No one can tell you what your chances are. Your best bet is to check out the individual school’s average accepted statistics and compare it to yours, if you are close then give it your best shot, if not then maybe you should consider working on it. MD vs DO
Physicians are hired as tradesman for the job of physician or surgeon, the degree qualifies you for the job but isn’t the job itself. Having said that, there is no discrepancy in salary between and MD and a DO, however it is debatable whether DOs or MDs make more money when self employed. Are DO's considered "medical doctors"? Or are they just doctors?

Actually Doctor of Osteopathy is an outdated term, the original title was Diplomat of Osteopathy when A.T. Still, MD only taught his students OMM and Anatomy, which then evolved into Doctor of Osteopathy as more forms of treatment such as surgery were taught. Our official title is Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine now as we are trained in Pharmacology (yes Dr. Still eventually had to allow medicine be taught), Surgery, and all aspects of modern medicine. We are medical doctors. Things have changed since people expected to die when they called their doctor to bleed them dry or administer some poison, and as things change so does our profession. It’s in that ability to adapt and be dynamic that makes our profession so great. If modern medicine went down a road to harm patients again I am sure we would diverge once again.

What should I wear to an interview?

The consensus is that business formal is the way to go but ladies may have a harder time choosing what to wear (men just go with a suit and the hardest choice is choosing a tie color). Here are some opinions and ideas on that topic:

How do I/Should I shadow a DO?

A good place to start is in contacting your state Osteopathic Medicine Society either via the web or phone and asking for a local list of physicians. Another way is to check out your local hospital, if they have a website that is best. Many schools suggest that you shadow a DO before applying and it is a requirement for others. Yes, it can be done. However, it is both difficult and rare. The best time to evaluate which school you would like to attend is before you start; however, there are situations in which people are forced to move and things like that.

DO or Caribbean?

This is the topic of many heated discussions over the years. The threads usually look the same and many end up in flame wars which get closed, however here is one that sums up the opinions on the DO forum rather nicely. Remember, if you ask this question on the DO forum you will get a DO biased answer, if you ask if on the FMG forum you may get different answers. In the end, it is up to you to evaluate which better suits you, DO, MD, or FMG MD.

I repeated a course. Are the classes averaged, do they just take the highest grade, or do they just take the last grade?

You will put all courses in the AACOMAS application even repeats and multiple repeats. Applicants should list the original class(es) as a repeat i.e. “Repeat” and then list the final time it is taken as “Last Repeat”. You will only enter a grade for the last time you took the course and this will be used to calculate you grade. 0 credits are given to all repeated courses except for the final one. This allows your class to be calculated in the GPA once.

Some classes are "repeated" for additional course work and is not considered a repeat. Grades should be entered for all of these courses.

Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine does not participate in AACOMAS and they use TMDSAS.

TMDSAS complies with the uniform GPA calculation for graduate and professional schools. Grades from all courses are calculated (even if repeated, failed or withdrawn failing). Grades with a plus or minus will be calculated as the letter grade only - the plus or minus will not be used. Each grade is given a numeric value: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1 and F/FL=0.

I'm retaking a science course. The original class had the lab and lecture combined for one grade. Now I want to repeat this class at another school but the lab and lecture are 2 separate course. What can I do?

so far only 2 osteopathic schools require college math:

-UMDNJ-SOM requires applicants to complete 6 hours of math.
-UNTHSC/TCOM applicants must take 3 hours of calculus or statistics.

What is included from in my science GPA?

below is a cut and paste from the AACOMAS HELP tab found in the Academic Course Work portion of the application. I believe you will only see this tab after you enter at least one college in the application. Colleges Attended->Academic Course Work->Help:

The Science category would include all courses with subjects of Biology, Organic, Biochemistry, Other Science, Physics, and Inorganic Chemistry. Non-science would include courses with subjects of Math, English, Behavioral Sciences, and Non-science.

These subjects determine GPA computations for meeting college entrance requirements. Each subject will be verified and corrected if necessary.

offering of preceptorship or clinical training before 3rd year
board pass rate
distance of clerkships from med school (will you need to find housing...again!)
pre-doctoral fellowships and benefits
post-grad fellowships and residencies offered by the school
PBl vs lecture
on campus library and study locations - (size, computers available, group study rooms, etc.)
recreational facilities (gyms, pool, etc.)
Amount and duration of 4th year electives
research (clinical or lab)
location (weather, social life, urban/rural, safety, etc.)
match list
diversity of faculty/students
cost
availability of fellowships
technology (STAN, wireless, lectures on mp3 or video, etc.)
mission statement of school
exam schedule
grading (pass/fail or pass/fail/honors or letter grades)
clinical grading policy (weight of shelf and evaluations)
are students ranked (does school let you know ranking in percentiles or exact number)
standout faculty
stability of curriculum and amount of input students have in changing it

Opportunities for international medical missions
attrition rate and policies regarding remediation (ie, is it 3 strikes and you're out?)

