"To It May Concern:
I am writing to bring to your attention a grievous mistake on your hospital's website: the inclusion of the initials "D.O." after certain physicians' names. As I am sure you know, your website is a very public reflection upon both your institution and the physicians whom work within it. What you may not know is that it is an indisputable fact that almost all osteopathic physicians seek to hide the initials "D.O." from the public at large to avoid causing confusion, spending inordinate amounts of time explaining what a D.O. is to their patients, and publicly declaring their, likely, substandard qualifications to have entered into the realm of medicine. I am absolutely sure that it is exceedingly rare for you to see osteopathic physicians with these letters embroidered on their lab coats or emblazoned on their ID cards. By very publicly placing these letters behind these physicians' names-instead of simply writing Dr. So-And-So- you have clearly demonstrated that you're willing to put this undue burden upon these employees. I would kindly ask you to please immediately alter the way you describe these physicians' credentials on your website. Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation.

Concerned Physician"

Multiple wiser-than-you premeds and medical students have declared this fact elsewhere on this website; usually related to statements of how changing the degree will cure all that ails the profession. What more proof do you need? Where's my dollar?

Wow.. how long did it take you to compile all those links??

Wow.. how long did it take you to compile all those links??

About two hours longer than many of the people who declare that they know exactly why and how changing the DO degree will fix everything and aver something to the effect of that contained in the OP have spent inside a medical school, on clinical rotations, doing residency, doing fellowship, or in practice 😉

And Jamers, presuming you're in DM, wouldn't

be a better avatar?😀

Oh man, I am so sorry, your hardcore facts have swayed me. Are you kidding me? That's like saying that because you heard someone on the subway say that the chocolate cheesecake diet helps you lose weight that it must be true. Wow, just go sit in the corner for awhile.

so J-Rad...you don't think it's beneficial that premies and med students can visit hospital websites and see that their future degree is known at a given hospital and that rotations and residency might actually be doable at a given location?

all the DOs and DO students I've met had no interest in hiding any letters.

so you're a DO fellow looking to change your letters, right?

Umm, I am always surprised at how satire is lost on some people 🙄

Please go back and read the original post and think it through. If you don't get it then, I'll be happy to explain why you and I are likely on the same side of the issue...

No. there are alot of links, from alot of different sites. Its like hearing 38 people from 38 different subways saying chocolate cheesecake diet helps you lose weight... It might not be true, but its definitely worth looking in to.... fatty

You're only a resident. What makes you think you know more than pre-meds who haven't set foot in a medical school yet?

You want me to sign a petition that says we should remove the letters because I am likely substandard?? Screw you, i'm better than you will ever be!

You're only a resident. What makes you think you know more than pre-meds who haven't set foot in a medical school yet?

Yeah, and you especially can't know more than first years like me. I mean, if you're a fellow that means you're a ways removed from med school. Think about how much medicine has changed since you graduated. I think you should keep your opinions and little petitions to yourself, at least until you redo medical school. Get with the program man!

In other news, I never knew that the University of Michigan had a college of Osteopathic Medicine!!! 😱

How about asking those sites to add a brief description detailing what DOs are - or perhaps place a link to some site containing more info about DOs?

Does anyone else find this thread hilarious for reasons having nothing to do with the original post or anything about osteopathic medicine besides I, J1515, ScaredE (after a prod), and maybe Metal? I swear I think a few people need to strapped to chair for a 48 hour marathon of The Simpsons and South Park while being whomped updise the cabeza with printouts of every page of every "The Onion". What is the osteopathic treatment for the satire/sarcasm bone being sidebent left-rotated right and ectopically located caudal to the coccyx and rostral to the perineum? :meanie:

Quality sarcasm is usually easy to identify.

If you'll look at these points, you'll see that degree change is but one of them.

1. Cranial Osteopathy must be repudiated as quackery.

2. OMT as a whole is an adjuct therapy in the model of PT. As such, it does not form the foundation of any unique school of medicine and its place in the curriculum should be reduced to reflect this reality.

3. Having five states which inappropriately limit the practice rights of dually qualified holders of the DO degree is nothing but a restraint of trade. It serves the purposes of the AOA at the expense of patients, states, and physicians. The licensure requirements of these states should be brought in line with the other 45.

4. Degree change to MD/DO to reflect #2 above.

6. No more for profit medical schools, reflecting LCME's position.

7. Growth and improvement of both clinical and graduate medical education.

As the saying goes: lead, follow, or get out of the way.

i thought the op was pretty hilarious...
personally, i don't know if i want people who can't pick up on blatant sarcasm/satire deciding how to change the degree that i applied for and am working my ass off for...
anecdotal, and coming from a first year, but i have yet to meet a single person who either didn't know what a DO was, or didn't get it after a 1-2 sentence explanation. i never realized that the profession was so marginalized and discriminated against as one might infer looking at these threads...

