Hi Guys,

Do you guys know of any post bac programs that guarntee admission if you maintain a certain GPA in the program? By that I mean, into their own medical school or an affiliated one? 🙂

Has anyone here been through or is currently enrolled or graduating from one? Or know anyone in one?

*Anywhere in the US (preferbly Illinois or midwest)
*Either into a MD or DO school or even Dental
*Non minority/economically disadvantaged programs please
*one year programs preferred**

Thank you. All suggestions welcome.
Please reply. :xf:

I have already looked at the AAMC Post bac list and other threads w/ no luck.

If you browse through the MSAR, I believe it lists the requirements in terms of needing an MCAT or not.

I believe Temple medical school has such a program.

Drexel has the IMS program, I think if you get a B average you're guaranteed an interview to the program, not a guaranteed acceptance though

Michigan State CHM gets you 3/4 of those (it is for students from disadvantaged backgrounds)...the program is called "ABLE" and there's more information here: http://mdadmissions.msu.edu/main/able.htm

There is not a seperate application, you simply apply for the medical school and - "Students who show promise for medicine yet may lack the science background required to perform optimally in medical school are placed on hold by the CHM Committee on Admissions and referred to the ABLE Selection Committee. The ABLE Selection Committee then makes the final student selections for the ABLE Program."

Students coming from this program tend to do very well in the rest of their medical schooling...you actually take several medical school courses during the post-bac year (anatomy, neuro) so your courseload first year is lighter, allowing you to focus more attention on the courses you do have to take, and have more time for extracurriculars, family, or whatever your own needs are.

Anyways, just a suggestion to look into. 🙂

That seems like a great program but unfortuantely I dont qualify.

I think there are some that guarentee a certain percent of their class to go to a certain school, like bryn mawr to penn, i think, for example. Goucher might have some of those, not sure, i know like 99% of their class gets in somewhere. Does G'towns program guarentee a spot at G'town with certain grades?

These guarentee programs bother me, they tend to be very expensive ...

The GTown post bach does not offer any kind of acceptance (and personally, I wouldn't even recommend it as a plain old post bach...). Neither does the Gtown SMP. Also, you may want to look more into that Temple program... if it's the one I know of, then it's an SMP rather than a post bach. Best of luck.

Guaranteed acceptance? Wow. I've heard of guaranteed interviews but that's an interesting spin on things.

I've never heard of a post-bacc that guaranteed admission, and I seriously doubt that any exist. There can certainly be preference, and maybe guaranteed interviews if you have a decent GPA, but I am fairly confident that no program is going to guarantee you an acceptance.

I'm curious, are you undecided as to whether to become a doctor or a dentist?

they do exist, drexel has a program like this. If you maintain a 3.0 or above for 1 year you are guaranteed admission. Heres the catch with all these, you have to be disadvantage financially, or be black/mexican/native american. Which excludes most applicants who would be interested in these programs.

The linkage programs aren't a guarantee...

From gujudoc in that thread:

"In regards to the linkage with GWU, I know that the linkage programs to GWU mean that as long as you get a 3.5 GPA in postbac, you are autmatically accepted the next year to GWU School of Medicine in Washington D.C. I actually have a friend that is doing that next year."

From others:

"The linkages with Rochester, Brown and Dartmouth (at least through the Bryn Mawr program) do not require you to take MCAT at all. Other of the schools Drexel, Jefferson, Temple only require you to get a minimal MCAT score which I think was 9-9-9."

"For the Upenn programs, people in either the Postbac Prehealth program or the Special Sciences program can apply for linkage with RWJ if they have a 3.6 or higher in the program. Basically you apply in like april/may and they may choose to interview and/or accept you for admission that year, so you don't have the glide year. Penn also has linkage programs with Temple, Drexel, and Jeff for their Postbac Prehealth program, for these they'll actually tell you before you enter that you have provisional acceptance to med school as long as you succesfully finish the program and get some minimal MCAT score. But the Postbac Prehealth program is limited to people who have never taken premed requirements before."

"Some post bacs offer gauranteed admissions upon successful completion of the program.
Wake Forest, UCONN, and Meharry that I know of."

"I thought with linkages it was usually only the top percentage of the classes? I know with Bryn Mawr it is especially hard. I was looking at jefferson and temple since I'm from the philly area, but I am looking to see how good these "linkages" are before I start shelling out all this money (especially to UPENN)."

"I just wanted to point out that one year track students are nominated by UPENN for linkage before they receive any grades from UPENN thus it is based on your pre-postbac qualifications. You express an interest in linkage and UPenn nominates you to X university. The number of slots available changes from year to year. Once you are nominated and accepted by a school, different schools have different requirements of you. I believe that Drexel and Temple require you to finish UPENN w/ a 3.5 and X MCAT. U of Pitt is a 3.75 and 33 MCAT."

What about the GEMS program?

Thanks everyone for the great info you have all shared.

Thank you so much for all the info. You are all so nice.

That thread is from 2004, I'm sure most the programs stopped this type of linkage.

That's simply not true. I went to one of the postbac programs that has this linkage. What she is referring to is CONDITIONAL acceptance, and you have to interview first in order to get the conditional acceptance. How it works is that you interview, and they look at your academic record other than your GPA in the program and MCAT, and decide whether they want to give you conditional acceptance. Then you need to get a 3.5 in the program and at least 9 on each section of the MCAT. It's not a guaranteed acceptance because 1) you have to interview and 2) you have to meet the grade/MCAT requirements.

From others:

This is true but you still have to interview and have a certain GPA in the program.

Again, conditional acceptance after interview, and there are requirements for grades and MCAT.

This might be true, I dunno about these programs, but I would be surprised if it didn't include some sort of interview.

You have to interview for these linkages too. Also, the interviews are generally really late, and it's difficult to get everything in order and apply to other schools for the next cycle in time depending on the situation. April/May?

The only schools I've heard of that definitely give guaranteed acceptance pending grades are the Tulane ACP (that you have to be waitlisted by a med school to apply to) and the New York Postbac program that you have to be waitlisted at and invited to by a NYC school.

Interesting. By interview, you mean, at the medschool, not by the post-bacc program?

At the med school. Most people in our program (Scripps) did it between the end of summer classes and beginning of school (~early September) for George Washington. Pitt's linkage interview was WAY later... march or something. Also, a lot of people didn't end up linking to Pitt, like only 35% of the people that applied for the linkage linked.

All of the top 3 programs (Scripps, BM, Goucher) have had 100% acceptance rates over the last 5+ years, that said, past performance doesn't predict the future.

Why so pessimistic?

There is great information in this thread. Even if we assume there is no 100% guarantee, anything close to a guaranteed admission must be an excellent option. It's not so easy to get an interview, as you might know. I don't see the point of SMPs anymore, unless anyone can claim that almost all near-guaranteed admission postbaccs are only for URMs or the disadvantaged. I did not know that such programs even existed. The question is whether science major students who have completed all their pre-reqs in undergrad can still benefit from this program.