I hear that OUCOM (Ohio's DO school) requires you to sign a contract to practice in Ohio for a few years. Is this true?

Yes, you are required to sign a contract with your secondary application that obligates you to return to the state of Ohio for 5 years and practice after completion of your residency (and fellowship if applicable). The contract can be found here, along with more interesting discussion on the matter. Check with the OUCOM Admissions office for the most up-to-date information.

What are the math requirements for DO schools?

So far, 5 osteopathic schools require college math:

Touro-CA requires a minimum of 4 semester hours of Math and/or Computer Science.

Touro-NV requires a minimum of 4 semester hours of Math and/or Computer Science.

Touro-NY requires a minimum of 4 semester hours of Math and/or Computer Science.

UMDNJ-SOM requires 6 hours of college level math. 3 of these hours may be satisfied by Computer Science or Statistics.

UNTHSC/TCOMrequires one semester course of math-based Calculus or Statistics (at least 3 hours). Pre-calculus is not acceptable towards this requirement. TCOM may consider statistics courses taught in other departments on an individual basis.

What other course requirements are there for DO schools?

It varies for each school. All course requirements can be found in the 2009 College Information Book.

Compiled based on my experiences.

5/29/09 Edit: Included osteopathic match information for DMU, LECOM, and PCOM based upon 2007, 2008, and 2009 match lists. I had to manually tabulate and summarize the data - reconfirm if you are very interested in the specifics. The schools presented in the powerpoint were programs within the PA region and/or programs were students from our undergrad college were currently attending.

British Columbia:
There are two pathways for D.O. registration in British Columbia. The first recognizes the COMLEX examinations and two years of AOA certified post-graduate training. The D.O. has a limited license, and is restricted to a practice of musculoskeletal medicine. This pathway is primarily intended for the D.O. that wishes to establish an OMT focused practice. The second pathway requires completion of the MCC examinations and two years of a ACGME residency program. The D.O. will then receive an unrestricted license.

Alberta:
The D.O. candidate is required to complete the MCC examinations, AOA certified residencies are recognized. There has been informal interest expressed in considering the COMLEX as an alternative to the MCC examinations.

Saskatchewan:
A board exists separate from the provincial College for the registration of D.O.’s, although it has not been active for many years. D.O.’s are registered by the board to practice “osteopathy”, although that is not clearly defined.

Manitoba:
As of 2002, American-trained D.O.’s are eligible for registration in Manitoba.

Ontario:
Since 2003, the College of Physicians and Surgeons have recognized the American DO degree as equivalent to that of an American MD. Additionally, the COMLEX examinations are recognized if performed after 2004 when the PE component was introduced with part II. The same criteria apply to the USMLE. ACGME accredited residencies are recognized although AOA accredited residencies are not. Additionally, there is a “Practice Assessment” pathway for applicants with at least five years of clinical practice experience.

Quebec:
American-trained D.O.’s have been eligible for registration in Quebec for approximately 30 years, although the requirement that the candidate pass a French language proficiency examination has had a negative impact. Additionally, the Candidate must complete one year of post-graduate training in the province, although this can be at the fellowship level. MCC certification and Royal college certification are not necessary. Unfortunately, the title protection that exists for M.D.’s does not exist for D.O.’s with the result that the title use is not restricted in that province.

New Brunswick:
D.O.’s are eligible for full registration in New Brunswick. One pathway extends reciprocity to a D.O. with Maine licensure.

Nova Scotia:
As of 2002, full registration for D.O.’s is extended in the same way as for an American trained M.D.

Prince Edward Island:
At the moment, PEI is the only Canadian province without a current or anticipated registration pathway for American-trained Osteopathic physicians.

Newfoundland:
As of 2002, the College has committed itself to seeing that the government establishes a registration pathway for American-trained D.O.’s, although it is anticipated that this may take a couple of years.

Territories (Yukon, Northwest, Nunavut):
In most instances, the Territories will grant registration to any physician that qualifies for licensure in any other province.

Armed Services:
American-trained D.O.’s are eligible for service with the Canadian Armed Services, including scholarship opportunities, recruitment bonuses.

If it has a Biology prefix it will count as a science. If it has a history or humanities prefix, I would say no.