Quality sarcasm is usually easy to identify. Eye of the beholder.

If you'll look at these points, you'll see that degree change is but one of them.

1. Cranial Osteopathy must be repudiated as quackery. Here, Here, seconded and thirded. You know why? Because this modality, in adults at least, not only has no inter/intra-operator reproducibility/reliability but also because it has no plausible mechanism of action.

2. OMT as a whole is an adjuct therapy in the model of PT. As such, it does not form the foundation of any unique school of medicine and its place in the curriculum should be reduced to reflect this reality. Or create a standard that the place of OMT in the medical armamentarium is not overemphasized and is better integrated; some schools seem to do this better than others. I agree, it does not form the defining characteristic of "The Profession".

3. Having five states which inappropriately limit the practice rights of dually qualified holders of the DO degree is nothing but a restraint of trade. It serves the purposes of the AOA at the expense of patients, states, and physicians. The licensure requirements of these states should be brought in line with the other 45. Hazaaa, and three cheers.

4. Degree change to MD/DO to reflect #2 above. This is where you and Andextrous and I diverge in opinion. Changing the degree, in my opinion and experience, will do nothing. It is a cosmetic change-"Lipstick on a pig" anyone? I am very proud of the degree I earned and my concerns over the direction and future of the profession is in no way addressed by changing it. The original post was ultimately a counterpoint to the surprisingly common preconception that many to most DOs are somehow ashamed of their degree and desire to hide it and that they spend inordinate amounts of time trying to explain its meaning to patients (In four years of medical school. three of residency, and the beginnings of fellowship at an allopathic quarternary care center I can still count on less than one hand's fingers the times I've been asked about it) and that institutions seek to hid their DO employees' credentials. I thought it was interesting how frequent the degree designation IS used on the websites. And note, most of that list was derived from the recent "Best Hospitals" and "Best Children's Hospitals" lists in US News and Parents magazine respectively. So your points are somewhat tangential to the original conceit of the thread, but I'm willing to address them here. Just like cranial, you have presented no plausible mechanism of action for how changing the DO degree will address the true problems of the profession, though you and Andex seem to bluster about how it will (a logical analog to: "but I know I feel the CRI and my patients get better!").

6. No more for profit medical schools, reflecting LCME's position. Absolutely. And I'll raise you one: I'd suggest while others waste time tilting at the degree windmill we encourage the medical world at large to put a stop to this train. One powerful way to do this would be to encourage allopathic institutions to adopt the policy of no medical students from non-LCME accredited schools rotating through the hospitals if the osteopathic profession chooses to not rein in the idea of for-profits on US soil. The power of showcasing ones' self at a desired residency spot cannot be underestimated, especially for osteopathic students. This maneuver would be extreme, but would send a shiver down the osteopathic community from top to bottom and may be just the impetus for the AOA to actually employ the advocacy at their disposal (since they often talk of how they have no control over the COCA, but choose to not advocate for any changes to COCA). And the DO degree change does what to attain this goal?

7. Growth and improvement of both clinical and graduate medical education. Yup, and the DO degree change does what to attain this goal?

As the saying goes: lead, follow, or get out of the way. Tilt away young warrior, you can waste your time in any way you wish. You present some reasonable goals for the profession and a major campaign for a change that is unlikely to bring about those changes. I most certainly am not in your way. Tell you what, I'll keep my degree which has gotten me pretty damn far and I'll try to work on the real problems
.

Frankly, there is so much said on these boards that barely makes sense to begin with that I believe I could be forgiven for interpreting your "sarcasm" as an honest request. Get off your high horse.

:laugh:Finally someone came up with a good thread. I know what you are talking about, when I shadowed a couple D.O.'s before med school they both put black electrical tape over their initials and told me that if they didn't they would lose patients. They both told me that if we somehow got a degree name change that life might move on and they could possibly start to focus on being a physician. 👍

Umm, I am always surprised at how satire is lost on some people 🙄

Please go back and read the original post and think it through. If you don't get it then, I'll be happy to explain why you and I are likely on the same side of the issue...

ahhhhh, I apologize. I thought you were another one of those *****s making these stupid petition posts. Once I read the words "the majority" or "all doctors" I just stop reading. I think I may gotten your thread confused with another one.

