My friend's mother recently had Moh's surgery, and my friend mentioned to the dermatologist that I can do dermpath. The dermatologist said they will be expanding, gave my friend his business card and said he wants me to contact him. Their dermatology business is a 8 person clinic, I don't know if they have a dermpath on site. What to expect from these guys?

this is a good question.

i have had a few offers over the years to read slides for dermatology groups. the first time i asked around the community to see what kind of pricing to expect to be able to negotiate and was shocked at the range.

anyway, the deals i have seen are usually either doing consults for the dermalogists who read their own slides without dermatopathology training (some people bill $150 per case for this service) OR doing the run of the regular biopsies + mohs controls etc getting paid 10 bucks per case or so. the latter scenario is just a podlab setup - please avoid you are kicking us all in the nuts doing that.

Thank you, this is EXACTLY what I want to avoid. No need to wear a jockstrap.

Anybody else who has had experience with talking directly to clinicians about these issues?

Really, you'd only be kicking the pathology group owners in the nuts. If the pay is equal, I don't see any difference between working for a "pod lab" and working for a pathology group as an employee (ie., not a partner). Sure, the extra profits are going to a non-pathologist, but I don't care as long as my bills get paid.