It's important to assess the prefixes of your courses. Some outliers will fall into science coursework without a science prefix (e.g., Neuroscience taught through the Psychology dept. or something equivalent). If you have concerns about a specific class, get the course description and forward the question to AACOMAS directly. Or give it a sporting effort and label it a science on your application and they might not change it, but be warned, if you do and they change it, the fact that you mislabeled on course might cause them to review the rest of your courses more closely.
 
Read through the FAQs and what not, and I have question regarding the GPA calculations and the calculator. Should we use the calculator noting the grade replacements policy? Like if you are trying to see how you look in terms of DO?

I have a question that usually does not pop up in the FAQ's. I have been debating whether or not I should include links or contact information of the organizations that I have volunteered for in the description section of AACOMAS. However, that is hard to do as there is a limit on how much you can write. So, I was wondering whether anyone has experienced it before, where the admission committees ask you to provide proof/confirmation of your involvements, or ask you to bring contact info or more proof during interviews?

It depends on the school and the activity. Adcoms don't have the time to verify every activity for every applicant.

Would it be unwise to submit your application before AACOMAS receives your final transcript? My transcript should be in early to late next week, but I am wondering if it would make more sense to just submit now since earlier is better.

Regardless of whether you submit it before or after, verification will not begin until all transcripts are received by AACOMAS.

MD vs DO
Physicians are hired as tradesman for the job of physician or surgeon, the degree qualifies you for the job but isn’t the job itself. Having said that, there is no discrepancy in salary between and MD and a DO, however it is debatable whether DOs or MDs make more money when self employed. Are DO's considered "medical doctors"? Or are they just doctors?

Actually Doctor of Osteopathy is an outdated term, the original title was Diplomat of Osteopathy when A.T. Still, MD only taught his students OMM and Anatomy, which then evolved into Doctor of Osteopathy as more forms of treatment such as surgery were taught. Our official title is Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine now as we are trained in Pharmacology (yes Dr. Still eventually had to allow medicine be taught), Surgery, and all aspects of modern medicine. We are medical doctors. Things have changed since people expected to die when they called their doctor to bleed them dry or administer some poison, and as things change so does our profession. It’s in that ability to adapt and be dynamic that makes our profession so great. If modern medicine went down a road to harm patients again I am sure we would diverge once again.

How do I/Should I shadow a DO?

A good place to start is in contacting your state Osteopathic Medicine Society either via the web or phone and asking for a local list of physicians. Another way is to check out your local hospital, if they have a website that is best. Many schools suggest that you shadow a DO before applying and it is a requirement for others. Yes, it can be done. However, it is both difficult and rare. The best time to evaluate which school you would like to attend is before you start; however, there are situations in which people are forced to move and things like that.

DO or Caribbean?

This is the topic of many heated discussions over the years. The threads usually look the same and many end up in flame wars which get closed, however here is one that sums up the opinions on the DO forum rather nicely. Remember, if you ask this question on the DO forum you will get a DO biased answer, if you ask if on the FMG forum you may get different answers. In the end, it is up to you to evaluate which better suits you, DO, MD, or FMG MD.

I repeated a course. Are the classes averaged, do they just take the highest grade, or do they just take the last grade?

You will put all courses in the AACOMAS application even repeats and multiple repeats. Applicants should list the original class(es) as a repeat i.e. “Repeat” and then list the final time it is taken as “Last Repeat”. You will only enter a grade for the last time you took the course and this will be used to calculate you grade. 0 credits are given to all repeated courses except for the final one. This allows your class to be calculated in the GPA once.

Some classes are "repeated" for additional course work and is not considered a repeat. Grades should be entered for all of these courses.

Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine does not participate in AACOMAS and they use TMDSAS.

TMDSAS complies with the uniform GPA calculation for graduate and professional schools. Grades from all courses are calculated (even if repeated, failed or withdrawn failing). Grades with a plus or minus will be calculated as the letter grade only - the plus or minus will not be used. Each grade is given a numeric value: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1 and F/FL=0.

I'm retaking a science course. The original class had the lab and lecture combined for one grade. Now I want to repeat this class at another school but the lab and lecture are 2 separate course. What can I do?

what are the math requirements for DO schools? What other course requirements are there?

so far only 2 osteopathic schools require college math:

-UMDNJ-SOM requires applicants to complete 6 hours of math.
-UNTHSC/TCOM applicants must take 3 hours of calculus or statistics.

Hey everyone, just a quick question. All my transcripts are verified and I have submitted my payment for each school. The status for each school now is "Payment received, Materials Received, Verifying." How long does it take for the school to change from Verifying to Verified? Is this a second verification process on my transcripts? I was under the impression AACOMAS already did this when I first submitted my transcripts?