Frankly, there is so much said on these boards that barely makes sense to begin with that I believe I could be forgiven for interpreting your "sarcasm" as an honest request. Get off your high horse.
I don't think it's me on the horse, Chief.

For future reference, sarcasm doesn't translate well through text. Honestly, I am surprised someone would go to such great lengths for a feeble joke.

Somebody better tell that to Jonathan Swift.
I think the real problem is that most SDN premeds are not quite as intelligent as they believe they are

If we keep deemphasizing the role of OMT in our medical curriculum(rightly so) ,

Why 'rightly so'? Did you learn any OMT yet? Which techniques do you feel should be eliminated from the curriculum and why?

This "feeble joke" is one hundred times more productive then sitting around wondering how we can change a degree that most of the people here don't even have yet. It is also more productive than spreading false notions about real physicians and how they "want the degree name" changed!👍

All those listings are top notch hospitals. I had a feeling it was a joke or trolling when I read "substandard qualifications to have entered into the realm of medicine"

Yup, see post #28 for the source of most, if not all. Funny how these top notch hospitals feel no need to hide nor prominently explain the DO degree.

What is the osteopathic treatment for the satire/sarcasm bone being sidebent left-rotated right and ectopically located caudal to the coccyx and rostral to the perineum? :meanie:
I believe you would implement the ischial spread but don't forget to ask them to cough.

I believe you would implement the ischial spread but don't forget to ask them to cough.

One of the most important questions facing the osteopathic profession: How many people fart when having this done to them? This was the very first manipulation we learned at UNECOM. Maybe this is the source of some DO student disgruntlement...

(Yeah, I know I asked the question in another thread.)

Multiple wiser-than-you premeds and medical students have declared this fact elsewhere on this website; usually related to statements of how changing the degree will cure all that ails the profession. What more proof do you need? Where's my dollar?

premeds and med students are not D.O. physicians... your logic seems to have quite a large gap..

Come on peeps, help Brother out...
"To It May Concern:
I am writing to bring to your attention a grievous mistake on your hospital’s website: the inclusion of the initials “D.O.” after certain physicians’ names. As I am sure you know, your website is a very public reflection upon both your institution and the physicians whom work within it. What you may not know is that it is an indisputable fact that almost all osteopathic physicians seek to hide the initials “D.O.” from the public at large to avoid causing confusion, spending inordinate amounts of time explaining what a D.O. is to their patients, and publicly declaring their, likely, substandard qualifications to have entered into the realm of medicine. I am absolutely sure that it is exceedingly rare for you to see osteopathic physicians with these letters embroidered on their lab coats or emblazoned on their ID cards. By very publicly placing these letters behind these physicians’ names-instead of simply writing Dr. So-And-So- you have clearly demonstrated that you’re willing to put this undue burden upon these employees. I would kindly ask you to please immediately alter the way you describe these physicians’ credentials on your website. Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation.
Humbly,
Concerned Physician"

:laugh::laugh: Finally a great rebuttal....

How am I supposed to take DOs seriously after watching this stuff?

You guys are LoL.

While I'm no proponent of cranial manipulation... (unless its through the use of lots of alcohol)... There is some theory behind the madness.

*CPM = 'cranial impulses per minute)*

"Normal" adult rates (8-14 per minute)
Woods 1961: 12.5 (10-14 cpm), n=62
Frymann 1971: 8-12.8 cpm
Kappler 1979: 11-14 cpm
Upledger 1979: 8-12 cpm
McCathy 1988: 10.4 cpm
NYCOM 1994: 7-12 cpm
McAdoo/Kuchera 1995: 8 (SD=1.4) cpm, n=128
Campbell 1996: 7.9 (5.5-10) cpm, n=15

-----------------
"Special population" CRI rates<8
Psychiatric (Woods 1961): 6.7 cpm, n=102 adults
A physical finding related to psychiatric disorders
JAOA 60:988-993, 1961
------------------
Comatose (Upledger/Karni 1983): 4.5 cpm, n=8
Examination of the cranial rhythm in long-standing coma and chronic neurologic cases
Craniosacral Therapy, Eastland Press (1983); pp 275-281
-----------------
Traumatic brain injury (Greenman 1995): 7.2 cpm, n=55
Cranial findings from craniosacral manipulation in patients with traumatic brain syndrome
JAOA 95(3):182-192
-----------------

But I understand where you're coming from. I'd be skeptical of anything that mennonite bastard told me.

Wow, are you guys really this ashamed of your degree? That's kinda sad. Yea, OP, let's manipulate the public so that you won't have to admit that you went to an osteopathic school...
