to submit official transcripts this year. I remember the note that drizzt is referring to on the status page - it's not there this year. Did I mention I didn't get in?

So M1's this year have a huge test on Thursday morning or something?

So M1's this year have a huge test on Thursday morning or something?

Block 1 exams are Wed, with one lone exam on Thurs. We have "integrating cases" Thurs and Friday. It's a new PBL concept, supposed to be cool.

Yes, I am planning on trying to anyways, depending on what time I can get out of my early afternoon classes so that I can get out of Milwaukee before rush hour.

I'm still debating, but currently leaning towards going - if anything just to talk with some of the current students and applicants, I guess.

It's worth going to, I enjoyed it. We chatted with the med students, and it also lets you to get to know a few of the fellow applicants.

Thanks for the info. So I take it you already went this cycle, then? Were the med students there mostly M1and M2, or were some of the older ones there as well?

There weren't any M1's.

On our night there were 2 M2's, and 1 M4. All very helpful. At the very end another M2 came, he was also very nice, and turned out to be my student interviewer the next day 🙂

I'm not sure if it's going to be the same students every social, but regardless, it's a very relaxed atmosphere and it doesn't hurt to go. As long as you can refrain yourself from excessive swearing and can follow common sense, it will be a good experience. They told us upfront that unless something extraordinary good or bad happened, nothing will be recorded.

I'm a UW alum and still living/working in Madison, WI but technically oos and just got rejected pre-interview. I feel betrayed by my own badger family. That's harsh bucky!

sorry 🙁 UW is pretty hard to get in for OOS, even though you are a badger. MCW would probably be much easier, but I think they have an overflow of applicants. I was complete there 8/4 and still not interview yet. It's been over 2 months.

If you're still living/working in Madison, how are you still OOS? Unless I guess if you're a recent alum and don't have the full year in yet for residency purposes...

I feel your pain - I was also complete there 8/4 and the only thing I've heard so far is the "favorable review, moved to smaller pool" update...

I'm intentionally keeping my instate status elsewhere because UW (though I love it dearly) is not my first choice. I also haven't been working for a full year yet.

There's usually more M1s, but we'd just finished exams so were doing other things... heh

Hello. I have a question for anyone who can answer. I was complete 9/18 and have still heard nothing back yet. Should I be worried??? I'm in state, 29Q mcat 4.0 non sci gpa, 3.9 science gpa. Strong ec's and volunteering. From what i've seen on other posts it looks like they send out interview invites only ~2 weeks before the interview date. But i'm still a little worried because many other schools have already gotten back to me. I'm thinking of calling to ask the status of my application. Should I do this? Should I be worried? UW is my number one choice. Thanks.

see my reply to this question in the other thread....

I was complete 8/4 and didn't have my interview until 10/17, and got an email invite the week before the interview.
