Greetings, I'm new to this forum but am applying to some DO schools. I was wondering if anyone knows which DO schools are the most popular among student applicants? Also, besides US News does anyone know any website or information on what the DO schools "ranking is". I know that MSUCOM, KCOM, and OSUCOM have received high ratings, but what about UHS, DMU, UNECOM, LECOM, and the others. Thanks.

I don't think there is an official "osteopathic school ranking" list. It seems to be more a matter of opinion than anything else. That being said, from what I've gathered in this forum, many believe NYCOM, PCOM, and CCOM are "the best." Why, I don't know (perhaps because they are old)--again I think it is just a matter of opinion. My suggestion is, don't worry about ranking. Visit the schools and attend the one that fits you best. That way, you can come back to SDN and tell us why YOUR school is the best.

Good luck...

I agree with the above post...it really doesn't matter what school you go too, just as long as you are content. Remember every school has something that is great about it and each school has something that sucks about it. Just go where you feel you fit in the most.

There is no way to rank the schools. What you will find when you talk to ANYBODY, (especially this site), is that they are incredibly biased, and will almost always say their school is #1. There is no way to rank DO schools, and even the MD "US NEWS" ranking is so absolutely subjective its useless...

Go to whatever school you want.

You will get the residency you want no matter what school you go to.

Q

This is an easy question to answer! KCOM is the best.

Simply stated....PCOM is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bet MSUCOM students could beat up PCOM and KCOM students..haha:laugh:

It's all about WUHS/COMP! We have the longest name!

I'd get into this argument but I don't have much time, I have to get ready to go to the BEACH!! Come on, man, how can anyone turn down medical school in Florida.

There is not even a debate AZCOM is the best and the hippest around!!!

As an objective unbiased statement, supported by facts, figures, journal citations, and rumors

It is the conclusion of the International Union of Pure and Applied Osteopathic Medicine (IUPAOM)

#1 - PCOM
#2 - 19 other DO schools

Why?

1. PCOM has a 110% first time COMLEX pass rate, and 100% pass rate for USMLE I (average score 260)
2. All their MS-IV students are placed in either neurology, dermatology, orthopedics, or ENT residencies (some against their will)
3. Elective Rotation at Star Fleet Medical (and have your attendings be holographic)
4. Dorm rooms are located at the Hilton, Sheraton, Adams Mark Hotel, etc.
5. Between lectures, a full service massage is available, complements of the Osteopathic Manipulation Department
6. PCOM employs the use of English Soccer Holligans to roam the country and "talk" to people who believe that their school is better than PCOM
7. All first year students are taught the words to "Anything you can do, I can do better" song
8. Mandatory 2 hour nap time in the afternoon
9. Parents of PCOM students can beat up parents of other school's parents
10. In lockerrooms, PCOM students need "meter sticks" for measurements, because the standard 1-ft ruler isn't long enough.

I cannot disprove any of group theory's facts. This being said, consider this. When its 30 below wind chill in philadelphia, us west coast schools (TUCOM, COMP, AZCOM) are wearing shorts and playing volleyball.

The way I see it, LECOM has to be the best out there. How can a place that gets 120+ inches of snow in the winter not be the best school out there. I mean come on, what else is there to do.

This same thread has been posted before and being a senior member of SDN.... I can tell you for certain that.... the best medical school is the school you will be attending.

Later,
😎

All of these *****s chiming in with "my school is the best!"
blah, blah, blah, blah!!!! What a load of garbage. As far as I am concerned, it really does not make a difference where you go to school to get your medical education. All schools have the same basic curriculum for the most part. All of the DO schools will teach you OMM and you will forget 90% of it after you finish the second year. Choose the school based on which location you like the best and you will do just fine. And don't listen to these complacent and arrogant ******s who all think their schools are the best.

-your most filthy liquid
😀

NSUCOM is the best because but a few minute car ride away are hot college/twenty something toned bodies in Miami topless and tan and rarin' to go.

On a side note, GOOD KNIGHT POPOY look how many posts you have.
Q

Everyone knows OSU is the best because........ ummm.......

.......

ummmmm.....

Well, OSU is in Tulsa, and Tulsa is...... ummm....

.......

...... ummmmmm ...........

What was the question again?

Simply stated....PCOM is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FYI - I was being a little sarcastic.

Of course I think PCOM is the best. I better.....it is the school that I will one day receive my DO from.

This same thread has been posted before and being a senior member of SDN.... I can tell you for certain that.... the best medical school is the school you will be attending.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

PCOM 2006   🙂 🙂

As for me I have to say that LECOM is the best....other than the snow and frigid cold and the frozen lake....it is the only school that offers pathways that fit your learning styles. Whether it is independent, problem based, or lecture/ discussion there is one that is right for you...that is if you go to LECOM

I guess the two best schools according to the one they attend, for me I can't decide between KCOM and UHS? I only thought I'd get into one school, but now I have a chance to choose? Anyone have any positive or negative things to say about the schools when you had to decide where you wanted to go? I have a gut feeling already, which I'd go to, but the tuition is a big difference?

Well guys, according to www.usnews.com, TCOM is rated as #41 in the nation in top medical schools. That's above all other osteopathic schools.....

I thought TCOM was ranked 39th (tied with Brown). Also, I thougt OSU and MSU were ranked above it. My references are from the Primary Care rankings. Is primary care the rankings list you are referring too? I'd be curious to know if you are referring to something different.

To clarify...

TCOM was ranked #39 in PRIMARY CARE....not in top medical schools overall. MSUCOM ranked #35 and the Texas Osteopathic school also ranked higher....all in primary care.

This is a good accomplishment for osteopathic medical schools, but we should not only emphasize primary care but also specialty medicine.
The AOA has done very little with respect to fellowships and specialty programs.

Wolverine,

You are going to get a good education no matter where you go, especially if you put forth the effort to really learn, not just pass tests.

The important thing is that you choose the school where you feel the biggest connection. In the long run, the tuition isn't going to make a huge difference if you're on student loans because you're going to be paying through your nose forever anyway. So pick the place where you'll be the happiest.

I chose UHS for several reasons. First and most importantly, I fell in love with the people when I interviewed here. Everyone, from the faculty to the students to the maintenance people, were extremely friendly and helpful. This really carries over as well into the overall learning experience. The instructors bend over backwards to make sure we are going to be successful.

Second, I wanted to be in a city. I like the nightlife, museums, restaurants, etc. when I get the chance to enjoy it.

Third, I really liked the idea of the "Genesis Curriculum." This is the systems-based approach that UHS uses...we take each major system and learn its associated disease processes, pharmacology, biochemistry, clinical presentation, pathology, etc. To me...it just makes sense. And that was reflected in our board pass rates...don't remember the number now, but it was something like 97%.

So, for me, UHS was my first choice. But again, you have to pick the place where you feel the most comfortable. You'll get a good education no matter where you are.

Hope this helps!
Tammy

ranking schmanking...go where you will feel most comfortable and most productive

UNEOSTEO:

Just so you know, TCOM is the "Texas osteopathic school": Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine=TCOM.

US News ranks med schools largely on research grants. This says nothing about the quality of education of the school. You might as well use that issue of U.S. news as toilet paper, because that is what it is worth.
